Gamemaster Kobolum's Way of the Wicked (Inactive)

Game Master Kobolum

Guilty. You are a lawbreaker – the worst of the worst. Too dangerous to live amongst the good people of Talingarde, they dragged you in chains before a magistrate and condemned you. They sent you to the worst prison in the land and there they forever marked you. They held you down and branded you with a runic F. You are forsaken. You won’t be at Branderscar Prison for long. Branderscar is only a holding pen. In three days – justice comes. In three days – everything ends.

What a pity. If only there was a way out of this stinking rat-hole. If only there was a way to escape. If only…

No. No one has ever escaped from Branderscar Prison. This is where your story ends.

Venn eyes Taldran suspiciously. Blushing!? What nonsense! Is he a plant? To what end? We’re already condemned to die. ”Indeed. Perhaps. We were talking about that while you were exchanging ‘a few pecks’. Don’t suppose you’ve any skills or magic to lend to the effort, aye?”

Taldran turns to Venn, meeting eye to eye.

"In fact, I do have an ability to ensure success on any skill on contact. However, the rate of success is dependent on your mastery of the said skill. The more amateurish you are at a skill, the less likely it will succeed. My magic, on the other hand, is more suited for battle and undoing those wounds."

Tone returning to normalcy, he priest gestures at Baolo with a swerve of his head when he says "wounds." Then, his head swings back to its normal position.

"So, is there anyone who can pick locks or slip out of these bonds? Me? I can only hope to wiggle out of these manacles. Picking locks is beyond my ability."

"Then it seems we will die here today my fellow prisoners! T'was good knowing you! Now if you don't mind, I'm going to try and work up the guts to bite my tongue off so I can bleed out. Deny them the satisfaction." With this, less something unusual happens, Aviaun becomes unresponsive.

Hmm. Even if we had lockpicks, we may be in trouble. Doesn’t seem as if anyone has the skill.

Venn averts his eyes from Taldran’s gaze when the human returns the challenge once the moment has passed, he thinks for a few moments then turns his head to look at his manacles or those of his neighbor’s. ”Any chance one of you brutes could pop these? It’ll make noise, but if timed right, like when we’re being fed...”

Venn will Take 20 on a perception check to study the manacles for a 24.

Taldran yawns.

"There is a more subtle way. We attract one of the guards by causing a commotion and have one person distract him while the rest of us steal the key from him under his nose. The hinges of this plan rely on how well the person can distract him. Without him, this plan falls apart. If we are doing this, we will have to initiate it at a time when there is a least amount of guards station here. We should study their patterns such as their patrols, rotations and numbers allocated before we begin."

If the guard is close enough, we can try using our feet or our teeth to grab the key via sleight of hand if such thing is possible. If Casius can cast charm person on the guard, it will be much easier. But Taldran does not know that IC until the group or Casius himself inform him (Taldran) of his (Casius) abilities.

Casius sighs as Taldran reveals nothing of use. "So your visitor didn't give you anything that might help us escape or anything like that? I could possibly distract or charm a guard, I could even make the guard a bit drowsy and inattentive, but I have not the strength to break these chains, nor am I agile enough to wriggle out of them. I can only have two charmed at a time, however - and won't be able to charm any others until I have time rest." He eyes the red-skinned man with the tail. "What about that tail? Could you possibly slip the key off the guard's belt?"

Venn looks a bit more hopeful at Casius's words. "Charming them? That seems promising. Do you need your hands free to do it?" As to the question, he grimaces slightly and shakes his head. "It's not something I've ever tried. If we can knock the keys loose, I could summon some darkness then pick them up off the floor, if they're close enough. But lifting them unnoticed from a belt? No."

Taldran fixates his eyes on the tail.

"It is a good opportunity to test its use then. We have nothing to lose until our execution. At best, they either give us an earful or several bashes with their clubs."

The cleric looks up at ceiling.

"So what is going to be our stories? We need one for his entry and one on his way out and suspect when his key is missing. If you think that's too risky, then the only other option other than breaking and theft lies with the veil that I received from the lady that "visited" me which may conceal something that can help us out of these shackles."

He switches his view to the hand that holds the veil.

Aviauns head jerks up as soon as the veil is mentioned. "You had something that you didn't tell us about!? Fool! Try everything! Look at the veil, see if it does have something, maybe its trim is an adamant wire, or maybe its magical." Aviaun whispers as his eyes burn with ferocity, his gaze landing firmly set upon Taldran.

