GM miteke - Voice in the Void (Inactive)

Game Master miteke

Voice in the Void: Mystery strikes again at the problem-plagued Blackros Museum in Absalom and its curator, Nigel Aldain, needs your help. When a famed Osirian tomb raider returns to Absalom and disappears in the museum's basement, Aldain fears the worst. When strange sounds echo from below and several of the curator's night watchmen go missing, he panics and begs the Society to investigate the mystery and save his museum from the darkness that infests it.

Voice in the Void is a follow-up scenario to Pathfinder Society Scenario #5: Mists of Mwangi. When played together, the scenarios create a mini story arc in the famed Blackros Museum.

There you go! Yes, the time matches up with the guards deployment. That and the clothing point to this being one of the guards sent down. I'm still hoping for a translator. There is some valuable info in the notes that will give some guidance in the fight with the BBEG. Just sayin'.

But we can move on to the next door and retroactively fill that in if someone steps forward. So point me in the right direction, please.

The doors open onto a vast hall draped in shadowy cobwebs and filled with haphazardly placed statues. The air is heavy with dust. Any noise echoes hollowly among the figures, some swathed in thick coverings like misshapen beasts, others bare and uncovered, all coated in a thick layer of dust. Leering visages faces carved in grimaces and scowls. This room has a 20-foot-high ceiling and holds a dazzling collection of sculptures, effigies, and statues of different sizes, some draped in sheets, others coated with a thick layer of dust. Unlit oil lamps hang from brackets in the center of each wall. A wooden sign on a door in the southern wall reads “Scriptorium—Quiet Please.”

I would like to know about any resistances or immunities it has. Then special attacks. Weaknesses after that if applicable.

Selethe stabs at the statue with her longspear.

If I can strike it from where I am, I will do so. If I need to enter the room first that's fine go ahead and move me. If that would trigger an AoO I will roll acrobatics.

longspear: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

acrobatics if needed: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Marock's concentration is on the middle of the room as the statues hand starts moving slowly, then gathering momentum as its sword descends towards Marock. Selethe, positioned perfectly to see the whole thing from start to finish gets the drop on it and punishes it with a stab from her spear. She realizes immediately that this is a caryatid column, a construct with the usual construct immunities which includes, in this case, immunity to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance. The second thing she gets, a moment after the spear contacts the construct is that is tough shell shatters weapons. That and damage resistance that greatly reduces the damage she does. Had you a transmutation spell that worked on stone you could interfere with the damage resistance, but, alas, that spell is far beyond any of you. This is one tough opponent!

Selethe, your weapon takes weapon damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 5) = 8 and the beast takes a minuscule amount of damage. A spear has a harness of 5 and 10 hitpoints. See this link.

To Hit Longsword: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19, vs. flat footed.
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

The sword makes contact, but merely serves notice to the warpriest that he is looking in the wrong place as his armor deflects the blow to his arm.

Glad you caught that. I was looking at the longsword damage instead of the spear damage. 3 got through.

Note that even though some were not in line of view, the sheer repetitiveness of the tactics is making you all expect something to come alive and attack so I gave you all an init chance. Well, Season 0 and 1 will do that to you. All hand drawn maps, and MURDER EVERYTHING! I promise, the scenarios get more interesting and complicated as the seasons go on. I might recommend Library of the Lion or Bid for Alabastrine for something cool, and less combat oriented.

That being said, there should be some hardness on the Warhammer. Steel has Hardness 10, so that might apply.

Warhammer:

This weapon consists of a wooden haft and a heavy, metal head. The head may be single (like a carpenter's hammer) or double (like a sledgehammer). The haft is long enough that you may wield it one- or two-handed. Though heavy and relatively slow to wield, warhammers are capable of delivering immense blows, crushing armor and flesh alike.

The Warhammer is a wooden hafted weapon, which I believe is 5 hardness and 10 HP. I could be wrong about this, but with 12 damage it would be broken at the minimum with 3 HP left to be destroyed.

Thokzazt is correct about the acid. He is using a blessing that adds (1d4) acid damage.

See discussion thread for more on questions

@Thokzazt
The weapon damaging thing is pretty simple. You hit it and it does 2d6 damage to your weapon. Not very friendly.

OK, moving on. The acid damage from Marock was not done since it takes a standard action to activate that ability. He's having a bad day :(

Thokzazt totally whiffs, but Selethe lands a splash of acid which deals 4 points of damage (I see no reason studied target would not apply. Construct traits: Constructs are immune to death effects, Disease, mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects), necromancy effects, paralysis, Poison, sleep, stun, and any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless). Constructs are not subject to nonlethal Damage, ability Damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or Energy Drain. Constructs are not at risk of death from massive Damage.)

The statue is mindless and continues its relentless attack on Marock.
To hit: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20 but also whiffs. It is having much better luck destroying weapons than people.

Absolutely! As I said the place is as cluttered as a place can be. The trick will be picking something that is not valuable to the museum. I will say that it will take you one standard action to equip yourself with something. Would you rather do that than play target dummy?

