Zamanda sees that people are listening to the idiot, so well back from the fight she casts a spell and then steps up on a convenient soapbox and starts talking to the crowd, explaining how Trifaccia is no hero, and that he in fact hired the "troublemakers" ahead of time in every case so that he could show up and pretend to save everyone, and that he had been hiding behind that chimney the whole time, letting the bad guys destroy things, and the only reason he came out is because he was spotted, and that he must be part of some conspiracy against the city which is making everyone's lives harder, and why should people put up with antics like that?

She continues her rant against false heroes, saying that no one could take Blackjack's place, and that only a criminal like Trifaccia would try. ... Once she thinks she has a good following, she starts chanting "Down with Trifaccia" in between additional rants, reinforcing and expounding at length about how evil Trifaccia is to try to pull the wool over the eyes of the good people of Korvosa...

(Spell: Compelling Rant)

Listeners with at least 5 HD can attempt a DC 19 Will Save to negate the effects, but otherwise everyone within 230 feet is affected.

Wisdom Drain (Zamanda): 1d4 ⇒ 1

Wisdom Damage (Audience): 1d6 ⇒ 2

Let's go with the -4 penalty on attack rolls, saves, ability checks, and skill checks for the curse.

Ilsa can't help but gasp as the veteran swordsman strikes her in the chest. She has faced few, if any, as skilled. She holds a hand to her breast and it comes away wet with blood.

And yet--the corner of her mouth raises in a smirk when he disappears.

"Where are you running to, Trifaccia?" she taunts loudly. "Are you conceding defeat? I sense your resolve is slipping."

When he disappears, Ilsa knows exactly what he has done. Somehow, her eyes even track exactly where he has gone as if she is seeing with some preternatural sight.

"Come back when you want to finish this," she muses, looking awfully close to straight at him. "I'll be waiting right here."

She takes a pace away from him, trying to avoid his deadly blades, and casts a spell to produce a bank of thin, eerie mist.

Cast Mind Fog (DC 25 Will). Prior to casting, I'll take a 5' step away from the square I think he's in.

Hypnotic Stare target: -4 Will, -3 attack rolls, -3 damage, -3 DC of spells, spell-like abilities and spell resistance (if demoralized, additional –2 attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks). It looks like he's got -4 Will from hypnotic stare, Shaken, Sickened, and has the -4 from Bestow Curse on top of all of it. Let's see if we can get Mind Fog on him, too. :)

As the spell completes, Triffacia pops up, visible once again "Stop looking at me like that b!$&*! I cannot stand it!" you all notice a tingle of desperation in his voice suggesting his will to fight is quickly wearing down.

He closes his hand in a fist and starts to raise the arm, flames quickly raising from the ground and surrounding Ilsa in a circle of fire.

Round 4: Ilsa is up!

[CAMPAIGN COMPLETE: BECAME KALEM LIGHTSWORN]

Kalem:

1d20 ⇒ 20
!!!

With his preparations complete, Kalem began to look around for a way out of his current location. If he was going to be stuck there for all eternity, then it would not be in the same spot. All he had to do was make his way out...

Iron Gods: Iron maps;

Kalem:

Kalem thinks he is ready, he looks up, and with his first step he only falls down as the ground breaks and he falls on a rocky path in a lower level. He looks around and starts walking, but many paths open in front of him. When he is desperate and almost to give up, he spots a halfling with curly hair, a freckled face, and a tattered red and green coat held together by buttons calling him from one of the paths "C'mon my friend, this way! There are battles to be held!"

The redheaded halfling makes another sign for Kalem to approach, and disappears coming into the branch where she was standing.

[CAMPAIGN COMPLETE: BECAME KALEM LIGHTSWORN]

Kalem:

Kalem shrugged. A demon in disguise, no doubt. But one that would regret it's ruse soon once the inevitable sudden betrayal happened. The tiefling walked after the "halfling" his scythe at the ready, wondering how long his afterlife would last.