Venn blinks at the revelation of the veil, shocked or stupefied into a moment of silence. "She... what? You get a mysterious visitor and she gives you something? This is either a ridiculously elaborate plot to ensnare us in something worse than we're already in, or..." His voice trails off in hopeful speculation.

"Can you tell if it's magical? What does it look like?"

He tries to keep his voice down so as to not alert the guards.

Casius felt a surge of hope. His visitor had left him something. Something they could maybe use to escape. "Yes, hurry. Could it cut through chains or turn into a lockpick or something?"

Baolo simply looked on in interest, indeed, the man was more built for throwing his weight around, not to come up with good escape plans. However, after a moment of listening, trying to wrap his head around the concept of what adamant might be that it could become a wire, the big man did add, "I ain't too good at slipping from chains and haven't tried breaking chain links before. But maybe the chains can be pulled from the wall...or the like?"

Upon closer inspection of the veil there are several intricate patterns weave in into it. The veil in the image. And just so we don't spend another week with you guys trying to figure out what it does...

As Taldran examines the veil in better detail he notices the pentagram symbol in the center of the veil. Running his thumb over it the pattern appears to peel off the Veil and fall to the ground turning into a silver symbol of Asmodeus.

As the symbol of his deity drops to the ground due to his demonstration, the cleric glares at the group.

”Happy now?!”

Taldran's feet works to move the symbol under his soles and hay to hide it from view.

"Fool! Do you want me to jeopardize our chances at leaving this confine?! If I had made a single mistake during my inspection, I may accidentally release and reveal all of its contents. Because of our inability to reach them due to how we are shackled, the guards will confiscate them the next time they attend to us and we cannot leave at all."

Tone a whispery hiss, he matches the half-breed with a glare of equal ferocity.

"And for your information, I highly suspected the veil is magical storage for items before that display. How? I put the pieces together when the lady revealed her true intention and when she left me the veil as a parting gift. It was then I suspected that she was sneaking something in to help us escape this prison. That reminds me of the crucial information that I was about to convey to all of you before this bear's offhanded comment caught me off-guard and made me almost forgotten it.”

The cleric switches his glare to Baolo though it is brief as he reverts to his neutral expression.

”Yes, there is more. Now no interruptions unless you want me to forget what I am saying again. Listen carefully because I am not going to repeat this. You know that lady that visited me? She was not a visitor at all. Called herself Tiadora. An angel in black, possessing beauty that is unearthly. Charmed herself in with her allure. She was more of a messenger for her friend than a visitor. Her intention is to break us out of this prison so that we can meet her friend. Well, it's more of her friend's intention and goal. Rather than acting himself, he was acting through her. This Tiadora was just here to deliver his message and package.”

He pauses and looks at the Aviaun again.

”Don't get your hopes up that she will rescue us. We have to break ourselves out.”

Taldran makes a sharp low noise in his throat.

”As I was saying, her friend wants to meet all of us after our escape and he sent us the veil through Tiadora to aid in our breakout. I do not know which faction they are affiliated with but I know that they are at least not on the side of those damned Mitrans.”

He spits the last two words out with as much spite he can manage and grits his teeth.

”Anyway, if we did escape, he wants us to cross the moors on the outskirts of town. And on the old Moor Road, find a manor house with a single lantern burning in the second story. He give us three days, tops. Not certain of his purpose of wanting to meet us but whatever purpose he has in mind, I hope it is interesting.”

Taldran look at the veil above him and lower his head that stares at nothing.

“Now that I think of it. That won't work and have a high possibility of failing. Forget all the things that I said about using the veil and stealing the keys to unlock our chains. In our current state, those ways are either far too risky or impossible. Our best bet on getting out of our bindings and cell is charming a guard and persuade him to release us. So we will have to rely on your talents, Casius.

The cleric bows his head.

"I..." Venn chokes off the nascent apology as the man reveals additional information. Briefly, his head is lowered as if expecting the lash of a whip or switch, but when Taldran continues to speak he looks back up, intrigued. Hmm...

He glances at Casius, then the others. "Break out or not... if there's a chance to kill some of these sun-worshipping bastards, I'm in."

Aviaun widens his eyes and grins as Taldran speaks to him, when the man finishes he responds in a tone that could only be described as quintessentially condescending.

"Well, I'm oh so sorry that our large friends speech was loud enough to rattle your little mind to the point of nearly forgetting a way out of this death pit. So if you don't mind, let's get a guards attention, startle him, then charm his sorry little head and get out of here."

