If we look at fighters as the baseline for damage always being consistently high, and then look to other full BAB classes we see that all of them, excluding the Slayer which is just fighter v2, trade that consistent damage for their "time to shine" moments where they're allowed to do obscene damage.
Challenge, Smite, Rage (powerful blow), Favored Enemy, etc.
Where does an Avenger shine?
Skills? Slayer has them beat there and does more damage, Lore Warden too.
What is their "moment in the sun"?

It gets even hotter as you descend until you find yourself, puzzlingly, in a cave.
Outside the cave is an arid landscape, periodically swept by storms of fire.

This room seems to still be noticeably cooler than it should be given the surroundings. It's protected from the heat somehow.
At the opening of the cave is a large (over 10 feet tall), muscular humanoid with crimson skin. Its eyes are filled with the light of dying embers, and small black horns jut from its forehead. As it moves, wisps of smoke rise from its body.
Kn. Planes also applies.
"Who dares enter my cave without permission?" it booms "You are not the mortal I have bargained with!"

Psykoblade can deduce that since there is no wailing and gnashing of teeth in the air (which I imagine would be quite painful), this is not Hell or the Abyss, so is probably the Plane of Fire.
On the other hand, he's got no idea what this creature is.
