"We just want to help," Briana calls, trying not to look alarmed at the tense direction that things are beginning to take. "We've heard that we're not the first people to come looking for Miss Vancaskerkin and I'd be surprised if we aren't the last! If she's in some sort of trouble with the Tower Girls then maybe we can do something about that before they show up looking for a fight?"

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26

Hmm, rolled better than I thought but I realize that since we've already got weapons drawn/being drawn on both sides that this may fly like a ton of bricks. A girl's gotta try, though!

Quite concerned that a peaceful resolution is not to be had, Teldon readies himself to toss a bomb at the first man if anyone makes an aggressive move...

When Joanna draws her weapon and begins to move he throws it quickly before she gets close enough to be damaged by it.

touch attack (maybe flat footed too?): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
for: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
guessing that's a miss- they both take 5, DC 15 ref for half
Also, despite threats of torching places, I don't have any discoveries or anything to make my bombs start fires, so they're no more likely to do that right now than burning hands or whatever...

As Briana starts to talk, a flash of doubt appears on the face of one of the men, he turns to the other, ”Maybe we should look the other way? We ain’t been paid anyhows”. The other man cuts him off, ”We’ve got a roof over our head ‘ere…that’s payment enough on a day like this…besides, did ya hear what ‘appened to the last guy who failed the mistress?”. Turning to Briana, ”You can use your sweetened words all you like, you ain’t getting past”

…as Briana’s words fall upon deaf ears, Joanna draws her sword…and, in the cold driving rain, all hell breaks loose…

Just for clarification, there's no Surprise Round...I think all of you, standing in the rain, were fully expecting this to end with weapons drawn...so just go by normal initiative (which for Teldon will, I think, be tossing his bomb before anyone else is too close)

you don't need to allow the pre-move bomb thing if there's no surprise round. when my turn comes around if i want to toss a bomb I can always throw it past the goons and just deal splash damage so i don't hit Nalathi and Jo. thank you for trying to be accommodating though.

It's effectively your turn now...I run block initiative so you act as a group rather than wait for your specific Initiative count...so you all get to act before the Thugs...so, do you want to toss your bomb (or wait and see what Joanna / Briana are doing)

ok, i understand now. i'll wait and see what Jo and Briana do- risking some collateral damage (like possible hitting an innocent person I can't see) seemed like it might be worthwhile if it meant putting them on their heels before combat actually started, but now that we're into it i'll go for the informed decision. it's all about the cost/benefit analysis for Teldon :)

Everyone: the map is editable by anyone... can you please move your little avatar icons when you act so that the rest of us can see your position? which square Nalathi is standing in right now (for example) will make a big difference in my action. thanks!

Nalathi- you said you were charging but didn't add the +2 bonus to hit... was that just flowery language or did you forget the bonus? (versus a FF opponent, that +2 might make a big difference)

As things go south, Briana focuses her attention on the man who mentioned something about having a roof over their heads. Suddenly, a small vortex of wind and rain seems to engulf the man, obscuring his vision to some degree.

"What was that about being warm and dry? If I were you, I'd stand down before things get any worse."

Intimidate: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

Using Storm Burst; 4 uses left for today.

Taking Teldon's 'throw bomb' action as his chosen action to keep things moving along...plus it's a hit (or at least a 'splash' hit)...so all is good

As Joanna strides forward, adopting a combat stance, Teldon is quick to react...an alchemical concoction tossed high and long, impacting on the wall behind the thugs and showering them with shrapnel. Taking her cue, Nalathi plunges forward and tries to stab the nearest of the thugs...but his armour, glinting chainmail beneath the torn cloak, stops her trident from penetrating.

Standing back, Ziomarra and Briana call upon their skills, arcane and otherwise, to impede their foes.

Stepping back, both of the men let loose with their crossbow bolts, Teldon staggers backwards as one catches him in the shoulder...whilst the one aimed at Joanna is caught in the wood of her shield...

