Howdy folks! Go ahead and check into the discussion here, introduce yourselves, etc.

This module assumes that you all know each other already, so you can all work that out here if you'd like! It could be as simple as all of you meeting in a tavern in Sothis, where explorers have gathered to put together expeditions to this newly discovered pyramid. Everyone who cares about such things is talking about it, and it seems like a great opportunity for historians, thrill seekers, and the inevitable tomb robbers alike!

I didn't end up recruiting a divine caster, so the Hierophant might be a good choice. Ultimately, though, it's up to you to choose whatever spirit you think would be best/most enjoyable!

Well, if divine casting is the gaping hole, I suppose that's the way to go.

Howdy y'all! Thanks for hosting the game, mechaPoet! Very excited! I'm going to finish up my character and post as the alias in a short while.

Yahoo!

I like a bit of back story, even for a module, so I'll throw some ideas everyone's way when I post.

I will get the gameplay thread up ASAP so the game is easier to track in your campaign tabs. As I mentioned, I just moved, so I need to dig the module out. It didn't get packed too deep, though. :)

When you're ready, GM- We did a Big move this past spring and are still unpacking!

El Akriban, checking in. GM mechaPoet, his final stat block is in his profile, skills etc.

Akri is a native Osirian by territory, Pahmet dwarf by birth. He is a desert dweller, a tracker and hunter of both beast and legend. He seeks the hidden past of the Pahmet - are they descended from a god-king pharaoh, or simply a slave caste freed by some forgotten accord?

Akri is comfortable and friendly with his fellows, but is much less so with outsiders. Akri brings perspective and front-line weapons to aid his allies, but is not much of a social help. He understands the histories, nature, and peoples of Osirion, but has never bothered to learn the language beyond Common. Akri is fluent in Pahmet, a dialect of dwarven common that draws upon both Osiriani and Ancient Osiriani in its structure, inflection, and canter. Just a fun way to describe Akri's native tongue

Excited to be here and looking forward to the game, so meet Khairam the Keleshite Investigator. A somewhat awkward man dealing with other people as he seems more interested in the papers he has spread on the table in front of him. A small goblet of wine holds the end of the parchment down, Khairam points to a spot, "El Akriban, you can take us there? You know that place?" His dark eyes turn to the dwarf.

M Dwarf (Pahmet) | HP: 28/28 |AC:17 (T 13 Fl 14) | CMB +6, CMD 19/15 Fl |F:+4, R:+5, W+3|Init: +4*(+2 Desert) | Perc:+8*(+2), SM +2 Ranger 3 |Speed 20 ft|

Akri smiles, seeing his old friend again.

"Khairam, you honor me with your greeting. We are among friends now, so 'Akri' is just fine."

"To answer your question- yes, I think so. I know the deserts of Osirion as well as a camel knows her fleas. We should tarry a bit longer, we should be seeing some old friends soon. Call it a hunch."

Hi everyone! Very excited to play this module! So, for a quick background story do we want to find a specific event- maybe we were all NPCs in an AP we've all played, for example.

There is a table in Ult Campaign to randomly determine how we met; I'm kind of a geek for backstory, it helps me motivate my character in a game, even if it's a one shot.

The table is 1-57, "Relationship with Fellow Adventurer(s)". It's a fun exercise, someone starts and picks another PC, rolls % dice for that bond, then that PC picks another and rolls, etc. Last PC picks first PC.

If this sounds like a good idea, I'll post the PRD link. If not, I'm not offended. I like to play with the group, this is just an idea. Off to my table game, will be back after 11 EST. Huzzah!

An androgynous-looking figure which appears to be human comes sauntering towards the duo of adventurers. While it's unclear whether it's a boy or girl approaching, it's clear that this is a figure full of confidence.

"Don't think you two ravishing fellows are about to head off without me," (s)he purrs, then adds in a slightly more masculine tone, "That is, perhaps I could be a significant help in whatever you're getting yourselves into now?"

