Ozzy and Mr. Blinky take the opportunity while Tartuk is casting his spell to try to skewer him.

Longspear AoO: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 2 = 71d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Ozzy and Mr. Blinky continue to attack the space where they saw the kobold, only a moment ago

Longspear: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 3 + 2 = 141d2 ⇒ 21d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Tartuk cast defensively, so as to not provoke an AOO. Or several, as the case may be.

The 1d2 rolls are in there. The high claw attack also had the only 1 on the 1d2.

Bright Awn finds Tartuk's shadow and stabs the air above it. From the looks of the shadow, the kobold dodged. Mr. Blinky goes for a more "just attack everywhere, he's gotta be somewhere" approach, and is rewarded.

Abaos stabs at where he hears kobold swearing. This increases the volume of the swearing, a positive feedback loop that Abaos is sure will work in the party's favor.

Chief Sootscale's personal guard attacks, and meets some success.

Round Three

You hear the words as tartuk casts another spell.
Casting Defensively: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32

While you've been fighting Tartuk, Tartuk's half dozen or so supporters outside the mine have been brawling with the other kobolds. (Even if the kobolds wanted to kill each other, they're sparsely armed and kobold defense is much better than kobold offense.) Hopelessly outnumbered, they had been having the snot beaten out of them. As of this round, however, the more perceptive of you might notice that Tartuk's supporters are moving twice as fast as the others, and fighting much more effectively. It's a much less one sided background fight than it was, and isn't looking to conclude itself until the PCs are done fighting the boss monster.

Chief Sootscale attacks with his spear and club, hoping that he'll hit with one of them.

Stabbity: 1d20 + 5 + 2 - 2 - 1 ⇒ (1) + 5 + 2 - 2 - 1 = 5 1d2 ⇒ 1
Wackawack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 - 2 - 1 ⇒ (12) + 5 + 2 - 2 - 1 = 16 1d2 ⇒ 2

He swings about wildly at an invisible target while blinded by the sun. It doesn't turn out great for him.

For those keeping score, we've seen him cast Mirror Image, Invisibility, and this new one sounds like Haste. We were told he was a "shaman", but none of these spells are on the shaman spell list. That and the strange comment about gnomes living as long as dragons ("we would rule the world"?) suggest that this guy isn't at all what he seems.

On a venn diagram, the overlap set of classes with all three spells on their class lists are bard, magus, medium, occultist, psychic, and sorcerer/wizard. I don't think the AP uses occult material, so that rules out half of those. Though not impossible, it's unusual for a bard or magus to have a familiar, which means he's most likely a wizard or arcane bloodline sorcerer, which in turn means that his hit dice aren't likely to be higher than a d6. Who knows what his CON modifier is, though. Kobolds have a racial penalty to CON, but if he's somehow a gnome in disguise, that would give him a racial bonus instead.

Character sheet

Btw, he doesn't fit the description of a magus at all. Bard is possible, especially with some weird archetype, but it seems unlikely. Either of those would make his hit die a d8 AND mean that he's at least level 7 (though we know he's not higher than 8). My money's or wizard/sorcerer though, which means that he could be level 6.

Character sheet

Not having a better plan, Ozzy and Mr. Blinky continue to blindly attack in the direction of the "kobold" "shaman's" voice.

Awn tries hard not to notice the tide of the battle turning, and renews his efforts...with the same amount of success - none.

Recently had a RP session with my 5 year old daughter as the GM. The players were myself (playing a hamster who could enlarge himself), my seven year old son (playing an elven Rogue), and my wife (playing a barbarian). So, my little girl kept throwing traps at us that we couldn’t beat, and only her DM-NPC could. Things like traps that included spikes in the air, where the only way past was to become a ghost. And when my hamster threatened to eat said DM-NPC she threatened to turn my PC into a “stupid stick.” And when we asked her if things could get any easier, she did an honest-to-god completely untrained, evil laugh. So while I like having hard to beat foes, it’s nice to have them in the ballpark.

