SR DOES apply to the snakes. Good call, Salouris!

The necrocultist rises to bring the temple courtyard into view, the mountain breeze coiling in a cold vortex behind him, sending Tanbaru into a flat spin.

While his hands beat an irregular cadence, Salouris throws back his head as his oily, black pupils turn milky white …

Fort vs DC 19: 1d20 ⇒ 3

Although he cannot see the green snake's eyes from this range, both Salouris and Harmonius note the serpent begins twisting and turning like a writhing, hissssing Arcadian Island hula hoop above the temple stairs.

While Pitbull climbs to Harmonius’ aid, Asbo’s beak and claws flash around the stone corner, connecting twice with yellow. Unfortunately, the critical threat does not confirm and the owlbear seems to have the same problem with lesser damage output that Dusk and Harmonius do.

Asbo:
Did you apply a -4 penalty for melee attacking around the corner (cover)? I know it’s technically an AC bonus, so I should account for it. But just checking :)

A 21 is a hit, even if the -4 was not applied.

EDIT: BTW, no problem with setting up a flank with Asbo.

My first choice is to have Asbo step into the flank. Since Dusk requested it right after Asbo went, could he have taken the 5 foot step right then? If not, Dusk will take the 5 foot step to the scenic cliff square.

Since the new snake is not my studied target, I have to wait until I sneak attack it to make it my studied target. Advanced Class Guide pg. 53 "If a slayer deals sneak attack damage to a target, he can study that target as an immediate action, allowing him to apply his studied target bonus against that target (including to the normal weapon damage roll). So as soon as I hit this snake, Dusk will get an additional +2 to hit and damage (not included in the attacks below). The attacks are taken in the order listed below. GM please add my +2 to attack and damage as soon as the first hit occurs.

Main hand with flank and piranha strike:

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24for1d6 + 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + (3, 5) + 2 = 11damage

@Harmonius, all good and thanks!

The perfect gentleman, Harmonius graciously allows Pitbull to precede him if she wants to. The dashing bard continues to maintain snake-eye contact with the emerald cobra.

@Dusk, I’m having difficulty seeing how Asbo can 5’ step to flank with you, because of the cliff’s hard corner.

I believe from your post that ideally you would prefer to flank, so have moved you 5’ to the west.

Speaking of dashing … Dusk mades a bladed dash, 5’ to the west, his sharp, blending blades purée Ruby, creating a cool, strawberry-colored serpent smoothie for Asbo to enjoy.

Salouris is going to use his Mind's Eye Focus Power to try and look around the courtyard, and up the steps and beyond. Essentially it functions like an invisible sensor I can see though as if it were my own eye. It can't get through doors or any solid object (though as Fine size it can fit through some gaps), but I'd like to spend a few rounds using it to give a sense of and check out the layout of the temple above as best I can in the rounds it will take the rest of the party to climb or hop up. It takes me my Standard action each round to maintain and use it and can fly around 60 feet a round.

He looks up to the 1d2 ⇒ 2 west. [b]"Well, all of the buildings ringing these courtyard seem bereft of life at the moment. Let's go record what's still here. Come along Tanbaru: maybe something will jog your memory."

Pitbull notes the call has come in to go west, so she grabs Asbo and moves up from to scout.

She will move along the first arrow, and assuming it is safe, she will call the party over to form up in vicinity of the blue box as she pushes forward the second bound

Pitbull and Asbo continue to scout and pause to check the scent in the area...

The oni looks doubtful but condescends to trail behind the necrocultist without needing further encouragement.

“Well I’ve got nothing better to do.”

Pitbull and Asbo’s cautious scouting confirms what Salouris’ Mind’s Eye revealed – a large space divided by stone columns. Apart from a pile of blankets lying in the southwest corner, the room is deserted.

Survival DC 17:
Only three of the blankets appear to have been used recently.

“I’m drawing a blank.” Tanbaru *sighs* “Where to next?”

Asbo and Pitbull smell the blankets to get the scent of their owners, "Easy to track now"

Pitbull brings the party up, then starts pushing east, are we missing some stuff north? or are those gaps only windows?

Salouris shrugs back at the aasimar. "Energy is energy; the use is far more important than the source."

He then moves to trail Pitbull, making note of the unusually prevalent use of columns all around.

Before uncovering more of the Undermountain’s secrets, the party makes use of a number of resources to restore Dusk and Harmonius back to full health.

The party scouts then lead the group into a space in the east of the temple that smells of old paper. Its walls are lined with draws carved from the living stone. Between the shelves, three windows offer majestic views over dozens of snowy peaks.

Sitting on the only open drawer is a pile of old guestbooks.

Knowledge (local or geography) DC 16:
Tian-Dtangs consider it polite for visitors to make a record of one’s visit in a guestbook.

Dtang, Tien or Nagaji speakers ONLY may make a Perception DC 15 roll:

You notice nearly all the entries in the guestbooks have been made in the Autumn and Spring, around the time the mountain streams freeze and thaw respectively.

After the year 3945 AR, the number of visitors dropped to just a few pilgrims per year. They then stop altogether for several hundred years.

All records from the last 300 years are written in Nagaji. According to the last entry, persons named Kolmorrow, Marsiass and Ngon Le arrived 3 months ago.

