If anyone could choose their parents, there would be only dwarves on Golarion. And a few stupid humans, I guess.

Eredur says nothing.
At first.
Then he speaks.

No, of course, no one can choose his parents. What matters isn't our heritage, but what we do with it. I guess Iomedae hopes each generation to strive to be better than its elders, whatever our race happens to be. And she accepts sincere repentance of creature of evil, I think. Or is that Sarenae? I don't know much about human gods. Theological debate aside, it doesn't matter much: we're Pathfinder agents, and we're supposed to help each other in time of need, to learn about each other, and, I guess, to respect each other. We could all have been killed by this creature, separately, and Karayan didn't seem to have a second thought about helping us in the fight. That's all that should matters. Thats big words from a small man, you could think.

The dwarf gets to Karayan, and offers his hand to shake, silently.

Then, true to his word, he walks to the elf, and offers her his hand to shake too.

Maybe it's time for me to learn the lessons I so freely give.

Feeling his acid-burnt skin where it is puckered and sore, Guillaume winces towards Dalen, "That was an unpleasant parting shot". Grimacing, "I was too slow, didn't see it coming"... the inquisitor, faithful of Iomedae, rests his hand on his fellow believer as Eamon sends a wave of healing washing across him, "Thankyou..."

Season of Ghosts

With the creature now dead, Maestro Bellowskin and the rest of the Andoran Chameleons crowd around the group. Faces that had moments earlier looked sullen and put out are now all smiles and wonder.

"That was amazing! You folks took care of that thing like it was just an overgrown grasshopper!"

"Master Dwarf, how did you learn to throw your weapon like that???"

"Did you see the strike that pale fellow made? It was like poetry in motion!"

"Yeah but that priest they've got made all the difference!"

"What a team!"

Maestro Bellowskin himself steps forward and enthusiastically pumps each one of your hands in thanks. "What timing, what timing! If you fine folks hadn't been here then we'd have all been lunch for that horrid beast! On behalf of the Andoran Chameleons, I thank you all! I don't have much to offer you in return for help but maybe a pack of our mask powder will be enough?"

As he begins digging into a pocket, a frown creeps across his face. "Hey! There were five packs in here last night but now there are only four!" He looks up, his gaze settling directly on Maximos. "Before that beast showed up, these people seemed to think you were hiding something Maximos. If you know why I'm missing some of our mask powder, I'd highly recommend you speak up now."

Maximos shuffles forward, looking for all the world like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar. "Yes, you're right," he replies sheepishly. "See, our mask powder isn't just powder - it's got magic mixed in with it. It can make you look like someone else. Just think about how you'd like to look, sprinkle it on your head, and presto change-o, you look like a different person entirely," he explains to the group. "And this morning I sold a packet of it to this lady fortune-teller. I suppose she'd heard about our ability to take on different forms for our performances, because she already had an idea of what the powder could do. She offered good coin..." he sighs, hanging his head.

You made the necessary checks earlier to convince Maximos to spill his guts - he just didn't get a chance to before the ankheg showed up :)

Shelya looks at the dwarf, Maybe this one isn't so bad after all. She grasps his hand in a firm, friendly handshake. "I think we could teach each other a lot, Dwarf..I mean Eredur," She smiles sweetly, truly meaning that. I don't think I have ever called a dwarf by their name.

As her friends are healed, she turns to Maestro Bellowskin, "How many times could someone change their appearance with one of those?"

Season of Ghosts

"Well, just once," the gnome responds, scowling at Maximos. "And it only lasts about two hours or so, so whoever this fortune-teller is, she'd not have long to use it. Maximos, how could you be such a fool??? Who knows what sort of scheme she wanted it for!"

"I'm sorry..." Maximos whimpers. "I...I'll go and buy all the ingredients you need to make more!" Turning to the rest of you, he adds, "And I'll tell you everything I can remember about her, if you really think she's up to no good! That's what you think, right? Karayan starts to laugh, an eerie high-pitched sound that is rather unnerving. "I am sorry, but after what Eamon said before that was just too funny."

He recomposes himself and continues "Any idea where she could be?"

Season of Ghosts

Maximos shifts uncomfortably as Karayan laughs and looks around at everyone. "Um...you folks sure do have an interesting rapport with each other...er, but nevermind," he responds, shaking his head as if to refocus his thoughts. "I have no idea where she could be, I really don't. She looked rather like something the proverbial cat dragged in, though - a half-elf with scraggly dark hair and a gold tooth. Really distinctive actually, if you happen to come across her and she's not already disguised herself then you'd probably recognize her right away. I do remember she was carrying around a bunch of flyers though, something about a market and free samples to foreigners? I don't know, I didn't get a good look at it."

