From that cast it excludes Kieran, Ansha and Qhude as well as obviously N'bellocq. So Tebati, Jakob, Jeggare, Unwe, Albert, Nolwazi and Stephanie are affected.

If you want to affect Kieran, Qhude and Ansha you can stand up and 5 foot NW, just a thought :).

Round 3, Init. 7[ooc]Status: 19 hp; 17 ac; 20 cmd

Hearing the cries of more warriors, N'bellocq stops and turns to see a group of warriors making for the rear of the caravan. Bringing his bow to bear he releases two arrows.

Male Half-Elf

"And the odds just keep getting better," Kieran quips, the sarcasm behind his words clearly evident. At Tebati's insistence, the half-elf hesitates for but a moment before nodding in consent and sprinting towards the back of the caravan and N'bellocq's position.

Round 3

Running to as close to N'bellocq's position as possible. Hopefully I will be able to shoot at something, penalty or no penalty, on the next round. :-)

Your Humble Narrator

Ok, assuming Jakob casts as he specified- Tebati, Jakob, Jeggare, Unwe, Albert, Nolwazi and Stephanie are under the effects of Bless.

Jakob summons a blessing from nature herself which bolsters the front line and Tebati creates a 20 foot radius of mist, enveloping herself in the process of casting.

Kieran sprints towards N'bellocq, placing himself directly in the path of the group of Bandu warriors approaching from both the north and south. A clear look of respect is shot Kieran's way from several of the Bandu as it appears he plans to face just under a dozen warriors alone.

He will make a worthy sacrifice for Angazhan.

Ignoring the Bandu warriors approaching for now, N'bellocq aims and fires at the group of unarmoured tribesmen approaching the rear of the caravan. He nocks and fires two arrows in quick succession and manages to score solid hits to the chest of both of his targets and they crumple. The other three tribesmen's resolve seems to waver somewhat but they push on nevertheless towards the rear caravan.

"Just as I expected," Ansha says quietly, glancing over her shoulder at the cries of alarm further west in the caravan. "Well, there goes my view," she grouses to Jeggare as mists roil out from Tebati's position, obscuring her view of the easternmost Bandu raiders. Hopping off of the wagon, she moves toward the south a short distance. Crooking her delicate fingers in the gestures of a spell, she mouths a short incantation, and sends a bolt of jade magical force knifing away toward one of the Bandu dashing toward the rock outcropping nearby.

Move to J53, then cast Magic Missile at Warrior 5 in square Y59. She's retaining her scroll of Shield in hand.

Your Humble Narrator

The bolt of magical energy almost tears the warrior from his feet but the Bandu grimly marches through the pain.

Albert, Unwe and Stephanie stand in awe of the tactical use of magic for a moment before quickly moving over to the edge of the mist, using it as cover from the other assailants while they drop to kneeling positions once more and fire at the group moving to the cover of the boulders. Thenjiwee limps over, hoping that healing from Tebati will be forthcoming once she emerges from the conjured mist. Not yet within optimal range for their shortbows, Albert and Stephanie miss the advancing warriors while Unwe's arrow puts down the Bandu Ansha struck, and he falls from a combination of mundane and magical wounds.

Mengak and Nolwazi rush to assist Jakob and N'bellocq, their scale mail continuing to slow them down.

You could have mentioned it earlier miss Ansha... Jeggare grumbles as he continues to pick off the warriors on the slope with his crossbow. It now seems apparent that the caravan master is a veteran warrior, perhaps an ex-soldier even as he expertly reloads and fires with the same precision shooting. His bolt grazes the crown of the next Bandu he sets his aim to, the Bandu narrowly ducking underneath a kill shot.

Qhude:

The line of warriors obscured by the mist for everyone else is rapidly marching forwards, after putting away their slings and pulling nets as they move.

30 feet forward.

The warriors on the slope continue to return fire at Jeggare, but the pair seem destined to lose the ranged combat. The first sling bullet goes wide and Jeggare casually twists his body away from the second, seeing it coming and predicting its point of impact while the stone is still in the air.

