As said earlier I would like to try weapon skills out with you guys. This would be a more organic and realistic approach with how weapons and combat is viewed but we've already taken the first step with DR armor. As said earlier this would eliminate BAB and you would receive a number of combat skill points based on your BAB. 1/2 getting 2 per level, 3/4 getting 4, and full getting 6, with the exception of fighters receiving 8.
The weapon proficiencies would declare the weapons as eligible for class skills. Weapon Focus would be replaced by skill focus. The skills themselves would be:
Axes
Heavy Blades
Finesse Blades
Small Blades
Bows
Shields
Crossbows
Flails
Hammers
Clubs
Unarmed
Thrown
Natural
(Exotic Weapon)
Polearms
Spears
We would also need to include some others for spellcasting:
Casting (Touch)
Casting (Ray)
Casting (Other?)
Derived statistics would be calculated using the skill rank in place of the BAB and every weapon would have its own stat. This means more book keeping but ultimately more realistic and I think more rewarding.
One last thing to note. I believe another skill would be important too. This would (for lack of better term) be a Dodge skill. Since we are eliminating most AC. This would be another active skill in combat which would result in another rolled skill for you action and a fluctuating AC but presents more realism for these combats. Anything with a Deflection or Sacred bonus would affect the Dodge Skill so when ever you roll a combat action it would look something like...
Dodge1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
Attack1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Damage1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
How does this sound?
| waiph |
cool.
What skill is for combat maneuvers?
With the DR setup as i understand it, AC from armor is cut about in half, so it's not THAT big a hit especially for lighter armors.
How do we calculate the bonus to the dodge roll? The system in place has that sort of mechanic but its assumed to just be taking a 10.

you would use your skill for that weapon adding in any subsequent feats or circumstance bonuses. So if someone is trying to disarm your rapier your would use your skill in light blades.
if this skill as it is set up armor is strait DR/-, splitting it up would just get confusing.
Dodge would be a dex based skill and would have combat skill points used to calculate it farther and increase your AC.
without the relevent armor proficiency feat the weapon would be considered an untrained skill and improvised incurring a -4 penalty to the skill.
Guns would also be a skill.

Is ranged touch and touch the same weapon skill, or are they different? Is dodge a weapon skill or regular skill? What other casting attacks are there?? I'm guessing anything requiring an attack roll, can anyone else think of any that's not a touch, ranged touch or ray?? Just wondering so I don't hurt myself.
When I get the ability to respec at level 7, will weapon skills be able to be respecd as well?

imimrtl-since your struck with the tony stark/bruce wayne syndrome you can choose for your occupation between the academic one listed previously or Dilettante which would give you a +1 to one skill of the following bluff, sense motive, knowledge (local), ride or linguistics. This would be a class skill, 1 more merit point for purposes of your reputation, and 600 gp

So, anything but regular armor adds to doge, right? Including mage/inertial armor?? I put a point in ranged touch and a point in dodge for level 1.
So my size bonus+dex+inertial armor+1 (weapon proficiency) is my total for doge - being a +9 total?
For my ranged touch I add +1+dex for 4 total.
Do these look correct?

As far as weapons, and dodge, Where do i get the points to put in Dodge, and how big a bonus does Skill Focus as a weapon skill go?
Weapons
-Finesse Blades
-Shields
-(Exotic Weapon) Whip
-Casting (Touch)
I have two more points to add.
How many points can I put into dodge?
--and are those one of my weapon skill points
and can i put points into CMB?
--and does that affect both CMB and CMD?
What is the bonus for my whip focus feat? Is it a +1 like weapon training, or +3 like Skill Focus?

