Madness in Kintargo (Inactive)

Game Master Profession Smith 6 ranks

As the new Lord-Mayor Barzillai Thrune brutally imposes his will upon the city of Kintargo, his actions stir the embers of rebellion and a nearly-forgotten organization called the Silver Ravens rises from the ashes.

Faced with a lone thug Dekamund takes a less subtle approach than he would typically and brings his morning star to bear;

"Lickspittle?" Dom silently mouths the word to himself. The gang must've made a new friend while I was out of town, I guess. At the thought of his pursuit of Scarplume, Dom remembers Garrik's dying screams, and rapidly shoves those memories back down as hard as he can.

RUST GATE (21 Gozran)

Falina launches another of her potent acid arrows at the dottari archer, recognizing him from the recent doghousing rescue.

Dekamund's insult literally falls upon deaf ears. "What?!" the Queensman screams, apparently realizing he's been insulted in some way, but a moment later he cries "Oof!" as the 'wizard' bashes him with a morningstar.

DAVINA still up.

I've updated my offline tracker for the additional healing from Dekamund's second positive energy channel. Pretty sure I added the healing into Davina and Arani's hp totals but somehow missed the healer himself.

RUST GATE (21 Gozran)

Davina decides that she's a bit overmatched by her opponent and decides to go total defense for the moment, fairly certain that Dom or the lictor will be able to eventually turn their blades on her foe. The decision proves prudent, as she's just able to deflect an incoming sword strike.

Arani's foe takes a moment to rip out the thistle arrow (3 points damage), takes a quick step, and again fires, this time missing his fellow archer. The helpful stranger sidesteps a strike from the deafened Queensman. The other remaining Queensman, bleeding heavily, withdraws from combat leaving T'chazzar to engage another enemy or follow and go for the kill. Lictor Octavio is clipped again but leaves his dottari opponent disabled with a strike from his blade. Dom takes his first wound of the fight (9 points slashing damage).

Arani puts a pair of arrows deep into the dottari archer's core; he falls with a thud and is unlikely to ever get up again. Dom's words are wasted on the deafened gate guard, but the cut of his falcata speaks volumes. The dottari survives the strike but starts looking for an escape route.

RUST GATE (21 Gozran)

Having to target a new foe helps to cause Falina's latest acid arrow to miss the mark, but T'chazzar flanks and promptly drops the dottari fighting Octavio.

Seeing the battle lost, one of the two surviving dottari orders a retreat. His two deafened allies can't hear the order but get the idea as the man withdraws to the north. DAVINA gets an AoO on DS3 if she wants it.

Octavio starts heading for the narrow alleys to the west, the Tooth and Nail his likely destination...but he doesn't make decisions for your group.

What now? Head back to the Tooth and Nail? Maybe speak with the fellow who helped thwart the ambush? Take time to try to loot the fallen dottari and Queensmen? Pursue those escaping? Your call!

RUST GATE (21 Gozran)

Arani's parting shot drops the fleeing swordsman; his allies don't give a damn and keep retreating, some calling out for reinforcements. No help is immediately forthcoming, however.

While Octavio and Davina lead an escape through the narrow alleys to the northwest, Dom takes some extra time to loot the nearest fallen dottari, snagging his longsword, longbow, manacles, and a surprisingly heavy belt pouch (see spoiler below for loot list). Though you hear occasional whistles and distant cries, you all make it to the Tooth and Nail tavern without incident. There, Lictor Octavio is reunited with his rescued armigers. Its safety also gives you all a chance to thank and speak with the cloaked fellow who ruined the ambush at the Rust Gate.

"Well, this is a happy little gathering," Octavio says as he claps his armigers and cousin Setrona on the back, "but rather a crowded one. You good people can't operate a true rebellion out of my cousin's tiny tavern, so I have a lead for you: Try exploring the ruins of the Lucky Bones a few blocks southwest of here."

“The Lucky Bones was, to the public, a gambling hall and opium den. In truth, the building was a front for a guild of thieves and abductors known as the Gray Spiders. When my order learned the Gray Spiders were involved in a kidnapping and slavery ring tied to the cult of Norgorber, we confronted them. They responded by assassinating Lictor Reya, our founder who brought down the corrupted Silver Raven called Brakisi. In turn, we brought the full might of the Order of the Torrent down on them, and when we were done, the Gray Spiders were no more."

