Luisila:
Thanx for your ideas, but this will be a pretty snobby party. Such tavern flavored sport will be looked down upon.

OK, it looks like everybody is ready for the ball. I will probably make a longer in game post tomorrow. If there is anything you want to do/change before then, have at it.

Can you give us a cost on a reliable carriage and driver with maybe an additional guard?

Dark Archive

According to the CRB, and a little math:

1 sp/ hour for the carriage
3 sp /day for a trained hireling, thus warrior to be the guard.

Yes, those are silver pieces.

If somebody wants to point me in a different direction, I'm all ears.

Omrax would at least detect evil on the hirelings, and would be willing to pay 2-5x for someone with pathfinder or temple references.

GM Neb:
Do you mind me asking you how you adjudicate Scorpion Whips?

The mechanics seems contentious on the forum and I don’t want to hurt the party by wasting an action in combat trying to do something I can’t.

Do you mind if I summarise my understanding and you tell me where I’m mistaken?

1. Proficient with whips = proficient with scorpion whip
2. Melee weapon with 15’ reach, does lethal slashing damage.
3. Provokes an AoO like a ranged weapon when used
4. Can use on an opponent at 5’, 10’ or 15’ range, but only threatens (AoO) at 5’
5. Ultimate Equipment shows none of the CMB stuff that the Core Rule Book whip has, so I assume you can’t do combat maneuvres with the scorpion whip.

Dark Archive

Luisila:

OK, after reading and re-reading Ultimate Equipment, I came to this conclusion.

1., 2., & 3. are correct

4. You never threaten with a whip. "The whip is treated as a melee weapon with a 15-foot reach, though you don’t threaten the area into which you can make an attack." This is why there is a feat chain that takes care of this in Ultimate Combat.

5. If you are proficient with Whip, then you get Reach, Disarm, Trip, & Performance when using a scorpion whip.

"If you are proficient with whips, you can use a scorpion whip as a whip."

I take that you get all the benefits that come with a whip. I'm still fuzzy if they mean Reach as in normal 10' reach or the special Whip 15' reach, but I'm going with 15' since I'm in the same boat as you =v).

CL = Caster level

Quote:
If the user meets all the requirements noted above, and her caster level is at least equal to the spell's caster level, she can automatically activate the spell without a check. If she meets all three requirements but her own caster level is lower than the scroll spell's caster level, then she has to make a caster level check (DC = scroll's caster level + 1) to cast the spell successfully. If she fails, she must make a DC 5 Wisdom check to avoid a scroll mishap. A natural roll of 1 always fails, whatever the modifiers.

The DC was 4, so don't roll a 1 and you are good. I went ahead and rolled it and you succeeded. =v)

GM Neb:
I’ve got a question about PFS this time.

If I play a “live” First Steps 1 game in the next week or so with a pre-gen, the “4.3 Guide to Organized Play” states you apply the “credit” to a newly created (first level obviously) character.

I interpret that as meaning I could NOT apply that credit to Luisila once Black Waters is finished? (Assuming she survives of course).

Is that correct?

For some reason, I did not think you could switch pictures after 5 or10 posts. It is a nice touch when playing different Npc's as a gm. Only down side is that it is a global change everywhere you posted.

You can't change your name after 10 posts, but you can change pictures.

It is global, but I only run one other game. They can deal. Of course, you'll then have to deal when I change the picture for that game =v)

GM Neb:
Played Silent Tide in a group of 4 with an experienced GM. Balanced party with one of the players quite experienced. Very enjoyable game – though we defeated the combat encounters pretty easily and finished the game in under 3 hours.

Also played Season 3 – Tide of Twilight in a group of 6 pretty new players with NO Tank and a “nice” GM. Pretty grindy scenario and I’m positive the GM softballed one of the middle trap/ambush encounters to save a few lives. BBEG encounter was quite good though – good tactics and a bit of (real this time) luck saw us through.

Couple of things I found interesting … 2 guys of about my age on one table, said they transferred from 4E to Pathfinder 18 months ago and have been playing Runelords as a home game … had never heard about the take 10 rule … they were also confused about firing into melee + soft cover penalties … they almost got into a fight with the GM about the TWO penalties (“but I’ve got Precise Shot”)

Cleric Travel Domain seems very strong.

Rogues as a class seem to be criticised a lot on the paizo boards. The ones I saw were played well and were quite effective in combat.

I think Ezrek's players are in good hands, but I fear he may have jumped into the deep end with both feet by running two groups as a virgin PbP GM. =v) Of course my friend's first time was with 2 chicks and he turned out all right =vO.

I have run/played in all the First steps & Godsmouth Heresy. I have some personal reservations about the First Step series, but I don't want to put a damper on those here running it.

I've spied on both Omrax & Ezrek's game and I have map envy. Mine are basic yes, but I can post & update almost anywhere =v)

Godsmouth Heresy is a good little dungeon crawl, but don't run it with all freshly made 1st level PCs. Under PFS rules, you don't level half way through the module and it could be a TPK time in certain spots.

I'll be happy to expand more on either subject in spoilers as not ruin it for anybody else if people are interested in my take.

What do you mean was worried? I am STILL pretty frightened of a critical hit on Haraldir or myself.

Filios’ +7 to hit helped reassure me a bit and both his and my ACs are quite good. Still not critical-proof though!

My plan next round (depending on what Filios did) was to move to R14 and flank the thing while letting the archers have a go without soft cover penalties.

It’s interesting that the old clichés about ‘holding your nerve’ and ‘attack being the best form of defense’ SEEM to work well (in the admittedly few cases I’ve seen so far) in this gaming system.

I have this image of your character holding the end of a rope drooping in the water, the look on his face implying, “What just happened?”

Ezrek, why did you choose the handle ‘Tektite’ in the games you’re GMing?

Master GM, are you going to allow the taking of 20 while searching for traps? Also did you note that Ezrek has left one extract open, allowing the mixing of whatever may be needed?

Dark Archive

The great and powerful GM rises from his slumber in the totem of a large, shaggy bear. His tired eyes look around before answering the questions.

Taking 20 while searching for traps is an excellent idea and recommended. Keep in mind, such an action will take 1 minute (10 rounds) to complete.

In the olden days of 3.x, one would only be able to Search within 10' of a 5x5' square at a time (or something like that). I am unable to discover such a restriction on a Perception check, therefore I would say Perception checks are good for line of sight. Keep in mind that there are modifiers to the DC depending on distance, concealment, etc, etc. If somebody is aware of a different ruling, please enlighten us.

I did see that Ezrek left an extract open. He may indeed mix up an extract that he has the formula for. Remember, it does take 1 minute to mix an extract.

Now excuse me, chicken & aliens await.
