Afternoon one and all. Obidiah is in full swing... our very own Luddite-Solomon Kane meets Eli "There Will Be Blood" Sunday.
looking forward to this, great setting and mix of characters - will be mighty impressed if Obidiah lasts the course poor lad!
This is the idiom I'll be playing him by [with a dash of Northern English accent thrown in't'mix]:
They said Ned Ludd was an idiot boy
That all he could do was wreck and destroy,
He turned to his workmates and said: Death to Machines,
They tread on our future and they stamp on our dreams.

Aye - I'm looking forward to this one playing out :)
For my gnome's part, he is going to be a wide eyed curious about the world type at least to start with. The one that walks into a room with a button saying 'don't push' that shrugs his shoulders and gives it a press just to see what happens.

Folks just a heads up that I'm heading off for a week's vacation late tomorrow. Not 100% on how the hotels interwebs are [chat is they're slow and expensive] so can't guarentee I'll be able to post past tomorrow morning for 7 days. Hopefully I will.
EngineHouse please DMPC Obadiah as necessary. As a preacher he'll try and keep spirits up with quotes from the Parables of Erastil - He seems a decent marksman, and will use spells, abilities & skills as necessary to aid the group and the community at large.
Like I said hopefully will be around for the remainder of this combat, but if I'm off the grid you know why.
"In t'meantime lads - Erastil grant you gud 'unting!" :)

Now that we've finished unwrapping our undead presents, I have a couple of questions.
The reason I made Salvin a two-handed weapon fighter is because of my time in Pathfinder society. A different DM every session often meant that a different view of the rules could cause arguments or change how things worked. And there were some topics people never agreed on.
So, EngineHouse, I'd like to know how you rule divine magic and shields work together, especially since I'm almost wearing my intestines on the outside. :)
Many DMs would not allow someone to use shields and divine magic, or only certain shields and divine magic. And those that allowed some type of shield would not allow someone to use a sword and shield and lay on hands, even as a swift action for the caster. So that basically meant Paladins used two-handed weapons if they wanted to use all their class abilities in every game.
I know I should have asked earlier, but it was just something I got used to and at higher play the self-healing tended to take the sting out of things for those I saw playing Paladins.
Now I know there's no shop nearby, but depending on your answers I'll buy some new gear when I get the chance. I already avoided picking a weapon focus just in case things needed to change over time. The feats I have now will work just as well with a longsword.
Also, Obadiah, are you playing some variant I don't know of? You said something about preparing magics the next day; I thought Inquisitors were spontaneous casters.
Obadiah Hludham
Salvin: was under the impression that Inquistors are spontaneous casters for their orisons alone - just checked and your right man... damn that puts a spin on things :) Dunno why I offered healing - ignore my ramblings as Obadiah doesn't know any healing spells!
Back from holiday - think I left my brain in the Turkish sun! :)

A light shield 'lets you carry other items in that hand'. Lay on hands requires 'one free hand'. I am going to rule that a hand able to carry items is 'free' despite it not being able to wield a weapon. This also means you can deliver touch spells with a hand carrying a light shield. If you have a heavy shield or tower shield, however, you will have to sheath or drop it or your weapon to use lay on hands.

OK, so using a light shield and lay on hands is OK, and delivering touch spell is OK while using a light shield.
So, can you still cast a divine spell while using a sword and a light shield if we get high enough for me to cast spells?

Thats actually the official ruling on Lay on Hands anyway- that he can do it with a light shield on but nothing heavier. But not many PFS GM's are sure about it and make their own rulings.
I only know because I looked into it quite extensively for a Paladin in my PbP game; although I eventually awarded everyone a custom trait and with his came the ability to lay on hands without needing a hand free.

