Desh Greyskin
|
Once below-decks, Desh continues on his quiet advance, moving cautiously towards the front of the ship, (Lucky the) longspear ready and senses alert.
Cant edit the map right now (from my tablet), but Desh will move along the port wall searching for any clues or threats, on his way to that front door. He has Darkvision.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24; +1 vs traps
Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Desh Greyskin
|
Oh, my mistake. I misread and thought it was darkness that was blocking vision. That'll teach me to post before coffee.
Desh pauses at the base of the stairs, considering the webbing and what may lay in wait where they can't see. "Any ideas?"
Desh isn't trained in Know: Nature (which I assume is the appropriate skill), but would he know any additional ways to deal with the webbing?
Know (Nature), untrained: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14
If no one has any better ideas, and that roll doesn't reveal any useful tricks to get rid of the webbing without having to get right up on it, Desh will continue as planned, using his dagger to slash the webbing as he slowly creeps forward. (hopefully using the same rolls?)
So just for clarity, in this situation, he'd be sneaking forward, using his dagger to slash webbing as he goes, with his longspear held in his off-hand.

Flyn shakes his head, drawing his sword and following Desh as quietly as he can.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Map is set to view only.
Desh Greyskin
|
Desh grunts skeptically, "Whole place would go ... us, too." With no better options presented (unless Grog has something) Desh skulks forward, ready to quietly slash some webbing on his way toward the front.
Desh Greyskin
|
Kohinoor cast Light on her holy symbol when we came aboard, which I assume she's been maintaining. And Desh/Grog both have Darkvision 60. That's all I'm aware of.

As the part attempts to move forward, three giant spiders come out from the webs! (They're not hampered by the webs. Their "suprise round" action is simply to move up to the party.)

Can’t edit the map. :(
So is pretty much everything difficult terrain? Or just the squares that have a web image in them? i’ll post actions as if every square is difficult, but if Desh has the available movement to make it another square behind the first spider, he will do so.
Desh explodes into motion, launching himself around Kohinoor’s left side and up the wall a few steps before plummeting down and driving his dagger into the nearest spider’s flank.
Tumble around the left side of the Red Spider (up on that box), using the Tubmle to also avoid an AoO.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Then dagger-stab him.
dagger: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
If Desh has enough movement (considering Acro’ing and difficult terrain due to webs), he’d prefer to make the attack from one square up (which is a flank with Grog). If this is possible, add +2 to the attack roll and Sneak Attack: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Easily avoiding the spider's bite, Kohinoor sidesteps toward the ship's hull. Tossing her holy symbol into her right hand, she pulls her scimitar from its sheath and swings it as quickly as she can, but the attack is rushed and finds only air.
Scimitar Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Scimitar Damage?: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Five-Foot Step to the left, Move to draw weapon, Standard to attack the Red Spider

The red X's on the map are the highly flammable items mentioned earlier.

Desh: Just the areas with webs. You can't go through the webs without a check to avoid getting stuck. With that acrobatics check and the given terrain, you wouldn't be able to get around the spider in front of Koohinor, though you'd be able to get around the one to the right of Grog. I'll put you there, if that's OK. If so, you'll get the flank.
Desh moves deftly around the hold and stabs a spider (blue) right in the eye! It still stands, but it doesn't look like it could take another hit like that.

Koohinor moves and swings, but is unable to penetrate the spider's carapace.

It's a shame we're still not getting posts from Rod, but I appreciate you helping to maintain our momentum, DM Engleaktig. :)
Desh growls out a laugh as Flyndal and Grog hack one spider to death.
Then, instead of pulling his blade from where he just jammed it into his own target’s chitinous hide, he lets go and kicks at the dagger’s protruding hilt … trying to drive it further into the creature’s body with the sole of his boot.
Then he dodges north, bringing his longspear to bear to distract the third spider in the hopes that Flyndal or Grog can capitalize and bring it down quickly.
Dagger-attack on Blue spider (including flank + sneak attack).
Dagger: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 3 + 2 = 18
damage: 1d4 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 3 + (2) = 9
Then drop the dagger and 5’ step one square up (to provide a flank for whomever steps into the square formerly occupied by the dead red spider). I've already updated Desh's position on the map.