At first it seems that Maximos has offered up all that he can remember about the mysterious woman but then, almost as an afterthought, he adds, "Oh - and funny thing, when she was asking about the mask powder she asked if it could make her look Qadiran. A little odd but I'm sure it'd still be an improvement over her current appearance!"

Season of Ghosts

While the group stands and makes their inquiries about the mysterious fortune-teller, Flovi flutters back over to perch on Dalen's shoulder.

"Did I help earlier? Was I helping? I've never been in a fight before and I wasn't really sure what to do..." she 'whispers' to the warrior and whoever else happens to be standing close. "But I hope I helped! That thing's shell was so hard...like a big, nasty beetle!"

Alrighty folks, so you've gotten some hints that the Green Market might be an important place to visit and you've also still got a place called Traitor's Mews in Old Korvosa that you could check out. I see one vote for heading to the Green Market next; any agreement? Disagreement? I'll give a little time for more folks to chime in since it's the weekend but either way I'll hopefully be moving you on either later today/tonight or tomorrow evening after I get home from work!

Season of Ghosts

"Well, the Green Market is closest," replies Maestro Bellowskin. "Traitor's Mews - why would you even want to go there? - is in Old Korvosa and that's almost on the other side of the city from here."

"And as far as Qadirans and the like go, I have no idea - probably depends on whether they're members of high society or not," the gnome shrugs. "But I don't think there's been any merchant caravans from Qadira come through anytime recently."

"Yes, I've not heard of any major arrivals of Qadiran caravans or nobility either," Maximos chimes in, still eager to help as much as he can.

"You said Traitor's Mews? That's a pretty poor section of town," the actor named Hamm points out. "Lots of beggars and people down on their luck live there but there are also a lot of thieves, thugs, and other bad elements that hide away there too because the city watch and the like don't patrol there near as much as they do in the nicer parts of town."

Dalen smiles at the little dragon and softly tells her, "yes, you were very brave, and that is something that can't be taught. We'll have to see what you can do incase we find ourselves fighting again, but you did very well for your first fight. Better than I did anyway."

The Taldane tracker gives a chuckle that fades and dies when Qadirans are brought up. She lacked the hatred her fellow Taldane nursed for them, but she had seen one too many specters of past wars with the eastern folk to be easy while dealing with them.

After a few moments of silence, she turns to the performers.

"Then best we keep our wits about us and our purses hidden if we head there. If I may, where is the Green Market and the Traitor's Mews from here? Would we pass the Green Market on the way to the Traitor's Mews?"

Eamon considers a moment then interrupts, So the market is clearly a place where foreigners and even Qadiran's might gather. The old haunted mansion was another lead we had before coming to this theater... The old woman with the gold tooth could easily disappear in a poor neighborhood such as the one Traitor's Mews is located. However, she'd be easily spotted at the green market...thus her disguise. Eamon purses his lips for a moment realizing that he just regretfully reached a conclusion Karayan had already come to. Karayan is correct, we must investigate what is happening at the market before proceeding to Traitor's Mews. If these flyers or samples, prove subversive or dangerous in anyway.... we should put a stop to it. Eamon looks at Karayan and offers a nod of respect. We may even get lucky and spot the old crone..even magical disguises have been known to fail. Eamon hearkens back to a particularly memorable night in the Valda household where his mother had come home frantic and in tears because her magical foundation had failed mid-ball and she had become somewhat of a laughing point for years to come with her peers. She never did seem to get over it ...and what little kindness she had left over for Eamon...completely evaporated after that event

Season of Ghosts

You can check Slide #6 to see a map of Korvosa and roughly where all the major landmarks you know of are located. The Green Market is located further south of where you are now and Traitor's Mews is basically in the opposite direction, in the northern part of the city. That said, it looks like consensus is leaning towards heading to the Green Market next! Currently have some company but I'll try and get a post up for you folks within the next few hours.

Yup. Dalen was just in character. She's never been to Korvosa before. :)

"What if something is going on at the Traitor's Mews? The two places we've been so far have had things either going wrong or about to go wrong. I know both are important, but from what they've told me, it's in two different directions," she says at Eamon's agreement with Karayan.

I'm fine with heading to the Green Market first since it's really close by.

Season of Ghosts

Now convinced that you have the thread of some sinister plot, you bid Maestro Bellowskin and the rest of the Andoran Chameleons goodbye - though the excitable gnome does make you promise to return when they put on their live performance of the Taldan classic, Maim. He also gives you a packet of their prized mask powder and gives a brief explanation of its properties and how it works.

You receive some Dust of Illusion.

