Heh... sorry, Mal. Just getting clarification on a few things in an effort to keep Doc honest (yeah right, like that's even possible).
wicked_raygun
Hey, Guys. You've probably noticed by now the radio silence from Porter. He hasn't posted since the end of February. I PMed him on Wednesday and haven't gotten a response back. I think it's safe to say that he won't be back soon.
So, bottom line, it looks like we're short a player. So I'm curious about what you want to do.
Rather than do an open recruitment and invite the hordes, I figure we could request something specific. So what do you guys think the group needs?
I will say that I think it's important we go for some diversity. Meaning, I think we got enough Gunslingers. :-p
Thoughts?
Dr. Miguelito Loveless
I'd just like to apologize to everyone (you especially, Ray). Since I was the one who got Porter interested and suggested him, I feel some responsibility for this glitch.
I'm also hoping that Kpatrol88's alright and not being beaten down too badly by real life. I don't truly know him, but in the brief time we gamed together in our other scenario, he didn't strike me as someone who would wordlessly vanish by choice.
I think we got enough Gunslingers. :-p
You can never have too many gunslingers. :oP That said, diversity is good.
Beyond that I'm not going to comment lest I jinx things again. :o/

Oh that's a bummer, I was excited to play with him.
I actually would vote Cleric. I think having someone with faith / a proper moral core would be a great juxtaposition with some of us. I was really looking forward to getting into some of that with Ira. Depending on the background, an Inquisitor or Oracle would work, too. A Paladin's alignment would get in the way. But I think some divine casting would definitely be a big help for us.
Dr. Miguelito Loveless
I was really looking forward to getting into some of that with Ira.
I miss Ira. :o( Both the PC and the player. The way he would literally preach sermons rather than just hand-wave his incantations and invocations was stellar. Not to mention how the character was developing in general.

Agreed, he was seriously great. :(
Speaking of games, I'm aching to get into a Mummy's Mask game. If anyone ends up having something come up, give me a shout!
wicked_raygun
Yep, Ira was a lot of fun. It sucked to lose him.
Anyways, from everyone's posts so far the interest seems to be a divine caster of some sort. Either a druid or cleric. I'll wait to until we hear from Ben to make a decision.
I think I need to raise my DM-fu level before I tackle giving an Adventure Path. Maybe by the end of the year, I'll be ready for that. That being said, has anyone heard anything about Mummy's Mask?
Mallory Lewis

With how fantastic you've been running this one, which I believe is completely homebrewed(?) I have no doubt that you'd do a fantastic job running an AP.

I'm not sure it's gotten a lot of play yet since it's brand new, but I'm really excited for it. I've had two different characters in mind for a game like that for almost a year.
Leland Hopkins
APs are super easy to run, since most of the legwork has been done. I'm running 5 groups and I keep having to smack down the itch to run another.
As far as I've heard, the first adventure in the mummy's mask AP is solid, but who knows how the others will turn out. It's rare that an AP is rock solid all the way through.
Benjamin Alderly Dalton
Ira was pretty cool; it's a real pity his player had to drop out. I'd vote for a cleric or druid as well.
I agree that you'd rock at an AP, w_r. Homebrews are much more work, and this one is stellar.
I've been wanting to play an old desert druid covered in a swarm of different vermin, which are his AC, but I can't find rules for swarm companions like the one I envisage anywhere. Woe. That just leaves my idea for a camel-riding paladin of Justice for when anyone runs a game like that.
Mallory Lewis

I adore that idea, though it is definitely unlike rules presented anywhere. I'd love to write some up if you'd be interested.
wicked_raygun
Witches have a spell called Vomit Swarm which is probably my favorite spell to cast ever. You open your mouth and unleash a swarm of spiders that you can control. As you level the swarm becomes wasps then army ants. Ridiculously fun.
Rather than a druid, Ben, you could try a synthesist summoner. Mechanically it's pretty close to what you want. The rest could be handled with flavor or a custom evolution.
Alright, so divine caster it is. I'll put up a notice later when I get home from work. Someone already contacted me about playing a cleric, actually. I'll post a response to them as well.
My cell can only handle so much.
And I appreciate the vote of confidence, guys.
Mallory Lewis
That would be awesome! I'm not so good with the crunch side of things, so I'd really appreciate your take on it. :D
Sure! I love doing this kind of thing, and I'm pretty into the idea.

