Okawe's blow is mighty, but does not slay the evil office furniture! Chips and shards now litter the floor, but it is obvious the oak chair is not done yet...

Although the rapier has little effect, it may provide enough distraction for the others to land a solid blow so he strikes again.

The chair again tries to slam in to Okawe.
To Hit: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
and at long last succeeds in landing a blow against the mighty warrior, and causes the man to wince a bit as the chair deals Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 points of damage.

Everyone else is now up, again! Go team go!

Miscellaneous Action: five step around the chair to let Dasim flank.

Startled by the damage, Okawe gets serious about the fight. He brings his mighty sword upward and to the right in a broad slashing motion at the chair.

Hoping to aid finally dismantle the chair, Kiyoshi steps up with his heavy mace in hand and swings down at the chair.

Don't worry Kiyoshi, I highly doubt this chair has more than 43 HP

Okawe manages to split the chair like so much firewood with one singular mighty cleave. The bits of kindling scatter across the floor leaving behind a single glowing blue gem.

Proceed with the search for papers on the disappeared Paracountess.

Kiyoshi smiles gratefully at Okawe and scoops up the gem, chucking it to Theo for safe keeping.

"That 'thing' must be guarding something. We should search for anything that may help us complete our task."

Kiyoshi offers a brief prayer to Qi Zhong to guide his search casting Guidance on himself and begins searching the room.

"It attacked me when I began searching over here. I must be missing something." Okawe hadn't moved from his place in front of the evidence shelf, and gestured that they join him.

Theo sheathed his shortsword and nodded to Okawe,

"Hell of an arm you've got there friend, glad you're with us on this one." he dusted himself off and moved back to the cabinet labeled "Internal Security: Dossiers" and flicked back through it, "No telling if someone heard that, we'd best get a move on."

"Theo is right, we need to be quick." Dasim says while slipping his rapier back into its sheath. "I'd guess the code numbers we found on the documents in Zarta's study match the filing system in some way."

Trying to prove his theory he starts looking through the files to find the proper matches to the written codes.

@Kiyoshi: The room contains naught but the shelves, books, chairs and tables that do not animate.

@Theodore: You are able to locate several dossiers on fellow pathfinders, but nothing on Zarta. It appears such files do not exist. (You took 1 minute to locate all files)

@Okawe: You are able to locate the evidence on Zarta. There are allegations of her selling secret privileged information. In the evidence folder is a journal written in Zarta's own hand, detailing her trips to, from, and within. Absolom.

@Dasim: Most of the documents are encoded in a similar fashion. Do you want to search for something specific?

Kiyoshi scratches his head.

"I cannot find anything hidden in here. Perhaps the information is hidden in plain sight."

Kiyoshi moves over to one of the remaining cabinets, “Internal Security: Receipts” and begins flicking through, whispering a prayer to Qi Zhong as he does (more Guidance)

"Check the last cabinet, I shall check this one."

I'm not great at this so I'll use my Worldly trait to roll twice and take the highest as I don't have Perception trained.

He shows them the journals and asks them what they think.

Kiyoshi rifles through the cabinet, and in about a minute, he is able to find a prisoner receipt matching Zarta. It reads:

I'm making a Linguistics check to try and figure out what 'C' and 'R' are:

That's not a 1 in front of 23, its an I. I translates to A, so its A23. If you put an L and K in you get Filed Locker A23.

Kiyoshi puzzles over the document, moving to the evidence cabinet to look for a file A23, hopeful his guess is right.

Taking some time to decipher the cypher, you realize:

C = L and R = K

The evidence that Tancred used to indict Zarta consists of a series of letters written in a halting hand that resembles the paracountess’s. Upon closer examination, however, the letters’ writing differs significantly from the note found in Zarta’s study. The forged letters are addressed to a prominent House Thrune enemy, and in them “Zarta” discusses selling privileged Chelish information supposedly meant to foment political insurrection. Zarta’s personal travel logs, written in her natural hand, are also included. While the first entry—a trip to Absalom’s Ivy District—does indeed match with the letters’ indication of Zarta’s supposed treasonous activities, the second entry proves the paracountess was away from Absalom during a time the letters claim she met with her conspirators in the Petal District. Both documents are in “Evidence Locker #A23” as described in Zarta’s prisoner receipt document.

All that remains is to escape! You have approximately 30 minutes remaining.

Kiyoshi examines the information closely, glad they finally have what they require.

"Qi Zhong be praised. We have proof that the Paracountess has been framed. This documentation proves her innocence. We should return for our meeting. Quickly, if we all redress in our servant garb we can make a swift return."

The priest tucks the documents safely away, strips off his armour and redresses in the servant attire. Helping any others do the same he swiftly urges the group to retrace their steps to the meeting room.

Not eager to trudge back through the deception-muck of the embassy, he suggests that Theo or Dasim to check the north doors just in case.

The north door appears to be trapped and has a magical aura. It is reasonable to assume the room is guarded by magic at all times, even when the librarian is partying at the ambassador's ball.

Dasim looks at the north door but shakes his head as he gets closer. "Looks like it's trapped. So back through the vent everyone."

He then crawls back into the passageway and starts back toward the embassy.

Following your path back takes about 15 minutes (you have about 14 minutes remaining) when you arrive in the office you were left in. Unfortunately, you are still wearing the servants outfits. You are reasonably sure that wearing such clothing might tip someone off. Stripping the stolen garb and stowing it away in your packs leaves you with about 10 minutes before you are to receive the Ambassador, with the documents you were sent in with. Amara Li uses her message ability to let you know the Ambassador has excused himself from the party and is on his way.

Now that the Pathfinder Society knows where Zarta has been taken and who has taken her, they can get to work on either getting her back or at least figuring out how to deal with Tancred Desimire, who is now firmly in the Society’s sights. With the false evidence used by Desimire, the Pathfinder Society may be able to prove to the Chelaxians that Zarta is innocent, though how they can do so without admitting they searched the embassy is hard to see.

When the Pathfinders report back to Venture- Captain Valsin, if they successfully deduced Zarta’s situation without alerting the guards, he gives each of you a token stamped with the House of Thrune’s insignia. These tokens, which the Pathfinder Society previously received from Zarta as a sign of her good will. bestow a +3 circumstance bonus on Diplomacy checks intended to influence high-standing members of House Thrune, the Chelish government, or a Hellknight order in good standing. This bonus remains in effect as long as the token remains on its owner’s person; a token only imparts this bonus to the individual to whom it was given.

If the PCs make it out of the embassy with the Chelaxians none the wiser about their intentions and with the necessary information about Zarta’s situation, they have succeeded fully and earn 1 Prestige Point each.

Long Distance Support: You heard the Decemvirate’s call to arms as the Fifth Crusade began, but for whatever reason the society did not send you to the front lines immediately. You may nonetheless send extra supplies to aid your fellow Pathfinders. At the end of any scenario that does not take place in Mendev or the Worldwound, you may choose to spend 1 Prestige Point to send a cache of necessary supplies north to aid the war effort. On a line below, have your GM record where the scenario took place and initial the entry. Upon filling all five lines, you gain two benefits.
First, you gain a Mendevian Commendation for your tireless efforts to supply the crusade. A Mendevian Commendation grants you a cumulative +1 bonus on Charisma-based skill checks to influence Mendevian Crusaders (maximum +3).
Second, as a swift action while fighting a creature with the demon subtype or bearing an unholy symbol of a demon lord, you may grant all allies that you can see within 60 feet a +2 circumstance bonus on attack rolls, damage rolls, and saving throws against those creatures for one minute. When you use this second ability, cross it off your Chronicle sheet.