Both thugs take a 5ft step backwards before attacking

How could I possibly have been so stupid as to have forgotten to move behind Jo or even dropped prone when he was pointing that crossbow at me... Teldon chastises himself as he moves. He repositions himself farther from the guards and with Jo and Nalathi between him and them, drawing an extract as he does so. Once in his safer new position he chugs it and prepares himself for whatever happens next.

CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

i don't mind being botted occasionally but when you do so please try to remember that Teldon has 18 Int and grew up on stories of combat, so his tactical choices should be pretty sound. I know it probably wouldn't have much difference in that case.

Ziomarra – You don’t detect any magical effects, either on the guards you have just defeated nor within the guard room.

Peering in through the open door of the room that Piotr and Gregor emerged from confirms Gregor’s statement that you can’t access the building from their ‘room’; their ‘room’ being little more than a lean to shack against the walls of the main building…it is, at least, warm though…a small stove burns whilst a set of cards laid out across a table indicates how the guards spent the majority of their time.

Answering Teldon’s suggestion that someone else could have accessed the building unobserved, ”No way…me and Piotr kept a good watch…ain’t no-one who could have got in nor out without us seeing ‘em” and then, seeing Nalathi with her trident poised, ”Don’t!!! Nuh…nuh…nuh, please don’t...he’s a good kid…we was only ‘ere for the pay…we won’t be no more trouble to yer…”

Teldon – the door seems untrapped and, although mud splattered, in a reasonably good condition. So far as you can tell, it doesn’t appear that anyone has forced entry through this door.

A look of horror crosses Zee's face at Nalathi's comment about casually executing the thugs, but she relaxes as Joanna takes command of that situation.

She steps to the door of the thugs' shack, and confirms their statement that the rest of the building cannot be accessed from there. She then notices the deck of cards they were playing with, and collects it.

Zed: What kind of cards are they? My understanding is that Harrow decks are often used to play card games, but there are other sorts of playing cards as well. If it's a Harrow deck, Zee will confiscate it, as she deems using the Harrow for card games to be gravely disrespectful.

Note to the GM:
When Zee makes second level, her cartomancer power will be throwing Harrow cards as weapons, like the super-hero Gambit. For that, she'll need an expendable Harrow deck...

Stepping out of the shack, she points at the fallen thug. "Let's tie them both up and gag them, and stash them in their shack. We can release them when we're through here."

"Perhaps rather than taking the time to tie them up we should move quickly to meet with Miss Vancascerkin... if she's feeling uncomfortable enough about company to hire this lot she may try to flee before we can even tell her why we're here or who sent us if she sees or hears us restraining them," Teldon points out, "wouldn't it be enough to take their weapons and let him drag his friend off to a temple or some other safe place to recover?"

As he speaks he straightens himself up and attempts to knock some of the collecting rain and mud from his borrowed cloak, then reaches for the door handle. As he attempts to open it he calls out, "Natalya, a mutual friend feared you might be in some trouble and asked us to check in on you... we're here to help, so please don't run away or attack us."

if the door is unlocked I'll swing it open and see what's inside, otherwise I'll pause for a moment and listen for a response before informing my comrades that the door is locked.

Ziomarra – Taking a second look at the cards on the table, your worst fears are realised. The dog-eared cards are indeed Harrow…an old set for sure, badly faded, but complete.

When the Varisian suggests tying the thugs, Gregor starts to protest, before realising that being secured inside the building is an immeasurably better fate than being stabbed by Nalathi...and when Teldon suggests setting them free, "You won't see us again...me and Piotr ain't hanging around 'ere no more"

Getting no response from his greeting, Teldon opens the door…and is greeted by an abominable smell… Looking downwards, the cause of the smell is obvious; the entire floor of the room has collapsed into a pool of water below and, discharging into the pool, two oozing sewer pipes protrude from the wall. Between the entrance door and a door some fifteen feet north of you, a wooden plank has been placed as an improvised bridge over the sludge pit.

