Beseth was content to let Hadran do the talking, instead focusing on reading the reactions of the community.

The villagers seemed rather unfriendly at the moment - at least partially out of fear when strangers were involved. You'd probably have to get on their good side if you wanted to get more information from them, but a few of them were willing to share a bit of information.

The attacks on the village began shortly after a villager named Gerlach started exploring the island of Nal-Kashel. He never said what he witnessed, but all agree he should not have trespassed. Dangerous creatures lurked in the ancient ruins there, according to the villagers, and old secrets better left alone. Gerlach visited the island frequently, and the villagers don’t want anyone “stirring things up” like he did. Some fear Gerlach has died, and others curse his name for upsetting whatever dwells on the island.

Hadran thanks the people willing to talk. Then speaks out.

"I know you have experienced trauma recently, but if something has been disturbed at this island it will come again. Allow us to investigate perhaps even bring back Gerlach. We will put an end to what ever abominations stir there. You have no reason to trust us. We are only here at the request of an old man."

"We'll probably have to look into the ruins, if they are the cause of what is happening, the key to stopping whatever is going on will likely be there." Beseth said agreeing, though she knew that the villagers probably wouldn't want more people going to the place which had likely caused these events.

The crowd's reaction to the idea of exploring the ruins was... not particularly positive.

"We don't need strangers making things worse." a middle-aged woman said, protectively wrapping her arms around two small children. "We don't even know you, much less trust you."

That works. XD

At your words, the crowd finally started to relax a little - you seemed to be swaying hearts and minds, and a few of them stepped forward as the worried muttering died down. They started to open up a little more, too.

No one has seen Gerlach since the attacks started weeks ago, when he disappeared from his cottage. The villagers report he blamed the wedding rock on Nal-Kashel for a “sickness,” but they explain that going to the rock is simply an old tradition for newlyweds. Children conceived on this honeymoon night are blessed by the sea, but they must eventually return to the waves to repay the gift.

As for Gerlach himself, he's a gillman born with the sea’s gifts, and is a talented sorcerer and alchemist known for concocting brews to aid his fellow fishermen (his old lab still stands). His discoveries on Nal-Kashel might have driven him mad, and he claimed to be “setting things right with his people.” The villagers claim the island ruins are an old Azlanti city full of dark magic.

They also claim that the island of Nal-Kashel was once an Azlanti outpost, and the villagers claim to be descended from the island’s original inhabitants, blessed with pure Azlanti heritage. Many villagers are gillmen like Gerlach and live below the waves, but they were the first to disappear when the attacks began, fleeing into deeper waters. Several claim to have seen relatives watching from the sea during the recent attacks and fear Gerlach is manipulating his people.

After that it would be best to stay fortified up here until our return. It should take no more then a few hours to a day. What do you say Beseth? Are you ready for another boat ride?"

He then leans in and whispers.

"I really look forward to the day that I can fly again."

Rain pounds the lighthouse as lightning flashes, illuminating the murmuring villagers as they seem to agree with the idea of remaining where it's safe. A shocked cry rings out a moment later, and the assembly gazes nervously toward the stairwell leading down. There, seawater creeps steadily upward, approaching the stain that marks the highest tides and flooding the entire lower story.

"Quick, was there anyone down there?" Beseth asks in a demanding tone to the people in the lighthouse. "We need to get everyone out of here and to the temple, if that water rises any more we could risk this entire building being overtaken."

A few screams broke out as the water began rising, and the crowd of people abruptly became an actual crowd of figures jostling back and forth, trying to get away from the rising water. You could see the waves cresting high outside, but only had a moment to consider it before the entire lighthouse shook-

Beseth does her best to assist the villagers off the ground, they couldn't stay on this floor that much was certain. "We need to get to higher ground, everyone up."

The crowd calmed for just a moment, as the water rose up to the fifteen-foot mark and stopped... just a moment before the windows above shattered and two massive tendrils entered the building, one each from the east and west windows. A third rose up from the opening to the floor below, and the crowd promptly went insane again. You were going to need to be VERY convincing if you were to have any hope of controlling them at this point.