Before he dies, the spider thinks: "I should have been a dentist like mother always wanted."
And it expires.

The party searches the boat and finds the remains of several priates. You also find three potions of lesser restoration—their contents labeled in Osiriani—in one of the many containers. The fore cabin contains a desk and some papers, including the ship’s logbook. That document clearly indicates that the Hanspur's Luck was ordered by Lady Riverbane to come to this location and await further instructions.
Flyndal Danwrick
|
"Didn't the Black Marquis send them here looking for that other ship, lost hunting treasure? I suppose this suggests plotting on her part - but if that's the case, it might be best not to let on that we've found this." Flyn says, hefting the logbook.
Desh Greyskin

A quick jab as the spiders died ...
As the final spider falls, Desh gives his teammates a wolfish grin ... really more of a baring of teeth. He claps Flyndal on the back, "You didn't even die this time."
________
Desh lets out a low growl at the document as he slips one of the potions into his pack. "I'm no good at lying. And if it comes to a fight ... drop her first.” He waggles his fingers in a "magic-y" way, "She casts spells."
Kohinoor an-Gul

Kohinoor looks worried for a moment, but her face clears quickly. "Didn't Lady Riverbane have command of the pirates who came here before us? It would make sense that she was giving the orders if that was the case."
Desh Greyskin

Desh doesn't make any more fuss over it, and he hikes his longspear in preparation to head back to the Scrag Fish.
I can't think of anything else to do while down here. I'd suggest we heal up, but nobody actually got hurt down here. :)
Kohinoor an-Gul
|
Yeah, pretty clean fight, really.
Kohinoor turns and follows Desh out of the dark hull of the ruined ship. "So, what else did we need to do for this job? Deal with the spiders, find the missing ship, and find the crew, right? I assume there were more than three spiders, and we have to track the crew down, so we'd best keep searching."
Flyndal Danwrick

The party searches the boat and finds the remains of several pirates.
"I think I found some of them..." Flyndal says, nudging what appears to be a femur with his boot.

GM Engleaktig wrote:The party searches the boat and finds the remains of several pirates."I think I found some of them..." Flyndal says, nudging what appears to be a femur with his boot.
From what you've observed upon your ship, these remains are not enough to have been the whole crew.
____________________________________________________________Following the encounter on board the Hanspur's Luck, the expedition resumes its course. The next morning, Lady Riverbane anchors her ship and leads the party ashore. She gives you a very simple map to lead the you to the place where they ran into trouble.
"Me an' the crew will stay behind whilst ye go on ahead. We'll ensure that the boat doesn’t fall to brigands or abominations." (This is, actually, kind of reasonable.)
The journey from the shores of the Sellen River to the location marked on Riverbane's map takes four hours at normal walking speed. The forest here is ancient. Dense masses of leafage impose an eerie twilight of dark green while forlorn trees speak of a bygone age where humans wrestled for survival in a land of darkness. Many thick sheets of giant webbing stretch like great shrouds around the gaunt trees and groveling bushes.
Desh Greyskin

Desh is comfortable to once again scout ahead for the group ... this time into the eery forest, setting a demanding pace with his long strides as he watches both the ground for tracks to indicate the Marquis's men's passage as well as threats from among the ancient trees.

Aw, crap. Sorry guys.
Everyone is, apparently, so paranoid about spiders and webs, that they fail to notice the pit trap below. (Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5) You all fall ten feet down and take 5 HP of damage.

Covered in gooey webbing, the broken corpse of one of the Black Marquis' men lies at the bottom of this pit.

Eventually, you all climb out. (Presumably also healing before you continue. Feel free to roll wand charges or channels.)
As you venture deeper into the maze, the you spot a few more dead bodies hanging upside-down in giant spider webs—all members of the ill-fated expedition.
Navigating these labyrinthine paths isn't a simple task!