That's a neat idea, but the Synthesist Summoner is banned like, everywhere. It's hard enough getting regular Summoners into most games.

I had never considered a summoner to fill the role of a desert hermit... interesting. Apart from the problem with the Synthesist that Mal mentioned, though, it also seems a bit too much like Iron Man and not quite what I imagined - I was going for vermin hidden most of the time, but prepared to crawl out of his beard and rags when he needed them, and able to leave him to do AC kinds of things. But maybe a regular summoner... hmm... though as you say, it's hard to get them in anywhere.
In any case, I'd still love to see a take on a swarm companion, Mal. I think their main problem is that swarms do auto-damage and can't be individually targeted. Though the latter is part of their swarmy-ness, I guess.
Also: Vomit Swarm? Ewwww. *g*

Mallory Lewis
I already started so I'm totally doing it anyway. I like the feel of it better for the Druid than the Summoner anyway, though I can't really say why.

There are a few problems inherent to swarms to be overcome, but I like a challenge. :)

Hey, you kids mind doing me a favor and testing out this here map. I'm trying to learn how to use maps in Google Drive.
Dr. Miguelito Loveless
Looks good to me. Doc headed straight into the kitchen to make a pot of tea.
And I got to see Mal step up onto the porch. :o)
wicked_raygun
Achievement unlocked. Awesome.
Technically, this was the one hurdle I had left to surmount before I thought I could handle an AP online. This is good to know.
Anyways, this should make our time in the Big Drop a little bit more visually interesting. Not to mention be a lot easier to manage than a spreadsheet. Oy, making maps on that thing was a pain in the @$$.
Now I just need to start googling maps like crazy and we'll be in business. I already found a bunch for the Deadlands RPG that I'm going to loot and plunder.
Dr. Miguelito Loveless
If you need random badlands (e.g. for the trek portion), one of the local GMs found that random overhead Mars photos are an awesome resource. Having played via a few of them I have to say they make a good representation of harsh, brutalized lands.
If you'd like, I can tap him for his resources and/or some maps he collected; he's a nice guy and I doubt he'd mind sharing.
Additionally, I'm pretty competent with Photoshop if a building or feature needs to be dropped in here or there.
ZenFox42
Hello, all -
At the suggestion of Wicked Raygun, I'm posting this to introduce myself. I'm an old friend of "Dr. Loveless", and he told me that y'all are looking for another party member. I've been RPG'ing for more decades than I care to mention, both as player and GM, and I'm "relatively" new to PF. For reasons of my own, I'd like to try a Cleric, which seems to be what y'all want.
But, just to do something completely different, I'd like to try a non-combatant Cleric - sort of a "Shaolin", "do no harm" sort. S/he would never use any weapons, and all spells would be buffs or utility spells (and what I call "counter" spells, not to be confused with counterspells - Daylight to counter the bad guy's Darkness, or Gust of Wind to counter Fog Cloud, etc.). Along with the mess-o-healing from Channel Energy, of course. :)
I'm thinking Neutral-Neutral, so s/he wouldn't be constantly haranguing others about their actions - more of a "live and let live" attitude, but perhaps with an occasional reminder about reaping what you sow.
That's about as far as I've taken it so far (except that maybe s/he'll be a Half-Elf), I need to read up on the gameplay pages (which I won't be able to do for a couple more days), and see what I think about the scenario, etc.
What do you think? Would such a PC fit in, not fit in, etc.?
Cheers!
Mallory Lewis
You want some tea?
Oh yes with whiskey in it thank you.

Welcome aboard! I like the idea very much of a character. Someone who outright refuses to kill, or even harm, should be a great contrast to Ben and Mal, who shoot anything that movies, and will expect similar. That you outright would refuse to should give some great roleplay / tension.
Benjamin Alderly Dalton
Great map! Ben will be shootin' bottles off the log, so nobody run out willy nilly. ;) Seriously, great tool - how does it work? Do you just start a spreadsheet and then load pictures into it somehow? Must steal this idea...
Speaking of shooting at things whether they're moving or not, welcome aboard, ZenFox42! I agree with Mal, such a character would provide interesting roleplaying situations. Which of the Nameless were you planning on worshipping?