Your purpose now more clear, you all hurry south to the Green Market to hopefully put a stop to whatever your mysterious fortune-teller may have planned. After a few minutes you arrive at the southern entrance to the Green Market, where iron gates stand open in welcome. Customers from every district of Korvosa and beyond crowd the kiosks and surround the stalls that comprise this popular indoor market. Along with its vast selection of imported and domestic produce, clothing, jewelry, and wine, the high-roofed, barn-like building boasts several impressive features, including a central fountain, an indoor green park at its northern end, and numerous glass skylights that can be accessed and opened with ladders and extending poles. The wooden walls that surround the market look to be roughly 20 to 25 feet high, as does the ceiling they support.

As you arrive, you can see that the market is absolutely packed with customers and vendors alike and realize that making your way about is going to be a slow process at best. Looking around, you all happen to spot Zeeva Foxglove standing near the other end of the market next to what appears to be a small indoor garden. She appears to be in deep conversation with another woman, this one dressed in all manner of finery. Something seems oddly familiar about this second woman and as she turns slightly to take a closer look at a crate of berries, you recognize her as the Lady Qualstair that you met earlier at the Frisky Unicorn.

Please see Slide #10! At this point, we are entering into quasi-combat rounds for reasons that will become apparent shortly. For this one I'm going to let you make your own Perception checks instead of rolling them for you. Also: every square on the map that isn't occupied by a stall or other inanimate object is currently considered Difficult Terrain due to the crowds of people. If you wish, you may attempt to make/cajole the crowd into giving way for you by making either a DC 15 Diplomacy (full-round action) or DC 20 Intimidate (free-action) check.

Well I'll be damned! How fortuitous for you! Maybe?

Perhaps it's the slightly unnatural aura that Karayan exudes as he strides forward into the crowd or maybe it's the threat of violence that does it, but a nearby chunk of the crowd parts almost immediately to allow him (and anyone following behind him) to pass.

"He didn't have to be so rude," mutters a harried-looking woman with a basket in one hand and a baby on her hip. "Hush, woman! He's got a funny look in his eye - I wouldn't draw his attention," hisses a man, presumably her husband, as he hustles her out of the way. Meanwhile, focusing less on the crowd parting in front of them and more on Zeeva and Lady Qualstair further away, both Shelya and Eredur see it at the same time - a Qadiran woman, perhaps even a princess judging by her attire, sneaking up behind the two women with an open vial in her hand!

"Well I'll be..." Eredur snorts. Then, he raises his voice so that the rest of you can hear him. "There she is! Right behind those two!" he points.

"I see her too!" Shelya cries. "She has blackfingers paste on her hands! It keeps one from accidentally poisoning themselves! She means to poison one of them!"

Though neither Zeeva nor Lady Qualstair seem to hear their shouts of alarm the Qadiran woman, whom you all now see, turns her head slightly in the direction of the group. A look of surprise flits across her face as she spots you, immediately followed by anger. Dalen suddenly feels the weight on her shoulder lessen as Flovi takes flight into the air. "Bad woman! We have to stop her!" she cries as she zips towards the would-be assassin.

Both elf and dwarf plunge into the crowds as well, now realizing that this must be the ultimate disaster that the harrow cards had foretold. Seeing that Karayan's threats of violence had sufficed to get the crowd moving, Eredur attempts to do the same and clear the way for Eamon and himself. "You there! Move or I'll turn you into a newt!" he intones at a group of youths loitering near an apple stall, waggling his fingers at them in an attempt to be scary.

Eredur Intimidate: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

But instead, the young men and women burst into gales of laughter. "Hah! That's the funniest thing I've seen all day," one howls. "What, you think you're some kind of wizard or something? Dwarves ain't got the head for magics, my pa told me so!"

Shelya Diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

"Now now...I really wouldn't antagonize him if I were you," Shelya smiles sweetly at the group. "You're just lucky that you've caught him and I in a good humor - hence the little joke. Now if you'd be so kind as to step aside and let us through?" she asks. For a moment, the youths simply look at her and then shrug. "Yeah sure, we'll move," the leader grins and motions for his friends to make way for Eredur (and Eamon).

"Thanks Shel," the dwarf nods as he hustles forward.

Having been spotted, the Qadiran assassin drops the vial she'd been holding as her hand dips into her pocket. She pulls out a card and glances at it, before smiling wickedly. Then she falls back a bit from her intended targets - whether in an attempt to escape or for some other purpose isn't clear.

Season of Ghosts

Karayan continues to use his presence and piercing gaze to part the crowds around him, charging up next to Zeeva and Lady Qualstair. Both ladies jump as he skids to a stop in front of them, clearly startled.