Iron Gods: Iron maps;

Kalem:

Kalem starts to follow the apparent halfling. The redheaded disappears here and there taking different branch tunnels on this hell of a maze.

Every now and then, the halfling looks back at Kalem and offers him a reckless smile.

On one of the turns he stumbles with the halfling who is standing atop a well with bubbling lava on its depths. The halfling looks at the tiefling with that cocky-reckless smile "We have arrived" she grasps the tiefling's arm, and Kalem feels a divine strength pulling him into the well.

Despite all his mighty force, it is night to fight the halfling, she is way stronger than Kalem, and so, she pushes him into the hole jumping with him to the depths.

Kalem splashes against the lava, it burns like hell.

A rift opens in the middle of the street and a stream of lava is ejected, with Kalem rolling out among it. As the rift closes you spot at the other side a halfling with curly hair, a freckled face, and a tattered red and green coat held together by buttons. With the same loud sound with which it appeared, the rift disappears in less than a second taking the halfling with it.

K. religion DC 15:

You recognize the halfling as Chaldira Zuzaristan, goddess of Battle, Luck and Mischief, known to charge into battles without much planning.

It is said those in Chaldira's favor experience exceptionally good luck and an extraordinary ability to avoid harm in reckless endeavors.

Kalem sees a bank of fog in the middle of the street, and a jet of flames blocking the passage to the west.

To the east, Zamanda and Laori are standing, while Bashiel is standing in the roof of a building. Many people are looking through the windows, but there is no trace of the thugs or Ilsa.

"Kalem!!!!" Laori runs towards the tiefling, helping him to stand up and pointing towards the flames "Ilsa is fighting against Trifaccia! He has promised to leave the city if she wins" she hugs the tiefling "I was worried, where have you been?"

Slowly, the streets of Korvosa start to become covered by cinders and streams of lava as Kalem's Vision of Hell comes back into effect.
Zamanda and Laori would need to save here against shaken, but we would not bother here as it would have no impact I think

Kalem hugged Laori with feeling, in equal part relief and to see if she was real. ”The abyss.” He said. ”That bastard sent me to the abyss!” The fear and relief began to give way to anger, which he tried to push down. ”Did you see a halfling? Curly hair, freckles, and a tattered red and green coat hung together by buttons? She got me out of there. Took me to a portal that brought me back. But I don’t see her anywhere…”

Ilsa winces as the fire scorches her. Flame licks at her as she exits the circle of fire, back toward the safety of her eerie bank of light fog. Her cloak still smolders as she re-establishes her terrible gaze on the man, with the reds and oranges from the conflagration mirrored in her eyes.

But her voice sounds triumphant as she addresses Trifaccia.

... What a buffoon, am I right? Raising his voice as though he were a whiny child, demanding your attention, when you all can see through him clear as day. I mean, you're Korvosans. We live in a city of intrigue and wonder. You aren't the gullible worms that he expects you to be. YOU know that he is a fraud and a cheat, and nothing even approaching a hero. He's not a native Korvosan, or even someone we've happily adopted into our community. He's an outsider, a nothing. Fighting against a true native who is just trying to defend the city. Pah. Can you believe the audacity of that foreign idiot, trying to come in here and dupe Korvosans? Trying to convince you that he is saving you from pretend revolutionaries that HE hired? He likely works for the same person that was spreading disease through the city, the same person who has been trying to undermine the city and destroy free trade, and grind hardworking citizen's faces in the mud. A madman, certainly, believing that he can take the place of true heroes like Blackjack and try to turn you all into compliant little sheep, listening to everything he says, but insulting you to the core with every word. Down with Trifaccia and everyone with a similar intent to harm hardworking Korvosan citizens! We won't stand for this sort of behavior, will we? Tell him how you feel! Show him how you feel! ... BOO, Trifaccia. Boo! Poor performance. Get off the stage and let someone with some talent stand up instead, you useless actor wannabe! Fake! Fraud! Utter moron. Kalem looked on in confusion. "Why is Ilsa fighting alone?" He asked. "Shouldn't we go and help her? I could fly up there right now, you know. Put my scythe into the back of his head while he's distracted." Looking around in confusion he wondered if the rest of the group was somehow enthralled. Or in Zamanda's case, under some sort of magically induced madness, given how she wouldn't stop ranting and rambling.