The surviving three warriors from the ransacked wagon swiftly scrabble behind the rocks and out of sight of your force. The warriors attacking the centre of the caravan do something rather unexpected. As one, they hurl lit smokesticks in different directions, rapidly obscuring the east and west sides of the battle from one another. Although the northern section of smoke is a little more haphazard due to some botched throwing, it nevertheless obscures your split force from one another... The Bandu grin at the suddenly even more isolated looking Kieran, N'bellocq, Mengak and Nolwazi and the hirelings inside the two middle caravans scream in terror as they approach...

To cut down on metagame and to keep this an interesting part of the battle, please use spoilers to denote your actions and don't tell people whats happening to you, even in the OOC. Note that the large dead tree also effectively blocks line of sight so even Qhude can't see whats going on once the smoke lands.I suggest the following format, which I will use in my map updates (please only look at the map that applies to you at the start of next round, you can look at both spoilers this time only)-

West of the Wall of Smoke:

Kieran and N'bellocq Only use this but i'll describe the actions of NPC's on this side in this spoiler too.

East of the Wall of Smoke:

Ansha, Tebati, Jakob and Qhude use this, but i'll describe the actions of NPC's on this side in this spoiler too.

Note that in the map link above, the eastern Slaver and his men are obscured by Tebati's mist, as is Tebati herself. Thus, I have hidden their tokens but as Qhude can see them i'm telling him their locations in spoilers.

Also note- the smoke is treated as Fog Cloud- Link

Tebati, Kieran, N'bellocq and Jakob are up.

Female Human (Bonuwat) Cleric 4

DM:
The swirling mist mutes the sounds of battle coming from outside Tebati's cloud. Feeling as though she is walking in a dream, she turns and heads back toward where she left the caravan. After only a few steps, figures suddenly appear in the mist in front of her; after a moment of uncertainty, she recognizes them as the Sargavan soldiers....

5-foot step to the southwest. Seeing as how Tebati will be unaware that Kieran and N'bellocq have been cut off from the group until she gets out of the cloud, the soldiers on the edge have the chance to stop her and ask for healing before she finds out (free action to speak). Will they do so or let her become aware of the situation and hope she'll choose to stay and heal them anyway? If they don't interrupt her, I'll continue her 5-foot-step into a move action and go from there.

Female Human (Bonuwat) Cleric 4

East of the wall of smoke:
Tebati takes advantage of her relative safety within the cloud to draw her trident, not knowing what might be waiting when she clears the area of concealment. She emerges cautiously, a sheen of dampness on her skin and hair from her time in the mist, and is immediately startled by the thick smoke around the second wagon. "Kieran! Without waiting to see his attack's impact on his foes, the half-elf drops his hand crossbow and moves closer towards N'bellocq in an attempt to protect the other man's flank as best he can, drawing his curved sword as he does so.

Round 4

Standard action to attack with the hand crossbow, free action to let it fall to the ground and move action to move towards N'bellocq, effectively -hopefully, anyway- also putting the horses and/or wagon between himself and the northern attackers. Also, Kieran draws his sword as part of the move. I think all of the above is actually doable, but please correct me if I am wrong.

"Oh that's not good" The wounded Thenjiwee limps past. "And neither is that."

Jakob moves to Thenjiwee's side(Hard to see exact placement, moving to one space south of Thenjiwee.) the warrior may not even notice as Jakobs hand brushes the scale armor, his fingers carying no more force than a falling leaf. (Cast Cure Light Wounds, 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6) Thenjiwee does notice the effect of that fleeting touch. Tiny rootlets form at the edges of wounds and bind together pulling the torn flesh together. Bruses and bent ribs are quickly bound and supported by vines that grow from nowhere.

Your Humble Narrator

Jakob, did you miss the talk about keeping actions seperate via spoilers? Ah well, remember it for next round please :).