"Oh! Hello again," the noblewoman smiles as she recognizes him. "I did not expect to see you again! What brings you, and your companions I presume, to the market? Are you here to partake in the free samples as well?" she asks, holding up one of the flyers for the Green Market that you'd seen earlier at the Frisky Unicorn.

Zeeva, however, looks less enthused to see you - in fact, she looks a little alarmed. "Master Karayan, what are you doing here? Have you learned something?" she asks anxiously.

Meanwhile, further back, the rest of the group continues trying to make their way through the crowds but progress is infuriatingly slow. Dalen, Eamon, and Guillaume all push forward as best as they can but will it be enough?

Moved several of you forward on the map. If you fail to make the Diplomacy or Intimidate check it doesn't mean that you can't move forward at all, only that you continue treating your movement for the round as if in Difficult Terrain. For example, Karayan was able to move normally both rounds due to making the Intimidate checks but the rest of you have only been able to proceed at double the movement cost thus far. I'm also assuming that everyone has been trying to double-move so far so I've moved people in accordance with that. If I'm wrong, please let me know!

Although Shelya and Eredur both attempt to mimic Karayan's cold stare and his purposeful stride, neither of them seem to be able to pull it off with as much panache as the man himself - though Eredur comes close! Unable to make the crowds move, both elf and dwarf slog forward as best as they can and slowly but surely they close the gap between themselves and the two endangered women.

"Right!" Flovi calls back to Dalen as she continues to zip forward and quickly overtakes the assassin, flying in crazy circles around the Qadiran's head just as she'd done earlier with the ankheg.

"Here here here she's here!" the little pseudodragon cries as she attempts to bite...

Flovi Bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Damage: 1d2 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1

...and manages to nip the woman's ear. She utters a yelp of pain and scowls up at the tiny beast giving away her position! Working quickly, she lights the small tube that she holds in her hand (which she drew as she moved last round, my fault for forgetting to state this) and with a flick of her wrist she flings it onto the stall next to where Zeeva, Lady Qualstair, and Karayan are standing. Almost immediately, the stall bursts into flames and people begin screaming and running in a panic! The sparking, hissing tube drops to the ground and is quickly lost among the crowd as they kick it this way and that in their attempts to flee the area.

The woman cackles gleefully, crying out, "Qadira shall dance on your ashes!"

You now have a small fire burning in the indicated square, which will begin to spread unless extinguished. You may attempt a DC 15 Survival check to douse the flames, cast Create Water (50% chance to douse one square), cast other spells with the cold or water descriptors, or come up with some other strategy!

Eredur calls upon his magic and sweeps his hand towards their target - small red petals begin to rain down on both Flovi and the Qadiran woman. He waits...but nothing seems to happen. The Qadiran glances his way and flashes him a smug smile, the magic having had absolutely no effect on her.

@Eredur - Based on past experience, you're pretty sure that it wasn't even a matter of resisting the spell but that it just didn't work at all (Immunity). Sorry...that normally would've been a great idea!

"Silly dwarf-person, sleep helpers don't work on Flovi!" the little pseudodragon laughs before diving down towards the Qadiran in an attempt to slow her down as Dalen had asked. At the same time, Karayan too works his magic...and the smile on the Qadiran assassin's face is replaced by a look of shock and fear as she quite suddenly stops everything that she's doing to stand stock still.

"Awwww yeah, I did it! I got her I got her I got her!" Flovi whoops as she grabs the woman by the hair - sort of, anyway. Clearly she's certain that this new development is entirely her doing.

Meanwhile, Zeeva finally springs into action and grabs at Lady Qualstair's arm. "My lady! This way!" she cries, pulling the woman away from the burning stall and the impending melee. As she does, she glances over her shoulder at Guillaume. Though not a word is spoken, Guillaume suddenly feels as if the fates are watching out for him just a little bit.

Season of Ghosts

Okay, going to take us out of combat rounds now since between Dalen and Shelya you'll be able to restrain the Qadiran woman before she gets a chance to act again and Karayan and the others working together will be enough to put out the fire before it spreads any further!
______

Acting quickly, both Dalen and Shelya set to work restraining the Qadiran woman before Karayan's magic can wear off. Meanwhile, the rest of you work together clearing the area of flammable objects and beating at the flames with cloaks and anything else handy until the flames are finally extinguished. With the threats of fire and violence removed, the crowd finally begins to calm themselves and more than a few curious onlookers stand and watch as you all take stock of the situation.

"Heavens!" gasps Lady Qualstair. "I never in my life expected to encounter this kind of violence here at a market. What on earth was that woman attempting to do?"

"I don't know for certain, but it wouldn't have led to anything good. Not at all," Zeeva responds, face pale and shaking slightly.

During all this the bound woman sits in silence, a sullen look upon her face.
