Brother Tophor

"I think I have an option." Tophor says, digging silk rope and a grappling arrow from his pack.
60ft. is twice the range increment, but that shouldn't be an issue. I'm not sure of the DC, but I'll give it a shot. Can I have that Guidance now, Selena?
Handing one end of the rope to Jal, the monk ties the other end to the special arrow. Sighting the target, he hefts the barbed projectile, testing the weight. Setting it to string, he draws the bow and lets fly.
Mwk Composite Longbow +2, Precise Shot, Grappling Arrow, 2x range, Guidance: 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 7 - 2 + 1 = 23

Jal nods to Brother Tophor, "Good call." He pulls a duplicate length of silk rope from his own pack. "You'll need both to cover the gap."
As the archer begins prepping the ropes and arrow, Jal steps to the edge of the ravine and looks down, "Thats still a long way to fall, though." He looks back at the group, chewing on the problem for a few moments.
"Anybody got two more lengths of rope? I got a plan." He points to Brother Tophor, "Shoot the arrow. We'll tie two lengths around your waist and hold this end while you use the climber kit to shimmy across." He points at himself and Xien, "Then either me or the big guy goes next ... same plan."
"Once two are on that side, we can switch to something safer. The good brother (Tophor) can keep watch while the big guy and I tie all four of the rope lengths end-to-end with a loop in the middle. We tie this end of the now long-ass rope around one of these trees, and then we can use the loop as a seat to ferry folks across one at a time."
He grins, "Bit more work, but should be safer than asking everyone to shimmy across that rope with a 100 foot drop below them."
Did that make sense?
We duplicate this for either Jal or Xien, while the other holds the belleigh (sp?) line. Jal is likely the better candidate because—while not as strong—he's lighter and a better climber.
Once two are across, we switch tactics.
Tie all 4 lengths of rope end-to-end, then tie a loop in the middle (this will be the seat). Tie each end of this mega-rope on either side of the ravine, then Xien and Jal can pass the "seat" back and forth, ferrying people so they don't have to make Climb checks and risk falling.
Thoughts? Improvements?
"Unless someone has something better?"

"I cannot pass anyone through the Void for that great a distance, Jal, only halfway...and I don't think we'd want to do halfway."
Shungur squints at the chasm. "Once I am across, though, if anyone slips, I can rescue them in time."

Yes, you can purchase baskets. They will be somewhat cumbersome to carry though. The Krihirik are not the best crafters in the world, but for 5gp you can purchase a basket, there are as many as you want. Each basket will give a +2 to any check to avoid hurting an egg. You won't be able to fit them into backpacks though, they will need to be carried. Let me know how many of you want them.
It is not clear whether the extra footprints were part of the same group or not.
The Ravine matches the area that Grippli described as where you would find the eggs. Going down rather than across is where the team has to head. It looks like it is almost one hundred feet down. Not a difficult climb...if you have enough rope. Avoiding touching the monkey tree will be a little harder...
Yeah, sorry about that, the scenario description doesn't make it clear in the text, but you need to go down. Nice plans for getting across though.
Jal Vaduva
|
:/
"At least that's what I'd say if we needed to get across." Jal shrugs, "As it is, knot the rope, drop the rope, lower everyone and I'll climb down last ... driving in pitons to help us get back up when we're done?"
I'd like to avoid those branches/roots if at al possible. does that modify our plan or DC's at all?
Oh, and I'l take a frog-man basket.
EDIT: sheesh ... nvm. I don't even have 5g.
GM Aerondor

Spent it all on booze? Just be clear when you are climbing down you are trying to avoid the monkey tree. It does make the climb harder though.
Xien
|
Xien removes his breastplate as the others start their descend and loads it into Eidi.
The nagaji starts then his descend very carefully, helping himself with the rope and his climbing tools.
Climb: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Once below he calls his lizard mount to his position. The creature carefully goes down helping itself to balance with its tail, and snapping to the slope through its four strong legs.
Climb: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Once down, he wears his armor again while the last ones arrive.
Jal Vaduva
|
Jal shrugs, "I'm sure we can lower you down. We'll run the rope around one of these trees." He does just that, then ties the elf onto the rope and nods for Tophor to help him securely lower the elf to the ravine floor.
Do you need a check for that? Im guessing Glandaro would still need to push himself out of the way of the monkey tree roots or whatever to avoid getting all stinkified, but this would keep him from falling on a bad Climb check.
And we can pretty much do this until it's just Jal and Tophor at the top ... at which point. I guess Jal will go last.
GM Aerondor
|
That sounds reasonable... if you have enough rope. Still need the climb checks to avoid the tree though.
Misforstått
|
I would like to buy one basket, please.
Did my knowledge nature check identify nearby resources that we could use to mitigate the stinky tree? Perhaps wrapping our boots with broad leaves, identifying what types of structures to hold onto, etc?
May I guide my fellow climbers as an aid another action to tell them when they're about to encounter a stinky tree root or whatever? If so, what would you like me to roll? Knowledge nature? Perception? Survival?