From my Google Drive I opened a "Drawing". On the drawing I imported the background first. Once that was centered, I imported the pictures of the PCs. I took them from your profiles and then saved them in a folder on my computer to repeat this process later. I then shrunk the profile pictures to the appropriate size.
After that I just set the drawing to be shared and then provided the link. It was shockingly easy to do. I kind of wish someone had just told me it was that painless.
Just out of curiosity, if I ran a Rise of the Runelords campaign, would anyone here be interested?
Dr. Miguelito Loveless
... tea?
Oh yes with whiskey in it thank you.
Doc strolls out onto the porch sipping a steaming cup of tea. "Alright, I'm done with the teapot, have at it." :oP
I'm an old friend of "Dr. Loveless"...
Ouch, bad move! Admitting you know Doc in any sense is like signing your own death warrant. Although when somebody finally snaps they're going to take Loveless out first, so if you're paying attention you might have a shot at saving your own skin. Unless they slit his throat while he's sleeping. Or poison him quietly.
Yeah, you'd best roll up a character who never sleeps. Probably wise to avoid deep meditation, too...
... maybe s/he'll be a Half-Elf...
Well, you'd be among your own kind. We have the caring but naive Jade Wen, and we have the... *cough*... we have Ben. :oP
If you go half-elf and you're considering The Lotus Empire as your homeland, be sure to read the campaign guide so you understand the ramifications. Nothing wrong with the combination; you'll just want to be aware for your backstory.
I need to read up on the gameplay pages...
I don't know if you're just planning to skim parts of it or read the whole thing but if the latter, two suggestions:
1) Take your time and enjoy it. There are some talented writers and roleplayers in this campaign (that's including those who have departed) and quite a few passages are, in my opinion, novel-worthy. Savor.
2) It'll be a bit awkward, but it'd be worth opening two browser sessions side-by-side, the Campaign tab in one and Discussion in the other, and reading them in synchronism. There's the occasional inside joke but, more importantly, you'll get a feel for what worked with the greatest impact, and what didn't. Plus there's been a fair bit of meta-discussion about the various character's personalities and thought processes, why they're doing what they're doing, and so on. It'll give you a much deeper insight into what's been going on.
Think of it as watching a DVD with the commentary track turned on. :o)
Just out of curiosity, if I ran a Rise of the Runelords campaign, would anyone here be interested?
ZF, that's not the one I'm supposed to avoid, is it?

That does sound easy. I'll have to try it. Thanks for the lowdown!