Tentacles: 3d20 ⇒ (11, 12, 7) = 30

Without hesitating, the tendrils reached down to grab three of the villagers. It wasn't immediately obvious what they planned to do with the people, but... it probably wasn't going to be anything good.

Should you care to, there are multiple ways to try and free villagers. Attacking tendrils, making grapple checks (you get a +2 bonus from the villagers' struggles), getting creative...

Hadran's attack was a solid blow, and managed to completely sever the tentacle he struck. The villager within was let free, as was the one held by the tentacle Beseth attacked. There was no sign that it was an evil outsider, but the blast had been strong (and accurate) enough regardless. Midfoviing pounced on the third-

The first strike was enough, Hadran, so you can keep the use of MP if you want to.

Hadran attempts to sever another of the tentacles seeing the scene at the shore he rushes down to aid Midfoviing.

Continue to move to the source.

Taking a beating, Beseth decides to heal herself before attempting to break free.

Hadran, your strike is not accurate enough to sever the tendril. Would you like to Surge that, or leave it as-is?

Leave as is. This swing is way wider then the others and a 22 missed before so doesn't look promising for that one.

Things were... not going as well as they could have been. Hadran's presence outside seemed to be serving as a mild distraction, and the villagers inside actually seemed to be out of immediate danger given how all three of the active tendrils, but the stubborn squid had yet to give up.

At hadran: 1d20 ⇒ 7

It was also failing to grab onto Hadran, despite a valiant effort, and was limited to its ongoing assault on Beseth (who was having a lot of trouble freeing herself).

Constrict Damage (Beseth): 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

Hadran cuts at the tentacle again and continues to move toward the beach hoping to take this thing out at the source.

Véurr-móðr: 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 7 - 2 + 2 = 251d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 2 = 10 Finally higher then 10.

Her muscles almost ready to give, Beseth quits struggling and smashes her shield into the tentacle, hopefully with enough force to disable it.

Rage ends next round. Beseth will then be fatigued for 1 minute, or 10 rounds.

The creature outside let out a scream loud enough to rock the foundations of the lighthouse as the two tendrils were severed, and a few villagers still caught were dropped onto the beach. The aquatic monster sunk deep beneath the waves, and as it did so, the storm began to clear. In just a few minutes, the wind and rain had abated, leaving the villagers stunned and the lighthouse badly damaged. For all that, though, it seemed you had survived.

Did I get enough of a look to make a k. check to see what it may have been?

"Midfoviing..." Hadran calls out. "Are you alright?"

He finishes making his way down to the beach.

"Now that was a sea monster. Come help me round up the injured and get them up to the temple. We need to check on Beseth as well. I left her grasped in a tentacle, but I didn't see her dragged away as the creature retreated."

Hadran takes time to find any surviving villagers outside here with Midfoviing before heading back and helping everyone move up to the temple.

Her breathing heavy and her muscles aching, Beseth was glad that she had finally gotten the tendril around her to release her as she dropped to her knees to gather her breathe, her rage lapsing.

"Is everyone....alright?" Beseth does her best to ask as she pulls herself up, her fatigue not yet subsided. It was a stupid question of course, Beseth knew that some of the villagers had been taken into the sea by that monster, and perhaps people realized now that the lighthouse was not the safest place of harbor.

Yeah I fall out of rage and perform as well so a bit winded for a few moments :)

Unfortunately, most of it was underwater. Definitely some kind of tentacled creature, though, likely a giant squid of some kind.

"Midfoviing... is fine." the girl said, panting a bit. She looked battered and bruised, but she'd ripped apart quite a few tentacles, and their remnants dotted the beach. She looked exhausted, though - she'd probably flown into a rage at some point, and was now paying the price.

As for the villagers, they seemed... less than alright, really. Several of them had been stolen away, many more were injured, but they did seem somewhat grateful (and more friendly) after your efforts on their behalf. You might be able to get more information out of them now.