That all sounds good to me EngineHouse. I think I might switch to sword and board should we survive long enough to reach a friendly store. I'm not too sure the town will welcome us back depending on what happens along the way.
Hello lucker! Thanks for the information, but usually I just go with whatever rules the DM is using. I find characters tend to live longer that way. :)
Vhailor Falk
Enginehouse - just realized that I never filled in my languages for Vhailor!
With an Int of 17, one rank of Linguistics (that learns me two languages through Gift of Tongues) and Common + Gnomish + Sylvan to start I should have 8 languages?
Do you have any issues if I take Common, Gnomish, Sylvan, Draconic, Dwarven, Elven, Aklo, and Giant? - I'll skip Hallit just in case the Luddites want to talk behind my back ;)
Damrang Flintforge
So far the Luddites don't seem to have any qualms about telling you how much they hate technology. :D
I do love how this is turning out, should make for some fun tension as we make our way to the tower (assuming we defeat the constructs).
We may have to rest here a little longer than planned to get rid of the fatigued condition for everyone, I'd hate to face that tower in our current state.
Gregory Leichardt
Who says we're defeating the constructs? - I want to tame at least one to use as a makeshift pony.....
Or possibly some form of familiar? ;-)
Either way, I, too, could see the appeal :-)
@Obadiah: As long as we do not actively try to kill one another, I am happy to continue with it :-D
Vhailor Falk
Oooh - level up. I'm assuming that we can assume that the bump in power took place 'before' we prepared our armament of spells for the day?
Enginehouse: do you have any issues with the 'Haunted Fey Aspect' cantrip in UC? - basically just makes me look and sound 'like a bizarre, insane fey creature' and gives me DR1/cold iron against a single opponent until I take damage.
For my freebie spells I'll get Alarm and Hold Portal. Skills get a bump down the line.

Level 2:
+1 level of Inquisitor
+1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 hp
+1 BAB
+1 Fort, +1 Will
+1 rank in each of: Knowledge(Arcana, Dungeoneering, Engineering, Local, Nature, Religion, Planes), Perception
Cunning Initiative
Detect Alignment

+1 1st level spell slot
New Spells: Create Water, Comprehend Languages
I think that that about covers it ;-)

The back-and-forth has been fun. I like playing the paladin who just cares about crime, helping society and people instead of random bluster.
Level 2
+1 level of Paladin
+1 HP for favored class
+1d10 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
+1 BAB
+1 Fort +1 Will
+1 Diplomacy, Knowledge (religion), Knowledge (engineering)
Divine Grace (Su): Gain Charisma bonus (+2) on all saving throws.
Lay On Hands (Su): Heal wounds by touch (3) times a day for 1d6. This is a standard action unless used on self, in which case it is a swift action. Can also be used with a melee touch attack that doesn't provoke Attack of Opportunity to damage undead. Undead do not receive a saving throw against this damage.
Smite Evil (Su): Once per day as a swift action, the paladin chooses one target within sight to
smite. If this target is evil, the paladin adds his Charisma bonus (+2) to attack rolls and adds his paladin level (+2) to all damage rolls made against the target of her smite. If the target of smite evil is an outsider with the evil subtype, an evil-aligned dragon, or an undead creature, the bonus to damage on the first successful attack increases to 2 points of damage per level the paladin possesses. Regardless of the target, smite evil attacks automatically bypass any DR the creature might possess.
In addition, while smite evil is in effect, the paladin gains a deflection bonus equal to her Charisma modifier (+2) to her AC against attacks made by the target of the smite. If the paladin targets a creature that is not evil, the smite is wasted with no effect.
The smite evil effect remains until the target of the smite is dead or the next time the paladin rests and regains her uses of this ability.

Just a quick question about paladin's code so I don't break it by accident here:
The code requires a paladin "help those in need (provided they do not use the help for evil or chaotic ends), and punish those who harm or threaten innocents."
At the moment, I have no idea about the goals, intentions and such of the people involved in the little conflict we've just stumbled into. However, I assuming that "innocents" does not refer to soldiers, militiamen and the like who are actively engaged in hostilities.
Also, I can't see Salvin offering help to either group at the moment since he doesn't know what that help will be used for. In fact, so far as he can tell, the results of their conflict seem to be pretty chaotic at the very least.
Would you agree with that assessment, EngineHouse? Or would a paladin code require me to stop or prevent all ambushes I come across?
I don't want a lack of player knowledge to cause my character to do something he would not.
Obviously, if Salvin knows one side or the other is obviously good and needs to be helped, Salvin will break cover and try to help however he can.
EngineHouse
You can roll HP or take the average, alternating between rounding up on odd levels and rounding down on even levels. Needless to say, once you roll you can't then decide to take average (I've seen it tried in the past...)
Salvin, you are correct. I would hold that men who have gone armed into a warzone are not 'innocent' even if they fight for noble reasons. However, if they do you are obliged to side with them if they request it.