West of the Wall of Smoke:

Kieran manages to shoot a bolt at the closest warrior, the bolt grazing the warrior's hip. An arrow from N'bellocq follows, the projectile piercing the Bandu's leather armour and his chest along with it. A second arrow wounds another warrior beside him, who staggers but doesn't quite fall.

East of the Wall of Smoke:

Jakob rises to his feet and heals Thenjiwee. The Mwangi nods in gratitude to the nobleman as the power of nature knits his flesh together. The wounds he received are not healed fully but he seems eager to return to the fight.

Your Humble Narrator

West of the Wall of Smoke:

The three tribesman at the rear caravan climb inside, with large sacks ready to stuff anything valuable inside.

The five Bandu approaching from the south disappear into the smoke. The six moving in from the north split their force, four of them taking on Mengak and Nolwazi while the other two move to the rear of the middle caravan, ready to attack N'bellocq.

Brandishing their newly acquired Terbutje's, the veteran pair of soldiers each hack at one of their lesser armoured opponents, and in the furious exchange of sword against spear, the soldiers each vanquish one of their foes, Mengak grasping the spear's haft as he cuts a throat open with the cruel blade and Nolwazi side-stepping a lunge, stepping in close and running a Bandu through. The skirmish between the six men becomes a pair of duels; the soldiers hardened warriors in comparison to the young Bandu facing them seem to have the upper hand in their heavier armour but both are wounded...

Tebati, DC13 Perception:

Somewhere within the nearby vicinity the smoke you can hear the exertions and battle cries of warriors in battle.

Tebati, DC18 Perception:

Catching snippets of the triumphant cries, voices and howls of pain, you recognise that Mengak and Nolwazi each seem to have cut down a foe.

Eastenders:

Apparently having decent line of sight to the approaching warriors from the east, Albert takes advantage of Jakob's blessing to send an arrow flying into the enemy ranks, howling triumphantly as he apparently manages another successful shot. Jeggare himself re-asserts himself after the complete miss of his last shot and manages a masterful shot that sinks into the eye of one of the two remaining Bandu on the slope.

The leader of the Bandu warriors charging in from the east appears as he moves south-west into full view; his long Guisarme dripping with some kind of substance as he brandishes it viciously in preparation for a charge.

He is in M70, almost directly east of Ansha. Qhude, I have fixed your position on the map, seems I forgot to actually move you last round sorry. I have you in melee with two of the Bandu. Your up.

Your Humble Narrator

Eastsiders:

I'll DMPC Qhude this round.

Having ascended to striking distance and almost fallen off with a clumsy strike, Qhude re-asserts himself, smashing his rope into the face of the right hand warrior and stepping left to better access the two remaining Bandu. They snarl their defiance at him, but even though the high ground is theirs the pugilist's blood is up and his bestial grin unnerves the Bandu closest to him.

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21 Intimidate VS central warrior (success, 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 rounds)

Unwe, Stephanie and Thenjiwee launch another volley of arrows at the third warrior unengaged by Qhude- the former's arrows clattering off the rocks but Thenjiwee's catching the Bandu in the shoulder as he ducks behind cover. He crumples in pain and sags over the rock, bleeding profusely.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 Hit
1d6 ⇒ 5

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
1d6 ⇒ 3

The remaining warrior facing Qhude attacks in spite of his fear, trading sling for spear as he stabs out at him. Despite having the high ground, Qhude's ferocious, blood stained glare unnerves him and Qhude easily dodges the timid stab of the spear.

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

The full eastern attack force arrives behind the leader- seven Bandu warriors screaming profane curses to their Demon Lords and stroking sickening looking tribal fetishes for luck and fortune in battle. The last warrior on the slope loses his nerve in the face of Jeggare's steady massacre of his comrades; he flees out of sight to the north.