And then, glancing down at his/herself, (s)he shakes his/her head and says, "And probably help other than her."

At this his/her head flicks back up, throws a coy wink and adds, "Though this one's a lot more fun, eh boys?"

Probably going with the hierophant spirit, but thought I'd let the trickster make a guest appearance.

Incidentally, I like the idea of having some background of how they would know each other. The Ultimate Campaign table seems suitably random to me.

Akri looks up and smiles. He motions to an empty chair. apparently we are in a ... library

"Always good to see your faces, Sionnach. Still hearing voices, I hope? We'll need them for this go-round."

The dwarf opens the window closest to him.

"Just waiting to hear from a bird, and then we can get on with things."

If Khairam and Eisalka are game, we can do the background random rolls, should I start? this will give us a minute to acquaint ourselves and our GM some time to unpack...

"Waiting to hear from a bird." I see what you did there.

Sionnach saunters over to a chair, slides into it and takes an exaggerated stretch before propping his/her feet up on the table momentarily causing the goblet to wobble and threatening to spill it all over the map.

"Why must we meet in such a dismal place," Sionnach sulks, "This depressing book cemetery doesn't even have any shiny baubles I can remove for them."

Then, with an audible sigh, (s)he closes his/her eyes and seems to doze off.

That;s 3 out 4 for the background now....

Khairam looks up at the new face and scowls as he catches his goblet, takes a sip and places it down carefully. "Huh, you again Sionnach, might have know you'd be joining us. You still don't appreciate the depth of knowledge that books can provide, the knowledge that can be the difference between finding one of your sparkling baubles and a trip to Pharesma. At least Akri has respect for this place, now quiet whilst I study." he grumbles. His hands, lined beyond his years flatten the parchment in front of him, his head bows over and he continues to read. Without looking up he suddenly blurts out "Bird?" The words pierce the library's space, but Khairam's dark eyes never stop concentrating on the words in front of him.

I haven't posted for a day, but I wanted to check in and let you know I haven't forgotten about you! I'm liking your introductions so far! I think ruling for random "how do we know each other" backgrounds sounds fun, too. Would you mind sharing the link? Anyway, I'm all moved in, but tonight and tomorrow I've got to clean my old place; I'll see what I can do to get things started though.

One last thing: how is Sionnach pronounced? I know it's Irish, which means if no one tells me how, I'm gonna say it wrong. :P

At the investigator's admonishment for the disrespect of books, Sionnach simply shows a content smile while never opening his/her eyes from the contented "slumber" (s)he's enjoying.

Anyone paying particularly close attention would notice an unusual flicker of light flash across Sionnach's holy symbol at the mention of Pharasma's name. Just as quickly as the flicker appeared, it's gone. No doubt the holy symbol of Urgathoa simply reflected light from a candle or some such light source in the room.

"Sionnach Athru" translates as "fox shift." Kitsune shapeshifter. Seemed to fit. Not sure if I'm pronouncing it correctly, but I pronounce it as "Shu-NOK."

Copied from the Paizo PRD, it's from Ultimate Campaign Table 1-57, pg 49

Relationship with Fellow Adventurers

This table is best used by the adventuring party as a whole to determine starting relationships between the characters. One player begins the process by choosing someone in the group and rolling to learn the relationship between her and the second character. Then the next player chooses a different character and rolls to determine their relationship, and so on, until finally the last player rolls to determine his relationship with the first character. It is easiest to do this sitting around a table, with each player passing the dice clockwise until the dice have completed a full turn around the table.

You can also use this table free-form if you wish, rolling for your relationship for as many or as few of the other characters as you care to define; however, the first method guarantees that every character has connections to two other characters to improve group cohesion.

If you end up with a result that makes no sense or isn't possible, reroll or just chose another option.