Apologies to everyone. My laptop is on the fritz, so I wont' be able to post every day. Trying now, for every other day. It will mean more to read, and there will be exceptions where I can post every day. But having to borrow someone else's computer makes it more difficult. :P

Dotting for interest. I'll probably be creating a character in the 1-6 weeks depending on demands from other games I'm playing or when my current game with DaWay comes to a close.
Now there has been a lot to go over for character creation so I've taken the liberty of consolidating all the obvious or particular information for everybody's benefit! Mind you it's just what I've gathered as a 3rd party so at best this will be a starting point.
DaWay - I'll email the raw/formatted page to you and you can put it up on the on the campaign info page after cleaning it up and modding it to your specifications. Or you can delete it or whatever, that's your prerogative.
Character Creation:
All "0" level races are allowed.
15 pt buy
Absolutely no CE or NE characters
2 traits (for now)
Wealth is rolled
Gestalt allowed at double XP

The weapon proficiencies would declare the weapons as eligible for class skills. Weapon Focus would be replaced by skill focus. BAB related feats would just require that amount of skill points in the chosen weapon. The skills themselves would be:
Axes
Blades, finesse
Blades, heavy
Blades, small
Bows
Clubs
Crossbows
Exotic Weapon
Flails
Guns
Hammers
Natural
Polearms
Shields
Spears
Thrown
Unarmed
CMB & CMD
We would also need to include some others for spellcasting:
Casting (Touch)
Casting (Ray)

Dodge skill - Since we are eliminating most AC. This would be another active skill in combat which would result in another rolled skill for you action and a fluctuating AC but presents more realism for these combats. Anything with a Deflection or Sacred bonus would affect the Dodge Skill. ACP also applies to your total dodge skill bonus.
*Clerics automatically get 1 point in their deities favored weapon per level*
You take the armor, say Chainmail (usually a +5 to AC) Divide by 2 and round down to get the DR, and subtract that from the AC bonus to get the new bonus. Chainmale has AC+3, DR/-2
Then you have a secondary AC value that represents a strike accurate to get past the DR, which is the original value +the DR amount.
DR overlaps, as opposed to stacking unless it is of the same type so if you penetrate DR/magic for example, but the creature has DR bludgeoning, you are still subject to the bludgeoning DR unless you hit it with that sort fo damage. So you go through and apply the highest DR, and see if you get through it. If not, it doesn't matter if you get by the lower ones, you've already been subject to a higher DR. if you do pass it, you get to deal with the next highest DR... hope that wasnt too convoluted...
my idea for a variant health system is to make it a little more gritty and show characters struggling with wounds. I have never liked the "I got 2 hp, I'm good to go mentality" So my idea is as follows.
characters would receive there con SCORE plus hit die to start.
these would be divided into 5 categories which would represent different health "levels" essentially they would be a 0, -1, -2, -4, and -8 level. These would affect what you wanted to do in combat such as attacking, skill points, and concetration checks. The levels representing pain and fatigue. They hp would be divided equally into each category and after the first level you would roll for hp normally and then divide that into the categories.
For example. Fighter with 13 con would have 23 points to start. that would 5 points in 0, 5 in -1, 5 in -2, 4 in -4, and 4 in -8. When he levels he rolls 1d10 +1 for his level and then starts placing those points in each level.
I know this is complicated but it has worked decently in the past to convey the danger is very real feeling. Questions? Thoughts? Concerns?
They "levels" have names for some of them like 0 is "fine", -1 is "Bruised", "?" for -2, -4 "Hurt", -8 "Mauled"

No problem. I put it together so I knew how to draw a character for this game and figured it could be used for everyone's benefit if needed. The Armor as DR and Variant Health are the only pieces I'm worried about. I'm not quite sure what was settled on so I just put up what I'm guessing is right.
Just a few things I have questions on:
Ranks in Unarmed skill and Imp. Unarmed Strike feat. What is the relation between the two? Maybe ranks let you throw a punch for nonlethal damage without provoking an AoO and the feat gives you the option to make it lethal?
Are CMB and CMD one skill or 2? Also how does CMD work with the Dodge skill?
Does Skill focus (Weapon XYZ) give a +1 or a +3? Pretty sure I know the answer but I just want to be sure.
Variant Health and Toughness feat and Favored class bonus to HP.
That's all for now. I have about 75% of a sheet and a rough concept down. Just waiting on few things to either come together or fall apart. Good luck, everybody!

I have returned, after facing the nightmare known as Real World Logistics... =( Lets just say I don't really want to talk about that, but I am interested in knowing where we are and if we want me back in there?
And if you do, if anyone would mind pausing a moment so we can re-evaluate our character strengths and weaknesses and determine the best roles for them. Saliger, although a student, has better knowledge rolls than I do, but if I max out diplomacy and/or performance (oratory), I might be the Voice of the group. :P