"But then Lictor Reya’s successor, Lictor Yehl, made the curious choice to seal the Lucky Bones rather than fully explore it. It was shortly afterward that others in the order discovered that Yehl and some of his subordinates had sought to preserve the Gray Spiders’ ill-gotten gains for themselves and had planned to return to the complex to loot it. Yehl and the others were charged with corruption and expelled, and command of the Torrent passed to Lictor Arcamo Hyrmagus, but no one ever followed up with the Lucky Bones. Lictor Arcamo was ashamed of the entire episode and forbade any of the rest of us from investigating it, and in time, it all mercifully slipped from memory. But those chambers still exist below the ruined gambling hall--chambers that were never mapped or officially reported. For all intents and purposes, they do not exist. Sounds to me to be the perfect place for a rebellion to set up shop...provided someone first scouts the place out to ensure nothing unwanted has moved in!”

Once everyone has reconvened in the Tooth and Nail, Domitius listens to the Lictor’s suggestion. "Makes sense I guess," he concedes. Turning to his friends, Dom asks, "Do we have any idea what happened there? How did they know to try and ambush us at the gate?" Finally, Dom's gaze falls on the newcomer, a slight frown as it does. "And what was your interest in all this? Not that we’re not grateful, but how did you come to attack our attackers?"

Falina:
When Dom has a moment to approach her quietly, he goes over to Falina. "That got a little more exciting than I like things to get," he says, with his face briefly turning to a scowl as he goes over things in his mind. "There was a moment when I thought those two fellows were going to rough you up. I admit I don’t know what they teach in sorcery school, but if a guy gets up in your face like that, do you have any sort of, um, option, I guess, for how to handle him?"

Your mysterious ally first bows, before speaking in a soft, yet eloquent tone;

"Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my most consummate pleasure to make your collective acquaintance, and provide aid in stymieing the tyrannical ambush. Tsk-tsk. I forget my manners..."

THE TOOTH AND NAIL TAVERN

Arani detects no pursuers nor anyone taking an unusual amount of interest in the party. Inside, after Dekamund makes his introductions, Octavio tries to answer Dom's questions.

"Tombus Regegious is the patron of that family, once a lesser noble house. Their main claim to fame was that an ancestor was Kintargo's very first lord-mayor. Nowadays, the Regegiouses are a bunch of fanatical loyalists to the Thrunes. Tombus is leader of the Chelish Citizens Group--or Queensmen, as some call them. I hear his daughters have been trained as his own personal lieutenants to the cause."

"As for the Gray Spiders, I believe that's just the name the scoundrels chose for themselves. You know--spinners of webs, users of poison, able to get into almost any home or business. I don't recall them having any links to real spiders, normal or giant. Then again, there's no telling what might've crept into the ruins of the Lucky Bones since its fall those many years ago...."

BASEMENT OF THE TOOTH AND NAIL

Looking back, I don't think I mentioned that your group is all in the basement of the Tooth and Nail, where the rescued armigers have been staying and where you've got some privacy from prying eyes and sharp ears. Also, forgot to report that Dom and Arani's Knowledge checks failed to gain any insights.

The lictor grimaces a bit at Dom's question. "Honestly, I have no idea how my predecessors sealed the ruins off, and all our records were lost when our order was outlawed by Thrune. You might have to use the time-tested methods of sharp eyes and a bit of elbow grease to uncover the entrance."

Setrona scampers back into the cellar; it’s apparent that something has upset the short proprietor.

”There’s a woman of Tian descent up in the common room, asking questions about the Vashnarstill twins, a couple of young nobles who occasionally frequent my establishment. Seems they’ve recently gone missing. What’s worse—the names of your friends Jessibel and Leora have come up. The lads approached me three days back about renting out the Tooth and Nail for a private birthday party. Apparently, they went missing between here and their villa in the Greens.”

Lowering her voice, the woman adds, ”I don’t know if any of you want to speak to this woman yourselves, or if you want to observe her a bit before she leaves.”

Dekamund: If you'd like, roll a couple of Knowledge checks (nobility for Jessibel and/or the Vashnarstill twins, local or religion for Leora) for possible prior knowledge of those two Silver Ravens.

And as I'd been assembling this idea, I'd kind of figured you for Outside as you have one of the higher (if not the highest) Stealth ratings we've got.

Falina listened to what the Lichtor had to say about the proposed base. It was an interesting proposition and she felt that he was on to something. The mention of the fate of the founder of his order brought only a slight smile to her lips, the tiniest of indications, but she still felt a bit sorry about the situation. The founder did a favor to everyone in taking out the kidnapper.