OH HELL YES. Although I feel I ought to disclose that I'm also running it, though we haven't gotten that far yet. I'm good at firewalling information, though.
wicked_raygun
Hmm, I'm kind of spoiled by this group I think. Is there another AP you guys would be interested in?
I ask because one of my games has slowed down to death. And I think I'd rather just DM something than beg and plead on the recruitment board.
Oh, and if Leland doesn't respond by tonight I'll DMPC him to move the story forward. The guy must be super busy.
Mallory Lewis
Hmm, I'm kind of spoiled by this group I think. Is there another AP you guys would be interested in?
I'm playing in: Curse of the Crimson Throne, Rise of the Runelords, Carrion Crown, and Wrath of the Righteous. Though not official Paizo, I'm also playing in a port of The Drow War, and I'm running a game of Throne of Night. The other 3ish are completely Homebrew.
I'd be up for playing in anything, really, though Kingmaker has never particularly appealed to me (Never could come up with a character concept that I liked for it). I also wouldn't mind chipping in to get some of the books if it meant keeping the group together, because I love playing with you guys.
Benjamin Alderly Dalton
I'm running Rise of the Runelords, as mentioned, and playing in Skull and Shackles, Wrath of the Righteous and Kingmaker (though I'd love to play a goblin freedom fighter in the last one - how about a whole band of nonhumans trying to create a nation? OK, I just love the character concept). I'd also be interested in Carrion Crown and any AP after that but Skull and Shackles, especially Carrion Crown itself and Reign of Winter and Mummy's Mask. Throne of Night sounds great, as does Zeitgeist and Santiago, for non-Paizo APs.
If you're considering modules too, I'm currently playing in The Price of Immortality. The Kaer Maga module sounds fun, though.
It would be awesome to play anything with you guys. You're the best group I've met since my homebrew group, and that's high praise, because they rock, too.
wicked_raygun
I think I would personally be most interested in Reign of Winter or Mummy's Mask.
Kingmaker I'm going to have to outright pass on. Every single time I try to read that AP I start to slip into a coma. And it's heartbreaking because the River Kingdoms is such a bad ass setting.
Maybe books 2 through 5 are better, but I cannot get that far.
Mallory Lewis
Kingmaker I'm going to have to outright pass on. Every single time I try to read that AP I start to slip into a coma. And it's heartbreaking because the River Kingdoms is such a bad ass setting.
That's basically how I felt playing it. I've tried like 3 times.
Reign of Winter and Mummy's Mask both absolutely work for me.
Dr. Miguelito Loveless
I've been advised that Jade Regent is off limits, and our local group's other GM is lighting off something AP-based so I should check with him as well. Otherwise, I'm wide open.
And I definitely second Ben's (and Tom Petty's) sentiment: "Oh my my, OH HELL YES!"
I have an orphaned Vitalist I'd dearly love to get back into play, if you'd be open to 3PP. The Dreamscarred psionics stuff is pretty solid; we've had several different classes locally across two games and they fit quite well with Pathfinder. Plus Ralf's clone-brother is running locally at L7, so I know he scales well, if a bit wimpy at L1 (but then what PC isn't...)
How would you feel about something like that?
Leland Hopkins
Not particularly busy, just didn't realize you were waiting on me. Apologies all around. Don't hesitate to poke me, if I'm holding things up.
I would be interested in joining another game run by you. Great DM's are hard to come by. Depending on what others want to play, I would be most interested in running a dwarf Zen Archer, or a Human admixture evoker, but I'm flexible.
The mummy's mask seems promising so far. Reign of winter sends you to fight in the Russian revolution, so I'm not overly keen on that.
Zeitgeist AP is pretty cool, from what I've played previously. It is super RP heavy and really does require someone at act as a secretary to keep tract of what's going on. Throne of night is neat, but suffers from the same problems that Kingmaker does. Way of the Wicked is fun too.
In full disclosure,
DMing:
Age of Worms x2
Savage Tide
Wrath of the Righteous
Shattered Star
Playing:
Wrath of the Righteous x2
Rise of the Runelords (worlds slowest game, almost 2 years, still on first book.)
Way of the Wicked
Carrion Crown (I think its dead though...)
wicked_raygun
So unless someone has an objection, it looks like Mummy's Mask it is.
That's an interesting one since it presupposes that the PCs know each other.
@Doc - As a rule I don't allow 3pp, sorry. I've just been so burned by it in the past that I'd rather not deal with it in a long running AP. If this were a one shot, I'd probably be ok with it.
Uh, let's see, general rules...
20 point buy, average starting wealth, 1 campaign trait from the Player's Guide and another 2 of your choice.
Races I suppose would be approved case by case.
Oh, no evil alignments. That never works.
I'll prep a doc when I get home.
Benjamin Alderly Dalton
Hmm. No 3pp takes out my swarm summoner, and presumably also Mal's take on the swarm druid. Dang.
How do you guys feel about a paladin in the party? God pending reading through the Player's Guide.
Edit: Also, how do you feel about 3.5 feats from WotC, wicked_raygun?
Mallory Lewis
Paladin works for me, Ben.
Hmm. No 3pp takes out my swarm summoner, and presumably also Mal's take on the swarm druid. Dang.
To be fair, my thing is a first draft and will likely need a lot of tweaks, so I can absolutely understand it not being included.
Oh, and yes on advanced class guide, with the proviso that it be redone when it finally released.
Oh man that opens up even more options. I have two (or three) very different characters in mind, so I might hold off deciding on who I want to play until some more people decide, and narrow it down by role.
Leland Hopkins
Palladin's are AOK in my book. I highly recommend the fey foundling feat.
If no one is opposed, I'm going to go with a zen archer monk. I'll pick up the trap finder trait, and do double duty as the sneak.
Any upper or lower starting stat caps?
Dr. Miguelito Loveless
As a rule I don't allow 3pp, sorry. I've just been so burned by it in the past that I'd rather not deal with it in a long running AP.
Well that's disappointing of course, but understandable. And, bottom line: Your game, your rules!
Outside of getting Ralf back in play, I don't have anything specific I've been yearning to run, so I'll have to give it some thought.
As to race, I liked the brief taste I got of Kwin and wouldn't mind exploring his personality more (as a legal class, of course). Do you have any issues with kitsune?
EDIT/ADDED: If we're for sure going with Mummy's Mask, the free Player's Guide may be helpful for selecting feats and such (plus there are campaign traits, etc).