Above you, part of the ceiling has collapsed, revealing a crawlspace above…a rickety ladder leads from the water up to this crawlspace.

CG Female Human (Azlanti) Witch (cartomancer)/VMC Cleric of Desna 5/Evangelist 2
stats:
hp 46/46 | AC 17; touch 17; flat-foot 12 | Fort +5; Ref +7; Will +9 | Init +5 | Perception +9

Zee picks up the old and tattered Harrow deck from the table, placing it in one of the pockets of her scarf. Exiting the shack just as the Sczarni begs for his life, Zee glares at him again. "Bine. Lasă. Dar, dacă vom vedea din nou, nu vom fi atât de milos și va preda la gnome nostru!"

Varisian:
"Fine. Go. But, if we see you again, we will not be so merciful and will hand you over to our gnome!"

Intimidate: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26

To her friends, she says, "I think we should let them go. I don't think they'll bother us again." She glares at them one final time.

Heading over to the other door, she peers in behind Teldon.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Pointing to the shadows below, she whispers to Teldon, "There's something down there!"

Female Aasimar (Angelkin, Scion of Humanity) Bard 1 | HP: 9/9, NL: 0 | AC: 15/12/13, CMD: 15/13 | F: +1, R: +4, W: +3 (+4 vs. Charm and Compulsion)| Resist: Acid 5, Cold 5, Electricity 5 | Spells: 1st - 2/2 | Bardic Performance: 6/6 | Alter-Self: 1/1 | Init: +2, Per: +5 (Darkvision)

"Fighting someone who's trying to kill you is one thing. Killing a man in cold blood is another."

Joanna glares at Nalathi for a moment longer before turning to the man she downed. She closes her eyes and grabs the silver symbol about her neck as she bows her head.

"A small mercy for those who might see the error of their ways. This is all I ask."

Channel Positive: 1d6 ⇒ 5

After Teldon opens the door.

The stench that assaults her nose makes her eyes water and her face pale as she tries desperately not to lose her breakfast.

"Ar-are we sure she just didn't pass out from the smell?"

When Joanna's healing powers wash over the pair of guards, the fallen one coughs sharply into consciousness and, spitting blood from his mouth, stands...Gregor grabs his arm before he seeks to resume fighting....

"Piotr...we're leaving...Vancaskerkin gets what's coming 'er way..."

...leaving their weapons where they dropped in the mud, they hobble away...not taking a second glance back at the hut or you...

Map updated to show rooms that you have 'discovered / explored'

male Human Investigator [empirist] (VMC Magus) 7 | HP: 52/52 | AC: 18/13/16 | F +4, R +8, W +7 (+9 v Illusion) | Init +2 | Perception +17 (+20 v traps)

did Jo position herself to include Teldon in that channel?

perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Teldon pulls out another vial and drinks it cognatogen, then whispers to Zee, "where is it?"

I assumed Joanna healed everybody...Teldon is at full health (I try to keep track of everyone's health in the campaign tab...but if you ever think I've got you down as too
little (or too much) health...just say)

Female Aasimar (Angelkin, Scion of Humanity) Bard 1 | HP: 9/9, NL: 0 | AC: 15/12/13, CMD: 15/13 | F: +1, R: +4, W: +3 (+4 vs. Charm and Compulsion)| Resist: Acid 5, Cold 5, Electricity 5 | Spells: 1st - 2/2 | Bardic Performance: 6/6 | Alter-Self: 1/1 | Init: +2, Per: +5 (Darkvision)

"It's okay," Briana whispers to Nalathi. "I guess it varies from person to person, but most people will usually give mercy to foes that surrender, like those two did. It's a gamble since some will pretend to surrender in order to get the drop on you, so you kind of have to use your judgement or trust to the judgement of another."

After giving Nalathi a sympathetic pat on the shoulder, she moves to peer into the doorway of the building. "Ohh...what in the world could stink so horribly?"

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17

She pauses a moment and then whispers, "I hear it too!"