@Tho
I had assumed that you had the Unarmed Strike feat since you did not post that your damage was non-lethal. I'm not seeing it though. Are your fist blows lethal or non-lethal, because if non-lethal I'm going to have to retro that damage. Partly my fault since I thought the AoO last round was from the movement but you had it clearly labelled beside the strike.

If retrieving an improvised weapon means moving from my current location then Marock will maintain full defensive, absorb the things attacks, and hope that the group can eventually destroy the animation.

If there is something close enough to Marock to pick up that doesn't cause him to move from being the main target, then he will retrieve the weapon and strike the animation.

Note: Being the target dummy takes priority.

Battle Host from the PRD wrote:
Panoply Bond (Su): At 1st level, a battle host forms a supernatural bond with a specific weapon, suit of armor, or shield. This selection is permanent and can never be changed. The bonded item is masterwork quality and the battle host begins play with it at no cost. The bonded item is immune to the broken condition for as long as the battle host lives. If a battle host dies and is restored to life, the bonded item is also restored if it was destroyed. Any magic powers associated with a battle host's bonded item function only for the battle host; in the hands of anyone else it is only a masterwork item. The bonded item starts as an implement for any single school of magic at 1st level, and gains access to additional schools of magic at 2nd, 10th, 14th, and 18th levels, granting the battle host access to base focus powers and resonant powers accordingly. The battle host's bonded item serves as his implement component to cast occultist spells of all the schools that he knows. However, he must split his mental focus among the schools he knows for the purpose of determining resonant powers and using focus powers, even though he possesses only one physical item as an implement. This ability alters implements, mental focus, spellcasting, and implement mastery.

Selethe tries to burn the statue with acid again.

ranged touch attack+studied: 1d20 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 + 1 = 16
acid damage+studied: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

The acid hits it squarely in the chest. Fissures spread out from the hole the acid leaves. It jerks as it tries to lift its weapon one more time and then collapses across the doorway and crumbles to dust leaving a fist-sized opal inside (250 gp). A search reveals nothing else of interest (at higher tiers or if doing the faction missions there is a bit more).

Current Conditions:
Selethe: -1 int, 3/10 HP damage to spear
Marock: -5 hp, destroyed morningstar, improvised game board weapon.
Erlathan: Mage Armor
Thokzazt: Deathwatch (no cost so it is always up)
Theron:

Marock set the game board down and pulls out a wand of cure light wounds.

"Well done. That was one tough construct." The priest says as he looks down at his shattered weapon.

"Well that is truly a shame. I will have to talk to the smith about this. I thought I had bought a well crafted item." The priest shakes his head in disbelief. "You can't trust anyone these days."

"Well it looks like I have only a couple options at this point. A.) I can forge around these rooms and hope to find an alternative melee weapon. B.) I can head out and try and buy another melee weapon then come back. C.) I can switch to my crossbow and pray for accuracy. What do you guys think?"

After considering his options, Marock heads over to the fallen guard and retrieves the dead man’s club. Once in hand he stows away the club with the intent to use it as an alternative weapon.

With less favorable options available, the priest pulls out a light crossbow, loads it, and prepares to move forward.

“Thokzazt, if you don't mind, can take point for a while. With my primary weapon being destroyed, I believe you may be better equipped for the job.”

"Right, that's the first time i've encountered hostile statues.
It was a lot of bird-men previously, and this large owlbear.
It's refreshing."

"Too bad about your weapon, man, that's a bummer."

The enthusiasm of 'something new' aside, Theron takes a quick peek around.
Take 10 for 18.

You've explored all the rooms you've entered. You could give Nigil an update (not in the script but we could have fun with it) or pick one of the doors to the south.

Thokzazt's voice rings hollow in the large empty room.
"I wish that is the first time I have had to destroy a moving statue."
A few moments later, the hellknight pulls a sharpened piece of metal from his belt, and offers it to Marock.

"It never hurts to have a backup. And you can throw it in a pinch."

Taking point, Thokzazt knocks loudly on the door to the South, before opening it, and bellowing into the following room.
"By the Will of Asmodeus, under orders from rightful lord of these premises, I command you to cease any unlawful activity and reveal yourself!"

Marock accepts the sharpened piece of metal from Thokzazt and then tucks under away his belt. Staying close on the heals of the Hellknight, Marock lowers his crossbow just over the man's shoulder.

"I am right behind you."

Selethe commiserates with Marock. "That is a great loss. I do carry a spare melee weapon for narrow places where I cannot use my longspear to full advantage. If you wish, you can use this morningstar until you can get your warhammer repaired or replaced."

You open the door. This chamber contains several tall wooden bookshelves reaching to the ceiling, almost bursting with the weight of books and scrolls filling the shelves. The shelves and their contents are encrusted with thick growths of brightly colored fungus and glistening mold. Many tomes have fallen from the shelves, their open pages forming a base for more fungi and large mushrooms which carpet the floor. The air here is damp and close, and several of the fungal growths pulse with an eerie purple light that dimly lights the room.

I'll need to know exactly where you step and, if you have it, knowledge nature rolls.
