Seeing how the bigger skum was shrugging off some of the spells sent his way Falina pulled out a different wand than before and used it on herself.

I cast Sure Cast on myself from the wand. +5CL for my next SR check.

RUINS OF THE LUCKY BONES--FLOODED TUNNELS (17 Desnus)

With the intruders neatly bottlenecked, the skum mage calls forward his wounded minion as it unleashes a second lightning bolt from its wand, again zapping everyone except T'chazzar and the nimble Jessibel (17 electricity damage; Ref DC 14 for half [8]). It then swims north into what initially appears to be a dead-end tunnel, leaving itself briefly open to an attack of opportunity from Caldariel. Then the wounded skum that escaped the previous battle swims forward to take its place and keep the bottleneck intact. Its trident stab attempt against Caldariel misses by a mile.

Jessibel ends her song with a flourish (IC +1 lasts for 2 more rounds, thanks to Lingering Performance) and whispers to Falina that she's backing out of the tunnel, since it seems to be a lightning bolt deathtrap.

T'CHAZZAR may take his actions from last round (though I think circumstances may have left him with nothing to do). FALINA made her save vs. last round's lightning bolt for half damage before her resistance to lightning was applied (so 5 damage total). CALDARIEL gets an AoO against the skum spellcaster, as it moved out of a threatened square.

INITIATIVE ORDER/CONDITIONS: Combat Rounds 2 & 3 (Bolded may act/post)

Yeah. If you have your PC delay (and unless the dice roller curses him), I figure Caldariel can kill the wounded skum blocking the passage and break the logjam.

With the other creature attacking him, he was barely able to get to his feet, dodge it's attack, and get in a single counter punch. While the exchange could have gone better, it was also true that it could have gone much worse.

Caldariel can't connect as the skum spellcaster swims away, but when his wounded replacement takes his place, the elf-tiefling swiftly bashes in its skull.

This leaves you with a move action; want to chase (slowly) on foot? Might get you another AoO when the caster tries to open any secret door that may or may not be at the end of the short northern tunnel.

I, too, totally forgot about your resistance to electricity (which is kinda weird, since I eventually remembered it for Falina). Lessened damage is already recorded in my notes and will be reflected in the next full update.

FALINA, T'CHAZZAR, and ARANI still up.

You can choose to take a move action after seeing how your first attack turned out. See the spoiler below.

PFRPG Core Rulebook, p. 187:

Under the "Full Attack" section is the following bit:
Deciding between an Attack or a Full Attack: After your first attack, you can decide to take a move action instead of making your remaining attacks, depending on how the first attack turns out and assuming you have not already taken a move action this round. If you’ve already taken a 5-foot step, you can’t use your move action to move any distance, but you could still use a different kind of move action.

RUINS OF THE LUCKY BONES--FLOODED TUNNELS (17 Desnus)

Despite Caldariel finishing off the previously wounded skum underling, it's becoming painfully obvious that your party is at a grave disadvantage against opponents with a natural swimming ability. The skum spellcaster leaves itself open again to attack from Caldariel as it opens a secret door at the end of the northbound side tunnel; a moment later it's gone, having swum east. (Though no one else witnesses it, it comes to the submerged docks chamber, finding Jessibel alone and seemingly quite vulnerable. It stops a few feet north of the bard, pondering its next move.)

Falina again manages to avoid the worst of the lightning bolt (unlike Arani), taking negligible damage (3 hps) thanks to her natural resistance to electricity. Unfortunately, her movement is too slow to be able to also cast a spell at the skum caster. (On the positive side, she's still got that spell slot in reserve.)

SILVER RAVENS are all up!

Caldariel reaches out and manages to briefly make strong contact with the fleeing skum's left leg. For an instant it appears to be vulnerable (i.e.--off-balance), but the aquatic beastie is such a strong swimmer that it recovers immediately and continues to swim to the east. Arani reaches the secret door and moves through it, as the skum spellcaster never bothered to close it.

I moved Arani's token an extra square north; I believe that's where she would've gotten with a double move (at half speed underwater). I had to dig into Aquatic Adventures to find the rules for tripping underwater. Since things tend to float underwater, a successful trip doesn't knock the target prone, but instead puts it off-balance. The trip victim can make a Swim check as part of its movement (with a DC equal to the trip attack roll) to regain its equilibrium and continue moving. Unfortunately, aquatic creatures with a natural swim speed gain a +8 bonus on Swim checks, plus this guy had several skill points sunk into Swim as well.

RUINS OF THE LUCKY BONES--FLOODED TUNNELS (17 Desnus)

FALINA and T'CHAZZAR can take 2 rounds' worth of actions this turn.

The skum caster sizes up Jessibel, trying to determine if a spell or attack will serve it best against the lone bard. In the end, it opts to imbue its teeth and claws with magical energy, swim closer, and trying to rip Jessi apart. The bard manages to dodge the thing's bite and first claw, but the second claw rips deeply into her shoulder, and blood begins to cloud the water nearby (9 points damage).

The bard instinctively counterattacks, the tip of her blade connecting slightly with the real spellcaster and not one of its mirror images, and a trickle of skum blood joins Jessibel's own in the water.

Arani's shot misses the skum spellcaster, but it comes close enough that it eliminates one of its mirror images (leaving two false images active). The other members of the party move to engage the creature again.

The skum decides to stand and fight (for the moment, at least). Its teeth and one of its claws find Caldariel's flesh, further wounding the elf-tiefling (2 hits; 17 damage total). Then the creature (and its two remaining mirror images) effortlessly swims five feet away from Caldariel and Jessibel to put some distance between itself and its foes. The bard casts a healing spell to undo the damage just inflicted upon Caldariel (17 hp healed, so it's a wash between damage and subsequent healing) and then moves a bit to keep the pressure on the skum.

