Desh Greyskin

Desh holds up his hand for a halt, stooping low to run a finger lightly along what looks like it might be a trigger mechanism ... for once able to actually keep the group from walking blindly into something dangerous.
He looks for a way to safely disable it.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

I've moved the party back a bit on the map.
You fail to disable the trap. But, you also don't set it off. You get the sense that it was really close, though. You think you almost set it off.
What happens though, is initiative:
Grog: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Desh: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Flyndal: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Koohinor: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Ettercap: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

Sorry for jumping the gun. I removed the post. :)
Does Desh know what it is? If so, what does he know of it's special offensive capabilities? IF a high enough roll, any defensive abilities to note?
Know: Dungeoneering: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
"BAH!" Desh growls as he draws a javelin and hurls it at the creature. "Don't go any forward than I am now ... it's trapped."
Draw javelin, throw javelin.
Javelin: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Then take 5' step backwards (map updated), holding longspear at the ready (and ready to make AoO's should it close to melee)
Grog half orc

On my turn. I'll move 30' over by the wall and throw an axe at the ettercap. btw I'll be back tomorrow morning. I'll be away from the PC tonight out and about :) If its near me I'll attack with my greataxe
attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
2nd round with greataxe if that's ok?
attack w/greataxe: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
damage: 1d12 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
GM Engleaktig

No prob. :-) Yep, with that roll, you know all about ettercaps.
The javelin misses.
Sure, Grog, you can post your 2nd round action, too. Unfortunately, the ettercap is out of reach, for now.
The rest of the party can go.
Flyndal Danwrick
|
Flyndal's sword clatters to the floor as he retrieves his commandeered shortbow.
Attack, Shortbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Desh Greyskin
|
"Ettercap!" Desh barks out (so his teammates can know what he knows), "Poisonous bite. Spits webs. Can climb like a fiend!"
Let me know if you have any specific info about the Ettercap. But i'm guessing our basic plan is going to be "beat it into the ground' ... which requires no special information. :D
Flyndal Danwrick
|
Grumbling at the necessity, Flyndal fires again with the borrowed shortbow.
Attack, Shortbow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3

Realizing the creature's a tough target, Kohinoor begins chanting one of Sarenrae's mantras. The rhythm settles her friends' nerves, and they find themselves more focused on the battle.
Casting Bless, +1 to Attack Rolls and Saves vs. Fear for everyone.
Desh Greyskin

Desh rushes to Grog’s side, setting his longspear to receive the Ettercap should it close to melee.
Move next to Grog (map updated). Then Ready a longspear attack should the Ettercap get in reach. (I’m hoping to fish out two attacks as he closes, one for readied, one for the movement-based AoO.)
Conditions/Effects: Bless
Current ACP: 0 (encumbrance: light)

Grog breaks out! (For future reference, it's an escape artist or strength check, not CMB. But, it's of no matter. :-) You made it anyway!) Grog has a move action remaining, if he wishes to use it.
The ettercap is uncertain:
- You avoided the latest trap.
- You seem well prepared.
- He'll try to web a different target.
Hm...
- Move Action: Move to the other webs
- Standard Action: Web 1d20 ⇒ 18
Now Koohinor is webbed!
The party is up.

Desh steps to his left to gain a clear throwing lane, then he draws and hurls a javelin ... which slams into the spider-abomination with near perfect accuracy.
5' step to the west (can someone updae his position on the map?). Draw and throw javelin (including Bless).
Javelin: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 1 = 24 <— CRIT?
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
crit confirm: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 1 = 8
add'l damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Whoops. I thought it was like grapple. I move next to Koohinor for my move action
No worries! :-) Impossible to keep it all in your head.
____________________________________________________________The ettercap is wounded further. It can't take too much more of this.
Flyndal and Koohinor are up!
Desh Greyskin
|
Finally on my laptop. Got Desh's and Grog's positions updated on the map. Grog, let me know if that's what you had in mind. I didn't know if you wanted to be blocking Kohinoor from the Ettercap or not.