@Bright Awn & Iorskan: Well, I said nothing you couldn't kill or escape from. High level caster who buffs himself and tries to engage in melee combat because he has no minions to bodyblock is an interesting encounter. A high level caster who just kills everyone with a fireball with enough d6s that saving throws won't even help, that's just an unfun TPK and a premature end to a campaign.

But a brown or owl bear is fine in my book, because even if it could kill the party without breaking a sweat, it doesn't have long range spells. The party wouldn't have to fight it, they could run if they wanted to, or run if they thought they could fight it but things got ugly. Basically, I think that PC deaths should be the PC's fault, not GM fiat.

Ozzy stabs Tartuk. "This," he says, "is getting old. Just let me refresh my mirror images, and I'll ARRGH!" he screams as Mr. Blinky reminds him why you shouldn't monolog in the middle of a fight.

Iorskan zeroes in on where Mr. Blinky caught Tartuk and directs his own attacks there.
Draconic ”He bleeds! He will die! He cannot hide! Hold ranks!”

Guthruc throws himself on the ground, catching, as he had hoped, something small and squishy beneath him. The squishy thing was holding something rather sharp, which wasn't altogether pleasent to fall on.

AoO: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

orc "If I knew the spell, I would have," Tartuk grunts, fully visible after taking his opportunistic attack. (Abaos still missed, though.)

Chief Sootscale's guard has wised up; even when they do hit they don't hurt. Instead they're going to aid another Bright Awn's attack, since he has both hands free and is carrying the second heaviest weapon.

I think that is 27 damage to a heavily wounded foe, so...

Blood was liberally spilled as the dragon ate Tartuk alive, and in full view of the tribe. It was, of course, impossible to finish the entire meal so quickly. But it was certainly fatal. At least, though, the meat was cooked.

Covered in blood, Iorskan roared as loud as he could Draconic”The traitor is dead! All hail Lord Iorskan! All hail his voice, Chief Sootscale! All hail Tribe Sootscale!”

But not level 1 anymore, I suspect...

Everyone gains 640 experience points! Welcome to level two, you've earned it. :)

Tartuk's supporters have all been knocked unconscious or pinned by the other kobolds. Zornesk takes up the cheer. "All hail Lord Iorskan!" He shouts in draconic, a language Abaos and perhaps some others have been studying of late. Nakpik gives her own cheer. "All hail tribe Sootscale!"

The two cheers catch on, some shouting the one, some shouting the other.

Chief Sootscale looks slightly put out, but more relieved. The dragon has left him in charge of his tribe, hopefully as more than a puppet ruler.

"Lord Iorskan," he bows low, "what should I do with Tartuk's-"

He's interrupted by Eadoo. "Victory radishes!" the kobold shouts, news that's taken roughly as well as learning that kobold sacrifices have been abolished.

Zornesk tries to stop the mad rush on the radish baskets ("Yes, celebratory radishes for the today's reduced price of a half silver!") but cannot stop the kobold swarm. He cries out in dismay, "Eadoo! You buffoon! Why would you do that?!"

Chief Sootscale apologizes briefly to Iorskan before running off. "Save a radish for Iorskan's voice, Chief Sootscale!"

Of course.

Ozzy finds a masterwork cold iron sickle, a wand of magic missile (31 charges), an amulet of natural armor +1, a feathered headress that increases the wearer's charisma by two, and 3 potions of Tartuk's own brewing; invisibility, false life, and haste.

EDIT

And a scroll of fly, and a now blood-soaked leather bound book written in Sylvan that does not detect as magical. The sickle is small sized.

Wow! Lvl 8! Good going, guys! Ya'll rocked!

Also, that feathered headress is going to be in high demand, I think. How are we determining loot? Needs we a party treasurer?

Abaos laughs as the evil kobold is thrown down, and Iorskan the lone challenger. He quickly runs over.

"So, does this make you king now, buddy?" he asks Iorskan, grinning widely.

Then, in draconic "King, you now, radish?" He's still learning Draconic....

He'll then go to help the swarm of kobolds control their victory radishes, all the while speaking in a horrible form of draconic.