Akri smiles at the banter between Sionnach and Khairam. He still finds the fox's interest in Urgathoa unsettling, though he himself has come across far darker worshipers in the oases and tombs of the sands.

"Rest easy, Sionnach, there will be baubles enough, if what I've been told is true. And Khairam, we'll be in for another chapter in the history of the lost places, I'm sure."

A young man walks in, dressed in very simple grey robes. On his shoulder is a mostly normal-looking raven, though if you move your head at all, you see the edges of its feathers and beak blurring a bit.

However, instead of the young man introducing himself, the raven speaks up.

"Hello all, I'm Eisalka. This is Man. He doesn't talk much. Before you ask, this man is my arcane familiar. He carries my magical power for me while I'm stuck in this feathered form. You see, I am a wizard... once was human, actually. I'm not sure how it happened, but I must have been killed, and had some sort of elaborate spell set up to transfer my soul into this body. Perhaps this raven was my familiar before, for that matter. In any event, here I am."

Eisalka looks around the room at the others.

"A dwarf, a human, a... pretty sure you're one of those fox people. A diverse group. Hopefully we can learn to work well together, no?"

Okay, guess I'll go first. Oh magical dice of destiny, how does Sionnach know Akri?
Relationship with fellow adventurer: 1d100 ⇒ 13
Tavern buddies. Well, that doesn't play into dwarven stereotypes at all, does it?

Sionnach smiles and continues to have a "nap" while some bird comes in with a pet human.

Interesting. A spirit in another body. I think this bird and I will get along just fine. Who would have thought it possible, we've actually become a stranger band than we'd been before.

Sionnach's mind then turns to how (s)he got into this strange band in the first place. The day he had met the dwarf.

He had channeled the trickster, as he had today, and she had come up with the bad idea of visiting a tavern. Hazy minds means easily picked pockets. Some easier than others...

Just going to leave it there in case Akri wants to add to our mutual backstory

"Perhaps we could learn more if we all kept quiet for a change!" says a grumpy looking Khairam, as he raises his head briefly, giving the new human a look up and down, ignoring the bird on his shoulder as unimportant. Getting no visible response from the man, Khairam smiles and nods his head with slight up and down motion, before returning to his task of reading.

With his eyes to the parchment, Khairam speaks quietly to Akri, "You know these people?" He continues reading, not really listening even if Akri answers.

A few moments later a hand comes up and rustles his dark hair, "bah..these ancient words.. " His finger moves down to the parchment, pointing at ঈগল সূর্য কমিয়া ..from what I know, its not Ancient Osirian, Thassalonion or Azlanti ... I suppose none of you are linguists?" He looks up hopefully, but without any real expectation.

"[I]I am," came the unexpected voice of the "napping" kitsune, being pulled from his/her memories of first meeting the dwarf and being drawn into this strange company.

When nothing but silence responded, (s)he opened an eye and said, "What? I read. One can't always find shiny baubles without finding clues in books, on maps, and in bank ledgers," then (s)he flashed a charming smile while getting up and walking deliberately closely around behind the investigator to look at the parchment.

Sionnach looked it over for a bit, then pointed and asked, "Is this what's giving the book babysitter all sorts of trouble?" then flashed that smile again.

The Trickster without Sionnach enjoyed these moments of showing superiority over intellectuals like Kairam. Not that these moments came often, but she relished them and milked them for all they were worth when they arrived.

Sionnach himself bore no ill will towards the investigator, but knew that he would receive no help from her spirit if he didn't indulge her now and again.

"Now, let's see what eyes that have seen the light of day instead of the dim of book cemeteries can find here..."

Linguistics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Not sure if you really wanted a roll as this is just narrative, but figured it's good practice at least. The roll was absolute crud. Story-wise, I think it's funnier if (s)he can read it, but we can run it as failure and a dismissive proclamation that it's not even writing, just where extra ink was rubbed off a quill or some such. If you prefer the story element that (s)he gets it right, run with it!