Mid-Round Map Update

West End Heroes:

The other warrior near N'bellocq steps closer and hurls a net over him, hoping to entangle him within it. His throw is true over the full distance of 10 feet and N'bellocq is too slow in getting out of the way as the net traps him.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 RTA VS N'bellocq (success)

I can't spoiler within a spoiler so relevant info is here. Note that the warrior has kept hold of the length of rope so an opposed strength check will be needed if trying to get further from him.

"An entangled creature takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls and a –4 penalty on Dexterity, can move at only half speed, and cannot charge or run. If you control the trailing rope by succeeding on an opposed Strength check while holding it, the entangled creature can move only within the limits that the rope allows. If the entangled creature attempts to cast a spell, it must make a concentration check with a DC of 15 + the spell's level or be unable to cast the spell.

An entangled creature can escape with a DC 20 Escape Artist check (a full-round action). The net has 5 hit points and can be burst with a DC 25 Strength check (also a full-round action). A net is useful only against creatures within one size category of you.

A net must be folded to be thrown effectively. The first time you throw your net in a fight, you make a normal ranged touch attack roll. After the net is unfolded, you take a –4 penalty on attack rolls with it. It takes 2 rounds for a proficient user to fold a net and twice that long for a non-proficient one to do so."

Nearby, Kieran finds himself almost completely surrounded by savage tribesmen who rush at him from the west- four of the wretches around him and with the wagon to his back. Although they wear no armour and seem to be commoners of the tribe; there are four of them...

The looters in the rear caravan have not yet emerged.

The other four tribesman make a beeline for the centre-rear caravan- three of them taking advantage of N'bellocq's entangled state to rush him with clubs- striking blows aimed to subdue, not kill. The fourth leaps up onto the edge of the wagon, and the cries of panic from inside make it clear his intention is to kidnap one of the hirelings...

Mengak and Nolwazi's foes redouble their efforts, hoping to subdue their tougher opponents quickly with brute force. Having both bested a Bandu already however, Mengak and Nolwazi are brimming with confidence and parry every swing and lunge of the Bandu's spears. Their confidence wavers as two of the Bandu that entered the smoke emerge from it and join the fray, however.

Movement still provokes AOO's as you don't have total concealment.

West Side:

Kieran cuts down one of the tribesman with ease with a dry remark and a flash of cold steel.

N'bellocq and Jakob still need to declare actions.

DM:
When the Bandu looms out of the smoke with his net, panic begins to rise in Tebati's mind; more than death itself, she fears enslavement. The desperate lunge with her trident unsuccessful, she gasps with relief when the man's throw misses badly, and confidence in her goddess' favor returns. "You die today," she repeats to the Bandu emphatically, gripping her piece of driftwood and calling on Shimye-Magalla to heal her lame foot. The haft of the spear whistles through the air as you flee, your flight too swift to be caught by the blow. You work your way out of the smoke and then back in once more- only to find caltrops once more blocking your path, difficult to spot in the fog cloud. There are no warriors behind them over here though...

Caltrops are on L29 and M29- you could squeeze through N29 to get around them though for double movement- or try and leap them at DC10 Acrobatics; unless there are more behind this row of them...

East Siders:

Assuming you have line of sight to the smoke, you see Tebati emerge back out on your side and move south, only to re-enter said smoke fifteen feet or so further south. She shouts something as she exits that only some of you make out.

Sorry on the delay, busy weekend.

But a question. Is the net a ranged attack that can be deflected? I have the Deflect Arrows feat that requires a free hand and knowledge of the incoming attack and automatically deflects one ranged attack a round.

if not here is the escape check

Your Humble Narrator

West End:

I've ummed and aahed about it some, but I think I will rule in favor of deflect being able to deflect nets- they ARE rather large, but they don't have much mass so I can see a deflection being possible.

However- seeing N'bellocq deflect the net, the tribesmen would not have gone for non-lethal damage- so the two hits I scored on you would still hit (no -4) and would be dealing lethal damage.

So consider that a pair of retcons- N'bellocq is thwacked by two clubs but not entangled.

