Rab-rab, Min, and Layaali:
You are focused on the spreading fire. Though you are making progress on the fire nearest to you, the fire in the far corner of the mill is spreading far too quickly. Without more assistance or a different strategy, your plan is doomed to failure.

Drael runs to the door behind the bar, seeing a chain wrapped around the door handles and fastened in place with a crowbar.

It'll be a simple Strength check to pull it out - which you can attempt next round! Don't forget your condition, Drael.

I'll just hit fast-forward on this.

Rab-rab, Layaali, and Min continue to try to quell the fire, though it's obvious their efforts are purely buying the team time.

GM rolls, pt 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 261d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 201d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 161d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 81d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
GM rolls, pt 2: 1d6 ⇒ 11d6 ⇒ 41d6 ⇒ 21d6 ⇒ 4 Layaali takes 1pt of fire damage, Min, Rab-rab, and Razif each take 4pts of fire damage. Everyone who takes damage is effectively nauseated for the round, and can only take a single action.

Drael studies the door fastened - but not locked - with the chain and crowbar. The pounding and yelling that he heard has ominously silenced. Who might be behind the door?

Drael, please proceed: a Strength check if you'd like to open the door, or whatever else you'd like to try.

Male NG Keleshite Ranger (Flamewarden) 5 | HP: 42/42| AC: 17(13 Tch, 15 Fl) | CMB: +5, CMD: 18 | F: +6, R: +7, W: +2; | Init: +3 | Perc: +7, | Speed 30ft | No current conditions | Ammo: 41 arrows

If Drael chooses to force open the door, Razif will attempt to aid him.

Drael summons all of his strength and tears at the crowbar, trying to clear the doorway.

Strength: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Grand Lodge

The Mountain's Maw |

Searing Damage to Drael: 1d6 ⇒ 1 No damage taken, Drael!
Searing Damage to Razif: 1d4 ⇒ 3 pts of fire damage, Razif!

Drael notices the intrinsic heat emanating off of the metal of the crowbar as he grabs it, but his suli resistance to such things allows him to shrug it off. Not so Razif as he helps him pull; the ranger pulls away with a start.

Fortunately, the door opens as the chain falls away. Inside, two tow-headed girls, similar in size and appearance, lay on the ground, recently passed out from the smoke filling the building, obviously recently pounding on the door, as evidenced by the blisters on their hands and forearms. Nothing else can be discovered in the rapidly-devolving death-trap. Realising the predicament that they're in, the company beats a hasty retreat out of the building bearing the twin girls under their arms.

Knowledge Local DC 15:
These are the twin girls of the Cheswick family, their middle two children: Pippi and Ruby.

As they exit the smoking soon-to-be-ruin of a mill, those suffering from smoke inhalation (i.e. everyone save for Drael) find their lungs relaxing (you all lose the nauseated condition) in response to the evening air, despite the rolling clouds of white-grey smoke. Drael struggles with the twin girls' floppy forms, certain that they still live, but not certain how poorly off they are.

Unfortunately, he and his company don't have time to ponder this. From around the north road leading into the foothills of the Brazen Peaks just outside of town, a low growling howl sounds in slow echoed unison from the five hulking forms waiting within the rolling smoke - gnolls on the hunt; gnolls on the ambush!

Rab-rab pops the gnoll closest to her. The high-powered blast takes the gnoll in the groin, and the canine creature collapses in a howl to the ground.

Drael turns to the next gnoll threatening the gnome siblings, doing his best to strike it down as well.

I'll assume that's the yellow one, as the red one doesn't have a direct path to the gnomes.

Drael chops into the blinded gnoll sniffing the air for a target for its great club like a lumberjack dives into a fir tree. The ultimate result is much the same, and the gnoll topples minus one intact leg.

    Layaali may act!

18/21 by my count. There's 1 pt of fire damage missed.

Drael kills another gnoll, dropping the creatures into a two-on-five fight, while Layaali heals the diminutive sorcerer. With a roar of frustration, the only uninjured gnoll wades in past Razif's right shoulder, barking an order as he goes.

"Hey bêaqilan! Li yên lawaz bisekinin!"

    Gnoll:
"You fools! Focus on the weak ones!"

The gnoll aims a brutal uppercut swing at Min's face.

    Melee Attack vs Min: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 171d10 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14 HIT! 14 pts of bludgeoning dmg, Min!

Seeing Min get hurt badly, Razif jumps back to build some distance and immediately retaliates.

The ranger's arrow pierces straight through the upper jaw of the gnoll attacking Min, lodging in place in a gruesome fashion such that the creature can't shut its mouth. A pathetic howling mewl escapes from its mouth, though it keeps its feet.

You are correct, Razif. I got a bit off there. I've gone ahead and simply doubled your critical hit damage there. Min, it is your turn!

    M Suli Bloodrager/5 (HP 15/64|5/54)| AC:17(17) | T:11 | FF:16 | CMB:8 | CMD:19 | Fort:+6|8 | Ref:2| Will:+1 | Init:+3 | Perc:+8 | Speed 25)

*ack* You got me! Correct, Drael.

The impaled gnoll, blood pouring from its mouth, coughs and splutters, choking on the blood pouring from the macabre wound. With a hideous noise, it inhales and gurgles, racing away from the scene heedlessly. Not one to allow a foe to disengage so quickly, Drael swings out with a vengeful blow, putting the pathetic thing out of its misery.

That's a flavour AoO. Min still can act - with one target remaining!

Min's icy blast hits the remaining gnoll in the throat. The gnoll coughs and gasps for a few seconds before its eyes roll up in its head and it collapses.

    COMBAT END!

The heat from the inferno that was the Cheswick Mill billows in waves over the gang of adventurers as they gather the still-limp bodies of the twin girls and make their way across the Pale River bridge, emerging from a wall of smoke. A gathering of concerned town members at the far end of the bridge give a small cheer as the team emerge with two survivors, though the apparent injuries suffered give pause from any hearty clasps on the back.

Dallen, one of the mercenaries from Princess Almah's team and a newly-minted sergeant in the New Kelmarane town guard, steps forward. "You didn't get those slashes battling the blaze, my lords and ladies." He glances at the twin girls with his sharp eyes. "What has become of the rest of the Cheswicks? Who set this fire?"

Drael shakes his head, No idea. We came after seeing the smoke, but were too late to catch whoever did it. I saw a body inside, just before we heard the girls calling for help, but didn't have a chance to get it out before the gnolls showed up.

”Gnolls?” Dallen gulps. ”Aren’t the Kulldis all dead? What are those dogs doing back here?” The crowd starts murmuring at the news.

At this point, one of the two girls carried by Drael starts coughing and waking up.

Razif is a little surprised at the casual attitude of the town members.
"I suggest we leave the questions until we've got the fire under control. At the very least, we should try to make sure it doesn't spread to the rest of town!"

The Cheswick Mill, on the northern side of the bridge across the Pale River, borders no other buildings. Apart from the smoke, there's little risk to the rest of the town.

"Yeah. I think that there's nothing much we're going to save from the mill, m'lord." Dallen's tone of voice is flat and mournful as he gazes at the engulfed building.

One of the twin girls opens her eyes (Slide 2), looking with fright at Drael, then Razif and Dallen, before settling on Layaali's kind visage.

"Who are you?!? Where's my mama??" Her hoarse cry triggers a string of coughing.
