"Saul! What in tarnation is going on here?? We went to Smeeds, and found this bloody jacket, busted in, and Smeed swore to me before all the gods that he hadn't seen Larur and that you owed him a crap ton of money!"
Biggs then says a silent prayer and invokes one of the new powers Torag has granted him.
casting zone of truth
His voice booms out.
"I have been lied to by just about everyone I have met in this damned town, Saul... and I am getting fed up with all the nonsense! Now tell me what the hell is going on! Where is Larur? Why didn't Smeed know where he is? What is the deal with Clegg?"
MiniGM
Drop your spell Biggs. You work for me at my establishment. I understand you are angry because there is something terrible going on.
He looks at the bloody cloak. This is certainly Larur's. Pause Larur is dead. He drops it, he looks very upset.
Clegg is a monster, and Smeed a liar.
All of that is true
Biggs Longshaft
How does he know I cast a spell? Do people know if zone of truth is active? I figured he would just think I was praying. Biggs is always praying after all
"No offense Saul, but I don't really plan on speaking to anyone in this town without the blessings of Torag. The way I see it, if ye got nothing to hide there be no problems. People are dying, And I am getting dragged down into the mucky mucky with all the deceit. I will stand for it no longer! And if ye have a problem with it, then I shall promptly go find some new folks to talk to, and you can just send message to me when you have some orders. I'm going to go get ready to find Clegg!
MiniGM
no you have to speak the words to a spell, unless you have a feat that allows you to hide it and you know a spell is cast on you.
Biggs if you refuse to trust me then you can certainly leave my employ. I would hate to lose you but I will not have you accusing me of things, and casting spells on me. Now I am not sure what your spell does, but obviously you do not trust me. So make your choice here and now. Either you drop whatever it is, or you leave.
Biggs Longshaft
Well, I cast zone of truth to ensure I could trust him, thinking he's seemed pretty straightforward so far... but this... this makes me not trust Saul!
What could he be hiding... this is a surprise!
"Well, Saul, I figgered you would be all about guaranteeing the truth. This is sad news, but I suppose what choice do I have?"
He lowers his spell.
MiniGM
We have nothing Biggs if we cannot trust each other. That is exactly what a man like Clegg wants! He slams his key hand on the table after you both have gotten to sit for a bit and things have calmed down and there is ale in front of you both
well to be fair you have never trusted him :) Your plan is/was very good…but whether he is honest or (beating your spell- I am not telling), he does live in a town filled with lies and dishonesty
I have a feeling that we will never find Larur. Smeed is the kind of man that would do exactly what Clegg told him to do! He must be stopped. And I have an idea. But first… He takes a deep breath to steady himself I need you to take over the day to day operations. I want you to be a full partner, 25 gold a week and when I retire in a year or so I will turn the goblin over to you.
--------
Then
I have word that there is a shipment of liquor is finally arriving. It will be here early next week. It was delayed due to storms and I think Clegg will likely make a play for it. I can guarantee that he will send some of his best men there, You can hit them and take them out, and bring our stock to the goblin to improve business at the same time. Get some of Clegg's muscle out of the way and we have a chance. I know that means waiting on revenge, but LArur would rather we succeed than not I think.
Biggs Longshaft
Biggs eyes grow wide with surprise, and he feels bad about questioning his friend.
"Aye... this be a rough town. I am just sick of the lies Saul, my head spins every time I hear someone speak! I have no issue running the goblin, though I fear I will still have to continue my own business in honor to my god! But do not fear, they will not get in the way of each other."
"So what can ye tell me of this shipment? Is it our shipment, or have we become thieves? ... I am uneasy waiting to avenge Larur, but perhaps if I can smash a few skulls, it will only be easier when I go find Clegg at his areana."
Biggs will then go get drunk and full and go to bed, and then prepare himself for when the shipment arrives.
Biggs Longshaft
The next day, he will go visit the halfling, casting zone of truth before he goes to see her. Once there, he will drop 3 gold into her can.
Biggs Longshaft
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Biggs eyes the papers, but whether or not they are legit, he tells Saul that is good enough for him.
Biggs gives a slight bow,
"M'lady, it seems you are the only one I can now trust. Saul is... worrisome. He told me Larur was killed by Smeed, but Smeed had no knowledge of this. One of Saul's guards 'found' Larur's bloody cloak... but I was not there to witness this. I am sure Clegg is a bad man, even you have attested to his lies regarding Belgrin, but I fear that this double cross has been double crossed and even triple crossed! What can you tell me about my situation here? Any news around town of these things?"