East of the Smoke:

Jeggare takes a shot at the slaver with his heavy crossbow but despite Jakob's blessing the bolt imbeds itself into the mans armour, much to his visible relief. Albert retreats a little and takes another shot, positioning himself so he can cover Ansha. The slaver ducks under his hastily fired arrow, grinning at the success of his defences. The tall, lean and dangerous looking Bandu leader rushes Albert with his guisarme extended out almost recklessly in a powerful charge. The 8 foot long, hooked-bladed weapon tears cruelly through Alberts scale mail, ripping into vital organs with a blow so powerful it seems the armour was no proof against it. With a savage twist and a cry in Polyglot- I KILL HIM IN YOUR NAME, ANGAZHAN!, Albert crumples to the dirt, blood filling up in his mouth and pouring all over the road from the horrific chest wound; an expression of sheer shock and horror fixed on his face as his eyes close...

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14 Jeggare miss

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 Albert miss

1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30 Crit confirm on Albert!
2d4 + 5 ⇒ (4, 4) + 5 = 13

Please note- the Guisarme is a reach weapon and thus threatens squares two squares away from the slaver (including diagonals).

Looking on in horror, Stephanie screams in anguish and fury as her commanding officer is brutally wounded, perhaps even killed. A gasp of shock is caught within Unwe's throat and Thenjiwee's face takes on a grim countenance. Throwing caution to the wind, the three rush to stand protectively in front of their fallen leader- but the slaver lashes out at each of them as they move into position, his movements skillful, powerful and incredibly quick. His hooked blade catches each of them as they simultaneously rush him, and as he spins and whirls his polearm in dizzying motions each soldier is tripped, falling to the ground. The three scramble to their feet and even the slaver's swiftness isn't enough to land a blow as they rise, but they have yet to reach Albert...

Although the slaver only truly bought himself some time with his polearm prowess, its enough. His warriors rush to support him in a tight cluster, none of them understanding that they are playing into Ansha's mgic-weaving hands. Two of them rush Thenjiwee and in his dazed state both spears being jabbed at him pierce his feeble guard, adding chest wounds to the damage already left part-healed by Jakob.

Fighting desperately back to back against overwhelming odds once more, Mengak and Nolwazi quick-step north in an attempt to avoid being flanked, and make quick, decisive strikes with their respective Terbutje, seeking to kill the Bandu as quickly as possible. Their vicious swords once again strike true, the more heavily wounded Mengak dispatching another Bandu with a cunning riposte after narrowly evading a spear and Nolwazi relentlessly attacking with vertical, shoulder led hacking motions that eventually break through his foe's guard and armour, leaving a brutal gash on the Bandu's shoulder.

Stay in the wagon, your no better off out here!

a few begin to trickle out of the opening...

Marked with yellow halos.

Meanwhile, the Bandu tribesman terrorising them from the inside has an unconcious woman, one of the cooks, hoisted over his shoulder as he exits the wagon and begins to make off with her to the north.

Two Bandu warriors emerge from the smoke, limping heavily towards the middle-front wagon and hoisting themselves into the wagon with some difficulty, ignoring Mengak and Nolwazi's fight nearby.

The three warriors left facing Mengak and Nolwazi abandon any attempt at trying to knock them out as they realise they are fighting for their lives against hardened veterans! Jabbing desperately with their spears and struggling in such close quarter fighting against blades, the Bandu continue to struggle against the powerful combination of Mengak's smooth, classical swordplay and Nolwazi's tribal savagery!

Kieran continues to be assaulted by the tribesmen's clubs; and after his cool dispatch of one of their number with a single swipe, they show little interest in hitting him softly. One sneaks around Kieran to flank him and the three strike in a frantic flurry of unskilled bludgeoning. Nevertheless, unskilled or not three clubs at once from different angles is a lot for a man to deal with with just one blade. Kieran parries one club but the strength of the blow catches him off guard, leaving him open to be bashed by the two others!