Many images come back at Kalem. Suddenly he realizes why the halfling felt that familiar before. Images of Marcus death and the terror, depression and obsession that followed. The way Gaedren's orphans bullied him. His first steps in the streets. The halfling was there. He thought it was just an imaginary friend out of his loneliness and depression. Forgetting the hellscape vista he had conjured, the magical duel dominating the streets, even his own sense of balance, Kalem sunk to his knees with a stunned expression on his face. Kneeling at Laori's feet, he raised a shaky hand to his head while he stared through the ground and into the void. "What...?" He said, to nobody in particular. "How...?" He added. So many years of being alone. Of being miserable. Of detesting the world and everyone in it, even while he put on a smiling face. So many long years. And here was proof that it was all a lie. That he had never actually been alone. That there had always been someone watching over him. Before that moment he had never really thought about the Gods, assuming that they were so far above mere mortals that it was pointless to even think about them. Let alone worship them. But here was undeniable evidence that one had been present in his life for far longer than he had ever known. He also wondered, at that moment, about the source of his strength. He knew that he had infernal blood. The proof was right there in his skin and his eyes. But if she was there, then how much of that was true? It also occurred to him that if Chalidra was present in his life, then was she alone? The misfortune. The anger. The dark thoughts that would creep in. How much was him? How much of what he had done, or what had happened to him, had been natural occurrences and how much had been divine? He had surely enough gone to the abyss...or hell. He still didn't know the difference. But regardless, something there had been coming for him, and she had saved him from it.

There were so many questions to process. "Chalidra." He said, as if he was tasting the word. Battle? That was certainly something he was good at, and in truth enjoyed. Luck? As unfortunate as his life was, he lived where others did not due to luck. Mischief? Not exactly the word he would have used to describe himself. But as a semi-reformed con-artist who had lived on the tip of the tongue, he supposed that he fell into that as well. Especially as he never chose marks who looked like they couldn't afford it. And reckless endeavors? He couldn't think of a single endeavor that wasn't reckless.

Getting himself together he looked at Laori. "Is this how the Gods act?" Putting his hand over hers he continued "Is it real? Do I owe her now? How does any of this work?"

Zamanda continues her rant.

... and a coward, it turns out! Making Ilsa go in after him... hiding away from you after trying to convince you he is a hero. Such audacity and villany. Booo, Trifaccia! Boooo! Get out of our city--we don't want you here! Hire people to do damage and harm others and then try to take credit for driving them away? The last thing we need around here is a fake hero. Go back to wherever you came from. Korvosa doesn't need anymore villains! ...

Ilsa curses softly as she sees he is no longer there--or at least not visible to her.

Withdrawing from the flames, she raises her hands to the crowd.

"He is gone--he is no hero! He's a fraud!" she exclaims. "He's working with the thugs! He has a deal with them to drive them off and make it look like he's the force of order. But it's a lie!"

Still wary that he may be around, she draws her scroll of see invisibility.

Can I see Bashiel taking off after him? Or anyone want to point me in the right direction if I can't see that?

She prepares a scroll to see the invisible and shouts back to the crowd.

There is a rumble all through the street, until finally most of the public starts to cheer up the great warrior that defeated the false Trifaccia!

Eventually the wall of fire disappears, leaving just the scorching marks of the burn in the ground, and a broken stone here and there due to the extreme heat.

But Trifaccia does not return, and so Ilsa is proclaimed winner of the duel by public acclamation!

With the sounds of the crowd cheering for the winner of the duel, Bashiel nods affirmatively. He rises up above the rooftops to beckon the rest of the team, then returns to following Trifaccia. For as much as the fellow made this out to be an honorable duel, Bashiel was skeptical that Trifaccia would honor the terms and leave the city.

I'm assuming I can follow him visually, but here's a perception if he starts trying to sneak about.