The plan:
So far the plan seems to be call the guard in and charm him. I suggest we all try and intimidate him to further increase our chances.

Casius winces slightly at the man's tirade. That level of rudeness is rather unnecessary. Out loud, he says, "Seeing as our day of execution is in three days, our benefactor's deadline is a rather good one, yes? We should wait to implement the plan until night falls - if we can figure out when night is. What time of day was it when we were brought in?"

Can we make any kind of check to try and figure out what time of day it is?

Taldran, at this point, has calmed after his long winded speech. He ignores most of Aviaun's arrogant speech which are laden with childish provocation except the part where he explains his plan. Jerking his head up as the mesmerist inquires about the time of day, the cleric turns to Casius.

"I am uncertain. I was briefly blinded when my head was covered with a hood throughout our journey to Brandescar. But I heard the cries of the seagulls from the wagon. So I deduce it must be day. Morning perhaps early noon."

He closes his eyes before opening them again.

"I agree with you that we should wait until nightfall to carry it out. But we should also consider the time when they feed us. About the plan, I don't think we need to scare the guard or do anything drastic. Once we charmed the guard, all we need are light words and a good story to deceive him into releasing us. Story-wise, something like us being part of the guards that had been deceived, beaten and cuffed to these walls by the prisoners we inspected before they stole our clothes and escaped a while ago. If it went well and the guard left to inform others about this development while leaving the cell door open, it will buy us enough time to arm ourselves with the items from the veil and make our escape."

Venn thinks on the discussion of time for a moment, then says, "Next time they come in, let's just ask. No, seriously. An innocuous question, not as to time of day that they'd be suspicious of, but something prisoners would care about: 'Hey, guard, when's dinner?' Or, if they're feeding us, 'Is this what you're having for dinner, too?' Just try to find a way to trick them."

GM, on that note, is there literally a guard outside the cell as we've been talking the whole time? If so, I hope the cell has solid walls instead of bars! Otherwise we've been terribly indiscrete! ;-) But, if it seems like we'll be getting food and water at some point, we'll likely wait until that. If not, let us know... Aviaun cackles at his jab, waiting to see if the guard reacts.

The guard, who's been standing in front of your cell with his back to you, looks over his shoulder at Aviaun comment and says, "Laugh it up bloodsucker, but you'll never get the taste righteous blood again. You can lick the blood off the block before your own head comes off.

In his own thoughts, Venn is terrified. This is the end. He's going to get them all coming in here to kill us. But, if we're going to die anyway... These bastards, Mitran deceivers. And when you die, what? You've sinned in their eyes. There will be no release. Take down as many of them with you as you can.

If the guard does look into the cell, Venn just laughs and adds to the taunting, "Aw, big guy, I'm thinking he should have gagged his mom the other night when I was with her. She liked it from both ends, she did." He waves his tail about with a grin.

The guard says nothing and soon begins to walk away, probably to get a gag or six.

As he walks away the only woman in the cell with a smile let's a smile crossed her face. Then taking the Cockroach that Baolo flipped off on to her into her hand she mutters quickly and quietly and crushes it, opening her palm to reveal a rat. "Be ready to steal keys."

Venn's anxiety spikes through the roof. Do or die. If the mind-bender can't pull this off, we're done for. Instead, he manages a stone-faced glower as the two guards come in, tail lowered back to the ground.

"Seriously. A man can only survive a couple days without water. Unless you want us all to be dead from dehydration before our execution, you're going to have to give us food and water. Or didn't they teach you that in guard school?"

Bluff to look like he isn't scared: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 Oh. Of course now I roll high. F'ing RNG.

Taldran is about to open his mouth but when Cassius suggest to the first guard to invite the second guard into the cell, his mouth snaps shut.

I hope Cassius knows what he is doing. He is playing with fire here.

While this is happening, the cleric does not say anything, watching how this proceeding play out.

At Casiuss suggestion the guard looks ready to protest, but when Baolo comments about food the guard remembers who exactly he is and what he did to get sent to Branderscar in the first place. He looks back to wave the other guard in, who draws his club as he does so.

Will Save: 1d20 - 1 - 2 ⇒ (14) - 1 - 2 = 11

At Venn's comment the guard holding the gags looks over at him and says, "You're not going to be alive for a couple of days, so it doesn't matter." Venn doesn't look scared.

Not sure if I am reading your last sentence right. Shouldn't it be "in a couple of days" instead of "for a couple of days?" Unless that is your intention.
