Laufey stands firm against the sinspawn as it comes at her. She blocks its route to the door, keeping it open for the others to enter.

Rasmorn, the rules appear to be unclear on this, so I'm going to say that if you want to use shift while casting the spell, you need to make a Concentration check akin to vigorous motion (DC 10+spell level) if you use it while casting a 1 round spell like Summon Monster. However, you can use shift before you start casting without issue. I will let you retcon that you did that first if you want. I'll call the space diagonally northeast of you occupiable by Small-size or smaller creatures.

Round 1

As usual, Isabella casts guidance on Laufey, lacking any other spells.

Rasmorn begins to make various arcane gestures and sounds, building up to his next spell.

On her action Talia advances and will load a cold iron bolt, shooting at the Quasit. "Used up all the magic have you?" She taunts it, spotting it's worried about the dimming glow of the pool.

Laufey stands firm against the sinspawn as it comes at her. She blocks its route to the door, keeping it open for the others to enter. She swings her newfound magic sword, striking the sinspawn a powerful blow.

The quasit cries out as the cold iron bolt pierces her, then glares at Talia and disappears.

GM Rolls:

Quasit stealth: 1d20 + 41 ⇒ (5) + 41 = 46

Yasu looks about for the quasit.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Unable to find it, he looses an arrow at the Sinspawn.

The Sinspawn falls to the ground from his arrow.

I was under the impression that using Shift ended my turn immediately, like Dimension Door does. I would love for that to not be true, though! In this case, it makes no difference either way, so I'll not worry about retconning anything.

Rasmorn finishes his arcane gestures, and with a shout he points his little arm forward. As he does, an eagle appears in the air above the pool of water. The gnome gestures to where the quasit was last seen, in the air above the balcony, trying to get the eagle to go there. Rasmorn will then move into the corner of the room, looking about for the fiend.

Ideally would like the eagle to fly up to that area and try to find the quasit. Maybe have it make a perception check to spot it? You never know, nat 20s happen!

Also, ready an action to fire Color Spray at the quasit if I know it comes in range and I can hit it without catching anyone else in the path.

With the sinspawn down, Laufey sheathes her sword and takes her bow up. She nocks a cold iron tipped arrow and looks around for the demon, readying a shot.

"Where did it go?"

Rasmorn, it will be a move action to make a Perception check to find the Quasit.

Rasmorn's eagle looks around, trying to find where the foe that he had been summoned to fight might be.

Assuming that is not enough to spot an invisible demon...

Not seeing anything, the eagle will just fly up to where Rasmorn is gesturing to, hoping to spot something to attack soon...

Note that, due to conjuration school, duration of my mighty eagle is a mighty 3 rounds instead of 2. Take that, quasit!

You suddenly hear the quasit speaking something - you don't understand the language but it sounds like a chant or a spell. It's voice is coming from to your left.

It is still a DC 10 Perception check to pinpoint the square, and the quasit is still invisible. Top of the round.

"I think it's over there!" says Isabella, pointing.


Talia is able to pinpoint the area the Quasit is in thanks to her spellcasting, and fires her crossbow at it. Laufey follows up with her own arrow, but unfortunately both miss. Rasmorn's eagle flies towards the area, trying to bite the Quasit with celestial fury. The quasit being too far away for color spray, Rasmorn waits for the quasit to appear.

Despite the eagle's bite finding its mark, the quasit is able to finish its spell, and a fiendish giant centipede appears next to Rasmorn! It attempts to bite the gnome, but merely snaps at the air far above his head.

The quasit defensively casts another spell, and Laufey suddenly feels her muscles begin to seize as she begins to be paralyzed. Laufey, DC 14 Will save or you are paralyzed. This causes the quasit to become visible, and she attempts to fly away from the eagle avoiding it's beak. She isn't quick enough, and the eagle snaps at her.

Eagle AoO, smite: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

The Eagle's beak misses, and she is able to remove herself from being near the summon.

Yasu fires a cold iron arrow at the now-visible Quasit.

His arrow is only a grazing shot, but still connects.

Round 3

Isabella unlimbers her heavy falchion and chops at the centipede! Unfortunately, her swing goes wide.

Rasmorn, seeing he's in a rather precarious situation, takes a step to press himself against the wall, then blinks himself further away from the centipede with his magical abililty.

Having Rasmorn 5-foot step and then use his shift school ability to get out of harm's way.