Character sheet

Minimum caster level on those, or are they CL8 (or somewhere in between)?

I don't think we have anyone left who can use the wand, but as I mentioned in discussion, I'm planning to build my second familiar into a wand user. Potion of invisibility will be useful for Mr. Winky, too. I think I'm also the only one who can use the scroll of Fly. Ozzy could use the headress, but I suspect others will want it more, same for the amulet.

As I understand it, a potion of haste will only affect the imbiber, even though the spell affects multiple creatures. I'll get the spell at level 5, per the rules the DM laid out in recruitment. Until then, the potion probably should go to Guthruc, who would probably benefit most from an extra attack.

Unless someone has a better idea, I'm thinking that Ozzy should take the potion of false life, because if she falls unconscious, that also takes her eidolons out of the fight (it might also go to Mr. Blinky, since he isn't gaining any hitpoints this level).

Anything I missed?

I agree with both of those assessments. If you're asking me, I'd give Awn the Amulet, Iorskan the Headress. Just seems thematically appropriate- Awn can do cool tanky things, and the headress will really help Iorskan with his draconic stuff. Unless I'm wrong, in which case Abaos will take it.

Iorksan- Super Cool Headress
Awn- Amulet of Nat Armor +1
Ozzy- Scroll of Fly, Potion of Invisibility, Wand of Magic Missile
Guthruc- Potion of Haste

I'm actually thinking we should pass the headdress around. See discussion thread.

The kobolds celebrate well into the day, eating all of the radishes. ("We'll have to walk all the way out there and get more!" Zornesk bemoans.) Abaos comes across to the draconic speaking kobolds much the way Guthruc comes across to the common speaking humanoids: stupid, but endearing.

Tartuk's supporters claim, to a kobold, to have been under a magic spell. (The first one questioned about her current allegiances came up with the excuse, and everyone who came after used it as well.) Chief Sootscale's impulse is to banish them from all kobold lands forever, Nakpik thinks that there's no real harm in keeping them around without a god or shaman to order them and that not punishing them would set a difference between the old draconian rule of Tartuk and the new . . . draconic rule of Iorskan and his voice. Chief Sootscale asks why it is Nakpik is even part of the conversation, since she isn't actually part of the government and Nakpik says it's because she's the one who found Iorskan and Zornesk says that since Chief Sootscale tacitly approved the crowd eating all of the radishes he has to pay for them, but Zornesk is willing to give the chief a one time the-dragons-have-returned discount of all radishes at half off but the offer expires at the end of the day but the debt doesn't so he highly suggests making use of it. To everyone's suprise except Eadoo's (Eadoo wasn't paying attention) The Chief agrees and pays the radish-dragon-finders nearly one hundred gold pieces and declares them the Sootscale Tribe's "official finders" whose job it is to "find things both tasty and of strategic, military, or cultural importance to the Sootscale tribe."

Nakpik wants to organize an expedition to find "Oleg's Trading Post" which she's heard carries steel weapons, tasty food, and horses like the humans ride, all for sale if you have enough shinys. Chief Sootscale greenlights the project and Nakpik excitedly runs off to recruit people.

Iorskan lays down his new laws for the Sootscale Tribe. (Write me a constitution! Simple as the Ten Commandments or nuanced as the Code of Hammurabi, you decide.) He's quite popular with the kobolds, who want to hear all about his adventures throughout the world.

Upon learning that you're actually mostly diurnal, Chief Sootscale offers you Tartuk's old quarters, since they are large enough for all of you and he thinks it might rain tonight.

You've got a few places to go from here; I'd suggest speaking with the mite that's caged right outside the mine and checking out Tartuk's room before anything else. I think that Bright Awn speaks sylvan, so if someone hands that book to him he could translate it for you. And the loot still needs to be divided up, though we seem to have mostly come to a consensus there. More on that in the discussion thread.

Awn finds these kobolds eminently diverting, and tries to talk to them. With that failing magnificently, the woodborn laughs along with them and helps celebrate the downfall of the diabolist oppressor.