After a brief look across the parchment, a smug smile spread across Sionnach's face.

(S)he turned back to the investigator and said in mocking baby talk, "Aww, does da poow wittle book man not know Tekritanin? Poow wittle fewwa!"

(S)he then glanced around the room and added, "I may have broken into a Pathfinder lodge and they just might have come across a woman who possibly may have been possessed by a ghost who spoke the language."

Then, a bit more smugly, (s)he said, "I may have learned a bit of the language from her. You know how us girls chat. Particularly the possessing spirit kind," and after this last bit, (s)he gave an exaggerated wink.

Waiting a moment for the anticipation to build, (s)he finally revealed, "It says, 'the eagle flies to the sun.' If you need more help, I'll just be chatting with the bird," then, taking a quick swig from the goblet, she stepped up to the raven and said, "Arcane spirit transfer, eh? Nice!"

Of course, when we actually get into the adventure, the sass and gender confusion won't actually be present as I'm probably going with the hierophant spirit. Very indulgence focused. He has a background under the "hierophant" tab in my profile.

My turn! I tend to be verbose when given the chance, so...

"Fox, when you tried to clip my purse, I nearly broke your hand. I remember, but I'm not surprised you don't, considering how into your cups you were.

Akri smiles, reminiscing.

"Sionnach and I commiserate as exiles that have found new purpose. He has her voices, and I have mine. It's nothing a few bottles can't sort out, eh?"

Akri turns to Khairam. "Again studying, Khairam. You've always been so serious, have you not? There is power and wealth in information."

How Akri knows Khairam: 1d100 ⇒ 53 Know each other by reputation only

"They say you are quite adept at exploration. I think you and I walk the same side of the street, Khairam. I've heard you have some experience with traps and alchemy, is this so? Such skills would be very helpful for our mission."

Akri is a Pahmet dwarf, a caste of dwarves that believe they are descended from a dwarven pharaoh, or were a slave of warrior caste in service to an ancient Osiriani pharaoh. He's a skilled tracker and trader, always searching for clues that tie his people to divinity or servitude. Info for you/anyone to use.

Just loving how this is shaping up. It's reading like Akri, who has the Osiriani ties in the first place, is pulling together this team of experts as some new parchment showing this unexplored tomb has come up. Therefore, the reputation of the investigator made him a good choice (and knowing each other by reputation makes the initial formal greeting make even more sense). Then the versatility of the medium, with whom the dwarf has history and experience, made sense as no one knows what we'll encounter. Finally, the bird (looking for a method to turn her/himself back to human) has the potential to gain something here and appeals to the dwarf for arcane casting. It's like Ocean's Eleven...but with only four...and swords...

Out of Anarchy Map

There's a knock on the door of the library, and in runs a teenage girl with a simple cotton dress and worn sandals. She places a small parcel on the table and quickly blurts out:

Osiriani:
"Message for Khairam. All fees paid."

She darts out as quickly as she came, slamming the door; the slapping of her sandals on stone echoes from the hall, then fades.

The package contains a slender wand (labeled as a wand of cure light wounds with 20 charges) and a letter addressed to Khairam. The seal on the letter is shaped like a mask, and magically glitters gold. The letter reads:

Khairam,
We assume you are aware that the winds in the desert have shifted, revealing a monumental discovery: a previously undiscovered pyramid, massive in size, and doubtless home to great mysteries and grave goods of a pharaoh past. The changing winds, we hope, are also a sign of our changing fortunes. We know you have plans to investigate this pyramid, and ask that you remember that we are very interested in your findings. We have already made a great deal of trade offers with local Pathfinder and Aspis osirionologists, and we trust that you will come through for us. We have included a small gift that we hope will provide succor against whatever is in that pyramid. We have also arranged for transportation: camels for you and your associates should arrive later in the evening on the day you receive this letter. We have put our faith in you. Do not disappoint.