Shungur takes off his breastplate and ties it to his gear, then taps himself for Guidance.
Climb: 1d20 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 + 1 = 17
His owl appears unruffled as usual, but does take a moment to flap silently.

Xien - hits the tree
Selena - tree
Jal - fine
Shungur - fine
Galandaro - fine
Tophor: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
mis: 1d20 ⇒ 15
Identification of the hazard is the only real way to contribute to avoiding the monkey tree here, unless you are flying or levitating/feather falling etc down the cliff. That said, Mis does know it is only leather and skin type substances that cause the smell. Most of you have a fair about of leather and skin on you though (backpacks, boots, gloves etc). To keep things moving I'm going to make climb rolls for those who have not yet. If Tophor or Mis have a special ability you would have used let me know and I'll see it gets used instead.
Everyone gets down okay, although Xien, Selena Tophor and Misforstat all find themselves unable to avoid the monkey tree and giving off a strong smell.
Fallen trees, rocky streams, hanging vines, and other obstacles litter the ravine floor, making travel through this area just as difficult despite the sparser foliage. After several hundred feet, the terrain gives way to a natural trail running through the middle of the ravine.
In most places the trail is a mere five feet wide, though it widens to fifteen or even twenty feet in some areas. The ravine walls and the distant canopy still block out most of the natural light along the path.
Where the path narrows again, a humanoid corpse—one hand stuck in its vest as though desperately trying to reach for something—lies sprawled in the dirt next to a thick, thorny plant. Countless biting ants swarm over the corpse, making its features difficult to discern.

Um. My character is a bit of a goofball. Rather than climbing, he would rather try to jump to avoid the stinky tree. If that's OK with you, GM, he will:
(1) Acrobatics to mitigate the first 10 feet of the fall: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12 (Nope!)
(2) See you at the bottoooommmm: 6d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 6, 4, 5, 1) = 21 (Whee!)
(3) CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8, CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7, CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 (Decrementing three charges from my wand.)
"Ouch! My perineum!" Misforstått dusts himself off as he stands up and attends to his wounds. "Friends! I found a quick way down! I bet we could sell rides like that. I think I just found inspiration for my new mutagen!" The tiefling wags his tail happily as they continue on down the trail.
For those of you who don't know me, the player: Don't worry, I probably won't do anything silly that again during this scenario. I mentioned in the recruitment thread that the alchemist likes to think outside the box and come up with unusual solutions to problems. But, I will never do anything that endangers the party.
Jal Vaduva

I thought the ravine was 100ft drop. Wouldn't that be a couple more d6's of damage from the fall? And if so, doesn't that drop you to negatives automatically given the damage you rolled so far?
Misforstått
|
My bad. The GM wrote: "The far side of the ravine is sixty feet away" I misread that as 60 feet down. I would NOT have tried to jump 100 feet. So, I guess that whole post was for nothing. Carry on... :-)
I'll just climb down and get all stinky, if that's alright, GM.
The alchemist still wags his tail as he reaches the bottom of the ravine. Sniffing his pits, he says: "Smells kind of like home! Only, more so."
Xien
|
Xien has charged Eidi with the encumbering and being a nagaji he is made of scales instead of normal humanoid tissue. Is that helping me to avoid smelling that bad? O:)
Once in the bottom Xien dresses back his breastplate and mounts back on Eidi soothing the big lizard. He also readies his trident and shield.
Unless something makes logical for him not to having those weapons readied, he is always prepared with trident and shield
On the finding of the skeleton, Xien closes by and analyse the corpse, while Eidi smells around looking for danger.
Heal: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (2) - 2 = 0
Eidi Perception (has scent): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

"I have enough vials for everyone," says Shungur, as he applies a vial to himself. He takes a moment and applies another vial to the unsuspecting Brother Tophor.

As the pathfinders make frantic preparations the ants start to swarm through the jungle towards them!
Galandaro quickly douses himself in insect repellent, while Selena calls down a blessing on the party, and most especially on Missforstaff.
Jal stands ready with a flask of acid, ready to pour it over the swarms as they approach. His drinking buddy - Tophor, seeing the hopelessness of the situation downs a quick one.
Shungur, noting the move of Galandaro does likewise, and then tosses another vial of the vile smelling stuff over Tophor as well.
Misforstatt doesn't wait, he wants the swarms dealt to and tosses a fask of acid and then retreats.
jungle catch on a 1: 1d2 ⇒ 2
His arm, guided by the the inspiring words of Selena lands the acid in the midst of the closest swarm. Bits of acid and ant go flying and the swarm loses its cohesive form.
Xien stands ready, his normal weapons put away for the moment.
Still more ants pour through the jungle towards the pathfinder team!
Remember, if you throw through the jungle, I'm going to give a 50% miss chance for each square you throw through. Only Tophor has a clear shot at the moment without moving.

"Thank you, Kind Sir Jal!" Misforstått smiles and bows low to the slayer. As he bows, the tiefling inadvertently moons the rest of the party. He is an ugly man; the moon is truly a horrible sight. In conjunction with the smell from the stinky tree, the whole effect is... unsettling... :-)
The alchemist wags his tail happily, having received a compliment from a fellow Pathfinder field agent.