"Also, regarding Saul, he has tasked me to pick up a shipment of exotic liquor coming in a few days, and is convinced Clegg's men will be there to still it. Any ideas on this, or any advice on battle at the docks?"
Biggs Longshaft
"hmm... Well since poor Nez has come down with a flu it seems, I could sure use someone to watch my back... Who is yer friend? And what doya mean by 'be honest with myself?' That is the whole problem! I am terribly confused about what to think!"
Biggs Longshaft
"Bah, more like she got fed up with ye, I reckon! Well... well met, Merrit. I suppose you had better follow me. We have a shipment of liquor to protect, and there are a few things you should probably know about our wonderful employer before we get to it. I hope you are in for a world of lies, deceit, and bloodshed, because I swear by the mighty beard of Torag this town is chalk full of all of that!"
Biggs Longshaft
Biggs will head back to the goblin to prepare for the incoming shipment. He will gives Merrit a tour of the place before introducing Saul.
"Well, this is the Goldin Goblin, finest gambling hall in Riddleport! I myself am part owner, Anezka, my friend, is also a partner, but she is elsewheres at the moment. Saul is the founder and up until the other day was the sole owner. He promoted me just recently... so I guess that makes you one of my employees now, eh?"
Biggs seems lost in thought and then he bends down to the halfling and whispers in his ear.
"You have to keep this between you and me, but something seems to be up with Saul, stories haven't been adding up, and details just seem... strange. I would be wary of him... but at the same time he has shown be nothing but kindness as far as I can tell... but we shall see, eh? Keep your head about ya."
Biggs Longshaft
DM, are those masterwork throwing axes I crafted for Larur still around? I would like to take them and engrave, RIP LARUR: MAY YOUR SPIRIT SOAR AS DO THESE AXES, along the blades. Then I want to use them to kill whoever killed him! And if/when we find Larur's remains, I would like to use his ashes to mix into the metal, so my drinking buddy will be with me forever!
Biggs Longshaft
Ah yes, I suppose I did never make them. Well, instead of craft I was planning on taking spellcraft since Nez is gone... but I do like the idea of carrying Larur around with me to kill his foes... hmm. that's a tough one.
Biggs Longshaft
Craft taken!
Biggs will spend the couple days before the shipment to build Larur's axe's (unsure how much money/materials he gave me, and what it will end up costing me to make?)
Craft: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 2 = 11
Craft: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 4 + 2 = 19
Craft: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 2 = 14
Craft: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 4 + 2 = 23
MiniGM
Are you now? Well lets find out.
He waves over a large bouncer, they clear a space in the floor and announce that there is going to be a match. Bets start pouring in, people betting heavily on the large bouncer.
Now don't go killing each other, this is a friendly match and there is healing for you both at the end.
2d20 ⇒ (20, 16) = 36
1d20 ⇒ 17 for 1d6 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 3 = 8 the man levels a huge two handed swing with his club at Merrit and it slams into his ribs
go merit
Merrit
[ooc]Since the halfling's rapier is sized for him, he shouldn't have a damage penalty. Rolling for confirmation, since the hit was in the critical range for the weapon (18-20)[ooc]
confirmation: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Biggs Longshaft
you apply your strength mod regardless of size... You only take a penalty if you use a weapon too big, in which case the penalty is separate from your mod.
Biggs Longshaft
Biggs, tired from a hard day's smithing, walks into the goblin half-way through the fight.
He runs up to the circle and shouts to Merrit:
"Come on man, don't let him beat ya! I only just met ya, and I was told ye were the real deal! Use that size to yer advantage! Roll between his legs, fight dirty! You got this my little friend!"
Biggs Longshaft
"Well perhaps he was overconfident in his guard abilities... I am sure we can find something for him? I owe a favor you see... I'm sure you know all about that eh? And besides, ain't I part owner?"
Biggs Longshaft
"Aye, but just barely... or maybe he is standing perfectly? Is it just be or does he seem almost frozen? Hmm... So Saul, when is that shipment coming in? Whether or not you hire my friend here, I shall be requiring his assistance myself, even if I must pay him out me own pocket. I trust you do not have issue with this? Oh... and I apologize for our argument the other day. I trust we can put it past us and get back to friendship and partnership?"