His eagle pursues the quasit and strikes with its beak.

Eagle Bite, Smite, charge: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 2 = 13

Unfortunately, it misses the tiny target.

Talia again tries to shoot the Quasit, but her crossbow bolt goes wide.

Laufey fights off the creeping paralysis and shoots another cold iron arrow at the quasit. The arrow misses the mark, as well.

The quasit attempts to defensively activate its invisibility, but the eagle's presence proves too distracting. It attempts to acrobatically fly away from the Eagle, but fails to do so and the Eagle snaps at it again.

The Eagle unfortunately misses the mark.

The Centipede seems enraged by the site of Isabella's holy symbol, and takes a bite at the cleric.

Fortunately for Isabella, the centipede has as much difficulty hitting her as it did Rasmorn

Yasu fires another arrow at the Quasit.

This time his arrow strikes true, the massive arrow striking the target.

Isabella swings again, hoping for a lucky hit! This time, her falchion strikes true, bisecting the centipede neatly.

Rasmorn's eagle again charges the quasit.

Unfortunately, the eagle misses, and then winks out of existence, its magic gone.

Rasmorn again prepares for if the quasit comes into range.

Now the pest is visible Talia makes taking her out before she casts again her priority. Her crossbow flies true, striking the quasit in the shoulder.

Laufey sends another cold iron arrow at the quasit. But her arms are trembling and it's not the shot it might have been. Still, it grazes the quasit as it flies by.

The quasit, no longer threatened by the eagle and profusely injured, turns invisible.

GM Rolls:

Stealth, Invisible: 1d20 + 21 + 20 ⇒ (11) + 21 + 20 = 52

Yasu looks about, trying to find the quasit.

All of you look around, trying to find a sign of the Quasit. Suddenly, you hear the sound of spellcasting - coming from above the doorway right above Rasmorn!

DC 10 Perception Check to pinpoint the correct square, and the invisible quasit has total concealment (50% miss chance).

Concealment Rasmorn's readied action, high is a miss: 1d100 ⇒ 61

Rasmorn's prepared acid splash misses the quasit.

Rasmorn flinches visibly when the casting starts, and lets out a little squeak. He then (assuming I can do this, not entirely sure how this spell works three-dimensionally...) casts a quick spell, and shoots a Color Spray directly above him. He then strategically positions himself behind his companions. Run away, run away!


GM Rolls:

WIll: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

Rasmorn's brilliant spray of colors causes the quasit to cry out in surprise and breaks her concentration. It also breaks her invisibility, as she seems to be stunned. A tiny dagger falls from her hands, and she hovers in place.

The quasit is visible and stunned for one round. Finish it!

With that final arrow, the quasit is skewered, and falls from the air.

Combat is over! You have killed the quasit.

"Ugh... demons. But it does let us know that we're on the right track. Something is definitely going wrong down here, and if demons are involved, we have to put an end to it."

"Is this the demon then? It seems small..."

"If so, they are not so hard to kill. Mostly it is catching them" she says briskly, seeming satisfied. "What now? More doors?"

When Talia picks up the dagger, it grows to a larger size - still too small for her hands comfortably, but in Rasmorn's hands it fits appropriately.

Rasmorn:

The dagger is a +1 returning cold iron dagger. The rest is non-magical, but could be worth something.

Talia finds no traps on the other doors, which, when opened, reveal themselves to be closets of some kind - perhaps they used to contain priest's vestments?

The runewell yet bubbles away, with an orange glow.

With the defeat of the quasit and completing your exploration of the Catacombs, you are now level 3! Congratulations!

You again look over the catacombs, taking your time to look for any signs of the quasit's origins. You find no other rooms or signs of secret doors anywhere in the complex, nor any other creatures - living or not.

Rasmorn does know that demons are effectively immortal, and this quasit could have been down here for many years.

You've explored the entire Catacombs - there's nothing left to examine except the Runewell.

I have leveled up in my HeroLab file, but haven't updated paizo yet. I will do so later today.

Rasmorn moves closer to the well, obviously nervous around it but just as obviously curious. He casts Detect Magic on it, trying to see what he can identify.

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11


Rasmorn detects a strong aura of necromancy about it - very strong, far beyond his power. He doesn't know much about its function or how to destroy it - although he does recall that when the quasit dripped her blood into the runewell to create the Sinspawn, the runewell's glow faded, as though it had consumed some of its power.