That was the previous round. And, RAW, it looks like trying to swim simply for its rate of speed is worthless (unless you have an actual swim speed): you can automatically move at half speed along the bottom whereas you need to make a successful Swim check to move half that again (one-quarter your speed as a move action, one-half as a full action). Not sure that's realistic, but it seems to be RAW.

With enemies closing in on it, the skum spellcaster (with its lone remaining mirror image) again executes a five-foot swim to give itself some distance, positioning itself under the dock before casting another spell. Jessibel pursues, but her stab attempt doesn't come close enough to even pop the last fake caster. The bard continues to inspire courage, however.

Everyone except ARANI (just out of range) must succeed on a DC 17 Will save. If you fail, read the spoiler below for the effect(s).

Spellcraft DC 18 (To ID Spell Just Cast):

It cast slow.

Failed DC 17 Will Save:

Your character is drastically slowed. A creature affected by this spell is staggered and can take only a single move action or standard action each turn, but not both (nor may it take full-round actions). Additionally, it takes a –1 penalty on attack rolls, AC, and Reflex saves. A slowed creature moves at half its normal speed (round down to the next 5-foot increment), which affects the creature’s jumping distance as normal for decreased speed.

Unaffected by whatever spell seems to have a hold of Caldriel at the least, Arani fires off another shot, this time watching the last of the skum's images flicker out as the bolt passes through it.

RUINS OF THE LUCKY BONES--FLOODED TUNNELS (17 Desnus)

The skum caster's latest spell slows Caldariel to a crawl. The fish-man flashes a toothy grin that turns to a grimace an instant later when T'chazzar's blade clips his flesh and then Arani's wayward bolt eliminates his last mirror image. Falina fires a single magic missile from her wand at the monster and isn't particularly surprised when it fails to penetrate an invisible shield spell protecting their foe. She alerts the others to the spell's presence and plots her own next move.

The caster repeats its super-annoying 5-foot swim to again put some room between itself and its foes, then casts a spell that fills a 10-foot-radius sphere of water with sparkling gold particles that coat Caldariel, T'chazzar, and Jessibel and threaten to get in their eyes to blind them! (Will DC 16 or gain blinded condition for at least the current round; no SR applies. If you fail, you may repeat the save at the end of your character's turn.)

Indeed, Jessibel immediately gives a cry but then regains her composure and continues her inspirational song. Having recognized the spell that's affected Caldariel, she tells him that she can't see to attack but can still use her healing wand on him...if he can come toward her voice.

Since I forgot about T'CHAZZAR's SR (Again!!), I used his first roll for his attack instead. I also botted Falina for this round to let her know that magic missiles won't be a part of the solution here, as the skum caster has shield up and running. I figure better to use a charge from a one-missile wand for that bit of knowledge than to waste a spell otherwise.

ALL SILVER RAVENS are up!

RUINS OF THE LUCKY BONES--FLOODED TUNNELS (17 Desnus)

T'chazzar fights off the potential blindness of the skum's latest magical attack, but the now-golden drow's still unable to connect with his retaliatory strike. Meanwhile, Falina sashays across the cavern floor like some slow-motion model, positioning herself for a potential spell strike against the opposing spellcaster.

Again the skum swims just far enough away to allow itself to cast another spell. Its form shimmers briefly, but that's the only visual effect from the casting. The thing's toothy maw opens and it glubs a few taunting words at your party.

Infernal:

"Are you the Silver Ravens? I am unimpressed."

Spellcraft DC 18 (To ID Spell Just Cast):

The skum caster just added a displacement spell to its defenses. Oh joy....

Jessibel takes Caldariel's advice to heart...but not into her brain. The bard bottom-walks north of the skum, but at the last moment drops her rapier and tries to grapple the thing! It's a brave thing to try, but the skum isn't truly unarmed. It bites Jessi in the neck as she goes for the grapple, and her blood further clouds the water (9 damage); as a result, she's unable to get a hold on the creature.

"It's got a displacement spell on it now!" she gasps through the pain.

Yeah. I figure his best bet would be what used to be called a partial charge, but even that's almost impossible in this fight with all its requirements (need to move at least 10 feet, in a straight line, shortest route to target, etc.).

Also, given my ruling that walking underwater is the equivalent of difficult terrain (like moving in a bog), T'chazzar can't do a 5-foot step/full attack combo. But I used his second hit for his AoO (see next post).

RUINS OF THE LUCKY BONES--FLOODED TUNNELS (17 Desnus)

After Arani's bolt comes close and T'chazzar scores a decent hit with one of his blades, the skum caster decides it needs to put some distance between itself and the adventurers. T'chazzar scores a second hit on the fleeing sorcerer despite its displacement spell, and Caldariel sees an opening (AoO) as your foe swims back west, then up toward the ceiling, then north--the way you entered the flooded tunnels.

The pink dotted line shows its intended path.

This might be a good place to reassess. If the party wants to leave to get some magic that'll enable them to swim (and thus fight better underwater) and then return, that's on the table. It could also pursue, explore the west and/or east tunnels, wait for the slow effect on Caldariel to expire while Jessibel cleans off the glitterdust particles with a prestidigitation spell, or something else. Give me your vote!

And hopefully Falina will be back online to rejoin us sooner rather than later.

Still slowed (but no longer blinded; Caldariel threw that off a couple posts back) the elf-tiefling's unable to deliver a successful strike as the skum caster again swims away. Gritting his teeth, Caldariel begins a slow pursuit.

"At this point, he's clearly outrunning us, and if there are others here' we're likely being led into a trap." Arani says, moving toward the others.
