Background:
Shungur kneeled before the cloudy-eyed oracle, his sides still heaving from the exertion of the ritual trials to make it this far. Around him, other Sarkorian exiles chanted, their voices ringing into the woods that stretch all about Sevenarches. His hands steady, he offered the steaming bowl to the oracle, who tasted it and then marked Shungur with sacred patterns on his face and hands. "Accept this vessel, O Spirits," the oracle intoned, "And bring forth his guide."

The chanting ended with a hushed draw of breath as a light descended from the star filled bowl of night above them, plummeting like a meteor, and resolving into an owl with plumage that matched the stars' patterns above the small Kellid village. Amazed, Shungur held out his arm, and the owl cooly alit upon it, regarding him. "The spirits of the heavens reward you," said the oracle approvingly, then sharpened his tone. "But this place is not for you, Shungur. You are oath-bound to travel to the edge-of-sky. Go, bring us honor, and return." Shungur blinked, nearly said something in protest, then nodded, and after bowing to his parents, who attempted to maintain their steely pride, he left and walked out of the village, Sevenarches, and the River Kingdoms altogether.