Kohinoor lets out a little scream as the web hits her in the face. Struggling, she tries to tear it off her, but her efforts don't seem to be helping. In fact, they might be making it worse. She eyes the ettercap, hoping it's not looking at her.
Strength: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Awaiting Flyndal's post.
____________________________________________________________
After Flyndal goes:
The ettercap looks at Koohinor and begins to drool. It takes a 5-foot-step within the webs (its movement is unhampered by webs).
It shoots another web 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 and misses!
____________________________________________________________
Let's wait for Flyndal before the party goes again. :-)
Flyndal Danwrick

I'm not sure if the webs provide cover. If so, I'll move to a clear spot.
Flyndal continues to pepper the ungodly spider-faced thing with arrows, longing for it to cross the trap so he can fight it with his blade, instead.
Attack, Shortbow, Bless: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 1 = 20
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Desh Greyskin
|
Oh, I guess we’re back up, huh? :)
The lean half-orc launches a third javelin, though the ettercap seems far more ready this time.
Draw and throw a third javelin, then back to being ready with his longspear
javelin: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 3 + 1 = 13
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Despite the poor throw, Desh shoots the ettercap a feral grin.
Grog half orc
|
On my turn when its next, if I can. I'll free Kohinoor from the web. Str check or can I damage the web with the edge of the blade of my axe. Just to damage the web, slowly using it one handed?
STR check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
axe damage: 1d12 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Kohinoor an-Gul

Shooting a quick nod of thanks at Grog, Kohinoor eyes the ettercap, curious about what it'll do next. She lobs another burst of flame in its direction.
Fire Bolt: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Damage?: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Flyn sends another arrow at the ettercap, this one off-target.
5' Step SW
Attack, Shortbow, Bless: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 5 + 1 = 13
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Desh Greyskin

The map shows that the ettercap closed to melee with Flyndal! >:D
”Big mistake!” Desh snarls as the creature steps from its webs, waiting until it closes with Flyndal to jam his longspear into the soft spot up under its arm.
STAB IT!
longspear: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 3 + 1 = 22
damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

The ettercap expires!
The party explores the cavern. The ettercap nest is suspended from the ceiling. You find within various shiny objects the monster collected from various victims: a few gems, pendants, and gold pieces, and a masterwork silver short sword. The cocoons hanging behind the altar contain a number of human bodies.
Two individuals are still alive, though unconscious!
Kohinoor an-Gul
|
Actual alive, or spider puppet alive? :P
Kohinoor examines the party for injuries, and, on finding none, helps them examine the ettercap's nest. When the survivors are found, she looks to the others, making sure they're ready for anything, and channels positive energy, being sure to capture the unconscious people in the radius.
Channel: 1d6 ⇒ 6
After the two regain consciousness, she starts the interviewing process. "Do not fear, friends. The creature that brought you here is dead, and we're here to bring you back to Lady Riverbane, and from there, to the Marquis."
Flyndal Danwrick
|
Retrieving his sword, Flyndal moves over to help the ettercap's victims down. The shiny baubles catch his eye, and he makes a mental note of their locations. "Desh, you got a waterskin?"
Desh Greyskin
|
Desh fishes out his waterskin and tosses it over to Flyndal, then—as Kohinoor begins to address the pirate survivors—the lean half-orc kneels down over the ettercap.
After retrieving his javelins and cleaning his weapons, he searches the ettercap's body ... as much out of curiosity as anything else. As he finishes up, the trapped section of the floor catches his eye, and his feral grin returns to his lips as he looks back at the ettercap.
Then he pushes the ettercap into its own trap, watching for the satisfying results.
"What?" he says as he notices his teammates looking at him, "someone could step in there."
Should we interview the survivors to see if their story matches up with Lady Riverbane's?
GM Engleaktig

"Do not fear, friends. The creature that brought you here is dead, and we're here to bring you back to Lady Riverbane, and from there, to the Marquis."
"No! Not Lady Riverbane! It was her betrayal that put us in this trouble! She's not to be trusted!" I know you're all shocked. :)
Flyndal Danwrick

"No! Not Lady Riverbane! It was her betrayal that put us in this trouble! She's not to be trusted!" I know you're all shocked. :)
"Well, the Marquis won't like hearing that - why would Riverbane betray you?"
Desh Greyskin

Looks in the pit. Damm ettercap
Desh punctuates Grog’s statement by spitting into the pit. But the outburst from the sailors draws his stare. And he wanders over to watch the interview, nodding along to Flyndal’s question.

I know you're all shocked. :)
:D
Well, I've only clung so doggedly to it because of that aced "Hunch" roll in the opening act. And cause I wanted Desh to play the part of the wolf on the hunt ... I actually expected the betrayal thing to be wrong for most of our adventure, but there was no way Desh was gonna let go of that bone.
I'm pleasantly surprised to see Desh was actually right. :)