"I think that location would be a good one for our purposes as long as we can clear it out at least." She paused a moment as she tried to recall anything she might have heard of the place.

While her mind percolated on information about the Lucky Bones she turned her gaze to Dekamund. He was an interesting one, and he wasn't wrong that more than just them were involved in this fight. She remembered that before several groups had to be united in order to make the Silver Ravens a real threat to Thrune.

"I think that Dekamund is potentially useful, and I believe we should also try to find other groups that are doing what we are and try to bring them into the fold. The original ravens were not just one group but several that merged together to accomplish as much as we did." Falina looked to the group, "Of course we have to find them first."

When word came about the ten woman asking about the Vashnarstill twins, Leora, and Jessi Falina felt a wash of worry come over her. As they spoke of two teams she said, "I will go talk to her, good thing I haven't shifted back yet."

Dom nods at Falina. "Reasonable. What if I go with you? Then Arani, you pick up our visitor after she leaves here. Sudarynya, maybe change up your look quickly, and the two of you can assist each other on the tail?"

Just a suggestion, as Davina also has a double-digit Stealth rating, and can whip up a Disguise on the quick as part of her Archetype.

Dom turns to T'chazzar and Dekamund. "What about you two, go with one of those options, or cover some other contingency I haven't thought of?"

Meeting the Ravens

Dekumund accepts Arani's hand and reciprocates with a hand-kiss;

"Peace, Love, Health, and Life to you too Mistress Thorn. I have heard great things indeed..."

He smiles, then replies to Dom;

"Alas parlour tricks are not my forte... More maintaining the illusion of arcane abilities... This mummery helps to disguise my faith and the powers it bestows me..."

As talk turns to the Tian woman and her quest(ions) regarding the Vashnarstill twins, Jessibel and Leora, the half-elven dandy pauses in thought;

"Jessibel Aulamaxa... a young noblewoman and fledgling bard of some talent I believe? Your other friend Leora Scileana's name is also familiar... she was for all in tense and purposes an alchemist yes? As I mentioned my Argent Ravens, it is my business to be informed, and whilst your enemies would seek to gather such facts about you all, know too those who would call you allies do the same..."

Dekamund chuckles softly with a theatrical at Falina statementshe may be of use;

"A most appreciated accreditation Mistress Falina. I do indeed have my uses. Given the choice, assisting in engaging our curious Tian in conversation would be my preferred role in this play... I have had quite enough exercise for one day!"

Falina gave Dekamund a bit of a smile and said, "Quite the flatterer aren't you Dekamund. Fortunately you are good with words so you may be of help." TOOTH AND NAIL MAIN ROOM (21 Gozran)

The mystery woman is currently standing at a corner table, speaking to a pair of laborers—one human, one a dwarf. She speaks to the dwarf in his own language. The woman’s not a full-blooded Tian, but she has enough of that ethnicity’s features to be recognizable as having blood ties to that distant land. She wears high-end studded leather armor and is armed with a rapier. Her face is notable, both for its fine Tian features and some accessories worn: Her right ear and nostril both bear rings, and a fine mithral chain dangles between the two anchor points. Also, a pair of goggles is currently raised above her forehead, pushed up to the edge of her short, chaotic hairstyle.

Setrona’s back at the bar, quietly chatting with another notable woman you’ve seen in the Tooth and Nail before. Initially looking a bit like a pirate, this dark-haired woman has an eyepatch over her left eye. The pirate look is belied, however, by the flour-coated apron and oven mitts she wears.

”I’m not sure if I’ve properly introduced her yet,” Setrona says, ”but this is Luculla. She runs the bakery and confectionary shop at the other end of this building.”

The woman gives a quick smile, waving an oven mitt. ”Yes—the Sweet Tooth. Nice to meet you,” she says in a soft voice. ”I’m afraid I brought up your friends’ names to that investigator,” she adds with an apologetic gaze toward Setrona. ”I met Jessibel and Leora several weeks back, when they came to the tavern with the Vashnarstill twins. Such fine young people, your friends and the Vashnarstills both; no pretentiousness or airs of being better than the common folk. Anyhow, I met briefly with the twins after they’d spoken to Setrona about their birthday plans. They mentioned that things had rather fallen off between them and your lady friends, and they were hoping to rekindle their romances at their birthday party. Phenio mentioned that he’d learned that Jessibel was currently out of town, and Angus asked if I knew where Leora might be found, but I had no idea. They bought a dozen of my candied blackberry tarts—probably to give to Leora once they found her—and that was the last I saw of the poor lads. I think they were planning on tracking her down.”

