With practiced ease, Miss Cardue opens the lock on the drawer. In most of the drawers are letters and documents that seem typical for a politician. However one stands apart from the others: inside is a thin booklet written in a bizarre script that no one recognizes.

George Van Winkle
George says, "I have known the president for fifteen years and was with him in Cuba at the battle of San Juan Hill. He is a great man and a personal friend. However, I am responding to facts. 1) Unknown alien creature inhabits body of Senator. 2) We know absolutely nothing about this creature's anatomy except lightning kills it."
Thakur Sahib Harisimhji Jaisimh
"I agree that we need proper equipment to examine this creature, and that we should warn the authorities. I will be contacting the Foreign Office as soon as I can to inform them of this development. If it has happened here in the colonies, then by god they will try to infiltrate the most powerful empire on this planet. I have to let my superiors know what has happened. I would also like to take part in any further investigation of this phenomenon, in the name of His Royal Highness, King Edward VII."
George Van Winkle
George says, "Eddie has no authority here. The easiest might be to make a run to the Consular authority on 3rd Avenue. India is a colony of Great Britain, the United States of America is not. We have beaten Britain twice to prove the point. India should set itself free from Britain anyway. How can you be such a proponent of a government that treats you as third class citizens?"
He then pats Jaisimh on the shoulder and says, "Guests, should be respectful of their hosts." He then chuckles and says, "But it seems Wilhelm is about to take that claim from your slavemaster, my friend."
It is all a bit silly for an Indian to refer to the US as a colony of GB over 130 years afterwards. At the time, it would maybe have been said in Britain but not in upstate New York amongst mixed company.
Victor Hoadley
If we're going to talk to the authorities, we'll have to either go out or fix the radio. Both seem unlikely now, eh? I'll go look over there.
Victor goes and grabs the book from inside the drawer.
If Miss Cardue has the book, Victor asks politely.
GM RDNinja
As Victor asks the question, you all hear a heavy pounding on the front door downstairs. Worthington, who had remained downstairs with the elder Trufant to comfort the shaken maid and regain their own composure, hurries back up to the main floor and to the door, judging by his quick footsteps on the marble floor.
You hear the creak of the front door, and the fury of the storm pouring in, followed by muffled voices. After a brief indecipherable exchange, an abrupt gunshot echoes in the hall, and a heavy weight thumps against the floor.
Detective: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 5) + 6 = 15
You recognize two separate voices speaking with Worthington.
So we're in initiative now, except there's no real initiative order. You've got 5 seconds per round, and can either move or take a miscellaneous action, and then attack. Once everyone's turns are declared, they'll resolve simultaneously.
The study where you are is about 15 feet from where the hallway opens up to look over the foyer. The foyer looks more or less like this.
Morroway
This guy's got digs. Well, *had* digs.
Morroway frowns at the door and slides two shells in the open chambers of his shotgun. He snaps it closed and holds it at a low ready position, watching and listening. "Everyone get down." He says in a low voice.
Morroway
Yes. I said I had it draped over my arm with the chambers open & empty. If you think that's too odd, I can just draw my handgun. I had just imagined him standing in front of the fire (up to the introductory power outage), holding his shotgun and talking about this and other hunts. Never had cause to set it down per se.
David Trufant III
|
David hears the gunshot and cannot help but be startled out of his deep thoughts.
I hope father..., he thinks to himself briefly. He listens to the advice of the others, seemingly more equipped than he with deadly weaponry. He takes cover behind the doorframe opposite of Mr. Winkle. He listens in an attempt to gauge if anyone tries to come up the stairs.
Morroway
"Someone's coming. Hide!" Morroway hisses, looking for some kind of cover.
If I can, I'll hide behind something sturdy that I can still shoot from behind. I'm not totally sure what room we're in right now though, or what route/how far to the bedrooms with our stuff & guns.
GM RDNinja
Rooms: 6d2 ⇒ (2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 2) = 10
Victor and Evelyn's rooms are farther down this hall. Everybody else's is across the foyer. You're all clustered around the door of the study upstairs.

Haven't heard from Evelyn, so I'll assume she's taking cover in the study.
Van Winkle leans out of the doorway with his pistol, while Trufant waits just inside. The others hide behind the sturdy desk, except for Harry, who makes a mad dash for the far hallway.
As he crosses the open foyer, a man in rain-drenched clothes reaches the top of the stairs. He looks surprised by the quick Indian, and raises his rifle to take a shot.
Detective: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 1) + 6 = 10
Next round. Van Winkle has a shot at the assailant. Harry is still in the hallway, but can easily get into one of the bedrooms this turn.

David Trufant III
|
David, has heard gun shots before living in the Bronx, but this all seems so surreal. He looks around, and decides that it was either now or never. He rushes from the supposed safety of the door frame and rushes forth to aid those fighting against the well armed assailants. He risks his own body.
If I am gonna go down, I am not gonna go down without a fight
David, tries to reach with rifle-toting man, and use his martial arts training to take the man down.
What I am/was hoping for is to use martial arts to "disarm" him of his rifle? Is that even possible, if not I will revise my action.
martial arts: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 6) + 6 = 15
GM RDNinja
Brawling: 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (1, 6) + 8 = 15
Marksman: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 1) + 6 = 12
Victor effect: 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (1, 3) + 8 = 12
Van Winkle effect: 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (4, 6) + 8 = 18
Van Winkle effect: 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (1, 5) + 8 = 14
As the man levels his rifle to take a shot at Harry, he notices a crowd of people bursting from a room behind him. He whips the rifle around and takes a shot at Trufant, but the bullet whizzes right by his head. Trufant meets the man hand-to-hand, but fails to dislodge the rifle from his hand. As they struggle, a trio of bullets rip past Trufant and strike the assailant, dropping him unconscious to the ground.
Well, that was brutal. Next round!

Van Winkle: Listening

Miss Evelyn Cardue
Evelyn, now safely in the corridor next to her room, opens the door and steps inside.
Moving to her clothes chest next to the dresser, she quickly pulls it open and, unlatching a hidden catch pulls some fabric away to reveal a small pistol which she grabs, along with a box of bullets. Carefully she replaces the fabric and loads the gun before moving back to the door listening at it before edging it open a crack.
not sure how long all that will take,... let me know when its all done.
GM RDNinja
Oops, I forgot Harry said he was out for a bit. Moving on, then.
Evelyn has taken shelter in her room, while Van Winkle and Morroway listen for signs of the other set of footsteps. Unfortunately, after the gunfire, their hearing is diminished, and they pick up no trace.
Trufant and Victor search the body quickly, and besides the rifle, find a fine-looking pocket watch... and a sheriff's badge.
Next round!