I've downloaded the PDF on to my phone, so I'll be able to post more often going forward!

Ozzy and Abaos make their way into the mine, walking over concealed pit traps (folding sections of the floor that are held up by ropes, arming them would be as simple as cutting the supports) and to Tartuk's room. The spacious cave was once Chief Sootscale's personal chamber, and he'll likely be moving back into our soon enough. Tartuk, however, decorated it himself.

The walls of this cavern are decorated by a rickety wooden frame formed from clean-cut branches lashed together with gut and twine. Banners cut from two-foot-wide strips of old blankets and horsehides hang from oor to ceiling, covering much of the walls. The sloppily painted banners bear dozens of primitive icons and mystic symbols. A large cauldron lled with bubbling red liquid boils in the center of the room. Black feathers carpet the floor.

Tartuk has had the kobolds pile all of their treasure (plus any new treasures they gain from their war against the mites) in a heap in the eastern alcove of his den. This mound consists of a huge amount of worthless shiny objects, such as quartz and mica crystals, bits of metal, broken weapons and armor, and other garbage. In addition, the pile contains 7,420 cp, 2,132 sp, 302 gp, and a soiled leather bag. Inside the bag are the treasures stolen from the mites (who stole from the bandits who stole from Oleg’s). The leather bag contains 321 sp, 249 gp, 13 pp, and two rings, one inset with a pearl and the other simply undecorated gold. Both of the rings have an inscription on the inside of the band; one is marked with a date some thirty three years ago this month, and the other simply says, "I love you."

Character sheet

Total: 1000.5gp

Edit: since no value is listed for the rings, i'm guessing they're story items of some sort...

Abaos will laugh, and look to Ozzy. "We're rich!" he'll yell. "We're rich we're rich we're rich we're rich!" he'll start laughing.

1000gp is a lot for a simple commoner, even one such as Abaos, who's probably had the equivalent of 1000gp at one time, then seen it all go away in the casinos and gambling dens.

He peers at the rings. "Man, these will fetch a hefty price at the markets. I wonder...."

Appraise: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

He attempts to remember the price of rings, even non- fancy rings, in the market.

Abaos isn't sure how much the rings are worth. (The DC for appraise is, apparently, always twenty.) He'd have to ask whoever he's selling them to for their appraisal.

Iorskan nodded approvingly. ”The start of a good hoard. I could certainly sleep on this. We should use it though to buy real steal weapons for the chief’s honor guard. It will be a symbol to cement our rule here. Some crossbows too. It will let the kobolds defend themselves, win the war with the mites, and be useful harassasers or spies for when we need them.”

Appraise take 20: 20 + 4 = 24
We can do that...right?

Sure, and if you can Abaos probably did too. The pearl ring is worth 250 gp, the plain gold one is worth 100 gp.

Good thinking Iorskan! I forgot you can take 20 Appraise.

Abaos studies the rings for a moment. "This one's got to be worth at least 100gp," he says, looking at the plain one "and this one's got to be, 200- 250ish gp. A good get for a proposal, or a wedding, or something," he finishes.

Abaos looks to Iorskan. "Actually," he says, "I've been thinking. What's the kobolds biggest problem? The war with the mites. What's Kressel and Happs' biggest problem? Food. Now, the kobolds here have food, and Happs' gang has plenty of experience with fighting, from raiding and such. Let's let Happs and Kressel take charge of the kobolds' defense, in exchange for food! They'll each benefit, and it'll keep Happs and gang from getting into trouble.... right? What do you think?" His face is one of eager excitement, like one who's spent a long time on something and finished, finding it satisfactory.

So, what's the party want to do next? If you want to hire the bandits, they're back at their camp. If you want spend some of your money, you'll probably want to hear back to Oleg's. If you want to go after the mites yourselves, they live within twenty miles of where you're standing right now. There's also the captive mite the kobolds have in a cage, if someone wants to talk to it. If someone gives me a heading, and someone else seconds it, I'll move the party that way!