Anyone leaving finds no sign of any dottari or Queensman patrols in the neighborhood...yet. It's getting late, though, so you might want to consider where to stay when the nightly curfew hits. (Setrona has some bedrolls for folks who opt to stay in the common room overnight.)

Dekamund or Knowledge (nobility) 20+:

The Vashnarstill twins have the same devil-may-care, spendthrift attitude as their father, Sendi. Unlike Jessibel, who's a long ways down the family tree in terms of inheriting the title of family matron, the Vashnarstill twins are first- and second-in-line to eventually succeed their father. Angus, the older by a few minutes, stands to inherit the title, with the slightly smaller Phenio next in line.

I don't have a chance in hell of making that Knowledge check, but is there any chance that Dom would know some of that information about the twins? IIRC, Sabrina and Angus were an item back in the day when I was her slave. Then again, I think you can make the case the back in that day, a lot of information that I would now presently find useful went in one ear and out the other.

Domitius smiles and nods to the baker. "Hello ma'am, I'm Domitius. Pleasure to meet you. Your shop sounds great, I'll try to make a point of getting over there as soon as things here are dealt with," he says, nodding over at the interesting-looking Tian woman. "You get any indication what her game is?"

Falina listened to Setrona long enough to pick up the Tian woman's name and then headed over towards the visitor. Her form was the same as when they left the shrine, a far cry from her real one, so she wasn't too concerned with being recognized. As she reached the woman she said quietly, "I understand you are looking for the Vashnarstill twins? Has something happened to them?"

Dom follows Falina into the main room of the tavern, giving her a few paces worth of lead space ("bodyguard distances," far enough back to offer her personal space, close to intervene if needed). It's your show, Falina, I'm just the backup here, he thinks to himself.

Did the Tian woman's name actually get mentioned yet? I don't see it up there. EDIT: yeah, Luculla was the baker (unless I'm way off base, and given that I'm doing this from work, that is a possibility).

@Dom: Yeah, it's likely that Sabrina and/or Jessi would've mentioned at some point the spoilered info about the twins.

And Luculla's the baker; the Tian woman hasn't given her name.

Luculla whispers to Dom, "My guess is that she's some sort of investigator the family's hired. The dottari tend to do Thrune business first and everything else when they get the free time."

When Falina approaches and questions the investigator, the Tian woman looks up and replies, "They seem to be missing. You know them? How? When did you last see or speak with either of them?"

I'll give folks another day or so to interact; then I'll move to the outside group and their attempt to tail the investigator. A quick reminder that curfew's closing in, so add that little nugget into your planning.

Trying to recall, has Falina ever met the twins? I'm sure she's heard about them from Sabrina/Jessi but I can't recall if I've met them or not.

Not sure if Dekamund is with the chatting group or outside? Presumed the former but T'chazzar suggested I accompany him. Fine with either.

Prior to enacting the plan...

Dekamund nods at Falina's question;

"I do indeed have some skill in sniffing out lies and falsehoods Mistress... Honed in the barbershoppe as I listen to men boast and bluster."

I suggested Arani and Davina do the tailing work owing to their high Stealth skills (and Davina's facility with Disguise). I suspect your talents lend themselves more to chatting up this woman. Given that I don't even see Stealth listed in your skills, I suspect Dekamund and Jessibel could have a blunder-off. :D

No, Falina's never met them in person. She's probably heard their names and a few simple details from either Sabrina or Jessibel.

The Tian woman never gives her name. She does correct Falina when she uses the name 'Davina' instead of 'Leora'...and takes a moment to jot this new name into her ledger. The investigator makes no comment on Falina's theory but utters her thanks before moving on.

Those Outside Waiting to Trail Her: Please roll whatever Disguise/Stealth/Etc. skill checks you're using in the endeavor.

THE STREETS OF OLD KINTARGO (21 Gozran)

The woman makes her way north from the Tooth and Nail to a small establishment called the Olde Crown Inn & Tavern on the east side of the Old Kintargo Cemetery. Although she peers around occasionally during the walk, she gives no sign of having noticed you following her.

Dusk is upon the city, and the curfew will be going into effect shortly. You're left with the choice of further investigating the investigator (and likely having to stay under the same roof as her this evening), rushing back to the Tooth and Nail now, or risk being caught out after curfew.