Good health and good luck,
Your friends at The House of the Golden Mask

Take heart, friends! I plan to have the Gameplay thread up later tonight. Thank you all for your patience, and good luck on your journey!

How Khairam knows Eisalka 1d100 ⇒ 38 - Former Enemy

Khairam stops reading and looks at the he/she known as Sionnach, his lips curl as he slowly measures the reader up, not knowing whether Sionnaach deserves small measure of respect or he has met a rival. Only time will tell. He spits out, "Thank you Sionnach, most useful to know, you are a master of obscure symbols. Let's hope you offer more than the little frills around the edge of the lace."

With his attention taken from the document, Khairam looks once more at the man with the raven, his eyes open wide. "You...Eisalka, no wonder the man remains silent. So you have left those friends of yours. not surprised, their methods left a little to be desired. Or did you leave them to die in some pit somewhere! As for The Mask of Yishmet you stole from my expedition, I hope you made some profit, for the forgery you left in its place would not fool a blind donkey." Khairam finds it hard not to show his displeasure at being thrown together with Eisalka. "I trust you offer more than a thief if we must work together. I must trust to your skills, as much as Akri's, and his I have heard are known in the wild places of the desert." His eyes go from one to the other, reading all he can from each of his partners.

I will reply to the GMs post in gameplay, rather than start here in discussion, if that's OK with everyone.

So this animated pyramid is kind of a weird and potentially tough encounter. Feel free to discuss strategies in character in the gameplay thread, or ooc in the discussion. I can provide some hints and suggestions if you get stuck.

Which way would you like to go now?

M Dwarf (Pahmet) | HP: 28/28 |AC:17 (T 13 Fl 14) | CMB +6, CMD 19/15 Fl |F:+4, R:+5, W+3|Init: +4*(+2 Desert) | Perc:+8*(+2), SM +2 Ranger 3 |Speed 20 ft|

Nice map GM-MP! I'd already forgotten about the hidden doors.

Heal up and then what do y'all think?

Maybe clear the hidden-door rooms first, so if we need to make haste leaving the pyramid some hidden guardian doesn't squash us?

Man:
Male human Wizard 3 | AC 12 16, T 12, FF 10 14 | hp 11/20 | Fort +2, Ref +3, Will +2
Raven Wizard 3 with Human Familiar | AC 15, T 14, FF 13 | hp 6/10 | Fort +1, Ref +4, Will +5 | Percep +6 | Init +2

Sounds like a good plan to me. Hidden doors, ho!

Sounds good ... 1-left 2-right 1d2 ⇒ 1

I'm assuming Sionnach will heal you up with the wand, so just go ahead and roll for that. Just keep track of charges. :)

I'll try to get the next room up soon, or later tonight at the latest.

So I realized that, with my computer back, I could grab the map from the pdf. The overmap is replaced with a much better one now! :P

I also neglected to mention that the current room, in addition to having boats, also has passageway to the north. What would you all like to do now?

Aaaaand now there is a combat grid as well! Link at the top of the campaign page!

Eisalka: Let me know if you'd like a different image for Man. :)

Man:
Male human Wizard 3 | AC 12 16, T 12, FF 10 14 | hp 11/20 | Fort +2, Ref +3, Will +2
Raven Wizard 3 with Human Familiar | AC 15, T 14, FF 13 | hp 6/10 | Fort +1, Ref +4, Will +5 | Percep +6 | Init +2

LOL I'm totally happy with that picture. It is a good representation of how Eisalka thinks of him.

Hey y'all, I'm feeling sick tonight, and I don't think I'll be able to manage a post. Hopefully I'll be better by tomorrow. Thanks for your patience.

Happy holidays, Happy Christmas and good cheer for the New Year everyone.

My postings may get a little sporadic until after Christmas ... :)

Understandable. If anyone is planning on taking some time off for the holiday season, no worries, just let me know in the Discussion thread if you can! :)