Kishara moves to look over the guestbooks, watching carefully for any hazards. "It's custom to sign in. Might as well. Maybe those who came before did us did too." She gets out her pen from her Scrivener's kit and writes in their names.

"Hmm, a lot of info here. Can anyone make heads or tails of it? I do have a scroll that will let us read it if nothing else. Hailey, I think you can use this, yes?" She pulls a scroll of comprehend languages and offers it to the cleric.

Kish has UMD, but can't take 10 to activate yet. She will let someone cast the scroll on themselves. Hailey is probably the best bet since she has the best perception.
Sorry I flubbed the first part and then missed the last of the fight. I tried to post Tues night/Wed morning but I couldn't get the site to load. >_<

No worries, Kishara! I’m just glad everything’s OK.

While she can’t read the guestbooks, Kishara does find an unlocked, untrapped box labelled, 山紧急

Tien or comprehend languages or Linguistics DC 20:
‘In case of emergency on the Mountain’

If you open the box:
It contains five scrolls of cure critical wounds, two scrolls of expeditious retreat (CL 5th), two scrolls of lesser restoration, and a scroll of spider climb.

Hidden in a stone drawer at ankle-height, the party burglar also finds a beautifully illuminated manuscript. The cover’s flowing gold script reads:

trò chuyện yên tĩnh trong Gỗ

Dtang or comprehend languages or Linguistics DC 20:

Entitled Whispers in the Wood, the ancient text is written in an early dialect of Dtang, describing kami of all kinds.

As Kishara mentions the purpose of the books, Salouris picks up one and carefully scribes his name in Elven, with as much careful caligraphy as possible.

Profession Scribe: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Appraise: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27

His quill still dripping, the elf proffers it to anyone else who would care too before hurrying over to the manuscript within the concealed drawer.

"This, this is in pristine condition! Whispers in the Wood: I've seen copies of this text on the kami before but never one so fully engraved. The binding also seems to indicate this is an early edition. Perhaps when we return I should spend some time familiarizing myself with the Dtang tongue..."

Realizing the rest of the party may have slightly different priorities, he pauses enough to nod towards the box the rogue found. "Oh, and that seems to be some 'mountain disaster emergency case'. Whatever that means."

Pushing North now

The walls and columns of this small building are covered in carvings of mythological scenes. Three sitting pillows of slightly different sizes lie on the floor.

Perception or Survival DC 16:
You notice that the pillows on the floor look relatively new and show signs of recent use.

On the northern wall, two inhuman creatures with hair burning like flames hold down a third creature with rough, chiseled features atop an anvil. The two fiery creatures have hammers raised as if shaping their victim in a blacksmith’s forge.

Behind them, a towering monstrosity crushes an army beneath its elephantine feet.

Knowledge (planes) DC 22:
You identify the inhuman creatures as highly stylized depictions of fire and earth elementals, respectively.

The background image suggests a scene on the Plane of Earth, with the colossus crushing fiery creatures.

The east wall depicts muscular, horned humanoids — one holding a crystalline spike the size of a spear — clambering up a hill toward a fiery circle. The monstrous creature from the north wall storms after them.

Knowledge (planes) DC 18:
You recognize the horned humanoids as efreeti (fire genies) and the fiery circle as a temporary gate.

Knowledge (history) or Profession (soldier) DC 20:
You recognize the genies’ tactics as a planned retreat to lure the immense monster into a trap.

The south wall shows the horned humanoids driving the spike into the monster, pinning it against the wall of a cavern far above a pool. Within an abstracted inset, possibly miles below the impalement scene, a giantess with ibex’s horns curling from her head howls in pain.

Knowledge (religion) DC 18:
You believe the horned giantess is Yamatsumi, the god of volcanoes and winter.

Knowledge (geography or nature) DC 15:
You gather the cavern is not a conventional cave but rather the flooded basin of a dormant volcano.

The west wall’s carvings depict a mortal woman who carries a battered suit of armor, gazing up at a towering, tree-like old man standing over her.

With one hand he points to the snow-capped mountains behind him. The other he uses to gesture palm-outward to the woman, as if instructing her to go no further.

Knowledge (history or nobility) DC 20+:
You recognize the woman as local saint named Ankilhi. She is known for her 68 great deeds, which included slaying great beasts, acts of kindness and unifying the people against a common enemy.

Knowledge (history or nobility) DC 25:
You can identify the armor she carries as that of the graveknight Pnao Kilnak, whom she destroyed in single combat.

As the story goes, she sought to destroy the graveknight’s armor with Yamatsumi’s fire, but the Mountain Lord spoke of a slumbering evil that the armor might waken. Instead he bid her to melt down the fragments and forge them into a powerful weapon to wield in his name.

Knowledge (planes or religion) DC 20+:
The massive tree-man is clearly a kami of immense power.

Knowledge (planes or religion) DC 30:
The old man is a jinushigami, one of the most powerful types of kami in existence, known to guard immense natural features like forests and mountain ranges.

Knowledge (geography) or Survival DC 18:
The mountains behind the tall tree-like man are part of the Kullan Dei system and are located in the border region between Dtang Ma and Nagajor.

In fact, this temple is in the foothills of those very mountains.