Zamanda stops her spell, which continues for a short time after she stops speaking, and she joins in the cheering for Ilsa... but wonders where Trifaccia is. If they have to go through all of this again, it is going to be really annoying.

She goes over and starts looting the body of the woman she killed, but tries to make it look like respectfully preparing the body for transport to the morgue, so as not to offend the crowd.

She also wonders who was granting the group's wishes. Was Trifaccia some sort of genie?

Iron Gods: Iron maps;

K. planes DC 18:

You bind all the hints to deduce who, or better said, what, this Trifaccia is:
- not humanoid
- able to shapeshift to human or at least resemble one
- fire user
- immune to fire
- able to concede wishes

And come up to the conclusion he could be an efreeti or some other kind of fire genie. A much powerful and well trained one at the least.

You know efreetis are LE, and thus, he is most probably going to honor his promise of not returning to Korvosa, but guard a deep hate for Ilsa.

Zamanda takes the body of the fallen woman. Others are still on the ground, scorched by Laori's column of fire.

Slowly, the people start to leave the cheering and return to their everyday doings. At the least, they will have something to talk about for the next days, probably months, as they assisted to the undeniable defeat of Trifaccia, the Queen's conspirator to taint the image of the Rebellion, as Zamanda has well implanted in their vision of the event.

Bashiel:

You follow Trifaccia up to the piers. There, he loses invisibility and takes a ferry to cross the river and abandon Korvosa.

For stirring the idea the Queen is using means to taint the image of the Rebellion, you have earned 1 Rebellion Point.

She circles up with her companions again, making sure to hug Kalem. "I'm glad you're back--where did you go? Also, where's Bashiel?"

She goes on to explain what she has found out about the man behind the mask. "All I can tell you, after probing his mind repeatedly, is that he's no man. Or even a humanoid, for that matter. I couldn't take control of his mind, even though I brutally punished him. He won't forget me, I'm sure, and I've left him with some mental scars that he can't heal without powerful magic."

After explaining what she knows, she says "I'd imagine we've done enough to stop him for now. I think our next step is to think about how to infiltrate the castle."

Psychic Surgery:
Psychic surgery cures the target of all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma damage and restores all points permanently drained from the target’s Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. It also eliminates all ongoing insanity, confusion, and fear effects. Psychic surgery can also remove other mental afflictions, including enchantment spells and abilities, and even instantaneous effects, but in this case, if dispel magic couldn’t remove the effect, psychic surgery works only if the spell level or equivalent spell level of the effect was 6th level or lower. Psychic surgery removes all effects magically altering the target’s memory, even instantaneous effects, and it can restore a memory to perfect clarity like the second use of modify memory.

For a moment Kalem was about to offer a witty(?) barb along the lines of it being impossible to repair what was never there, but decided that it was a bad idea to distract someone performing psychic surgery. Once Zamanda is feeling better, Bashiel broaches the topic of how to approach the castle. "Is there a way we could all turn invisible, and then fly to one of the towers?" (Could get a scroll of invisibility sphere, for example) "I don't know much about dragons, but I'd assume any dragons would be somewhere with large enough openings to fly out, and the tops of the towers could be that."

"Maybe we also just need to do an initial scouting of it, just to see where the guards are concentrated. Even one person alone could do that while invisible."

Iron Gods: Iron maps;

"No dragon has been seen in Korvosa. At least on centuries" sentences d'Bear.

Reviewing Neolandus' maps, you also notice there is no large opening designed for a dragon to take off.

Whatever you decide though, it is thrown to the bin by the sudden turn of events. As soon as you emerge to the surface in order to scout, get more information, resupply or just rest, you find images of true panic in the streets.

People is running away from Castle Korvosa carrying whatever small belongings they had in their hands at the time. When you try to stop some citizens, they look at you with wide eyes full of fear "A dragon! A huge black dragon!" then continue running in the opposite direction.

K. arcana DC 21:

Of course, you know some dragons are quite unique, and no dragon is equal to any other in essence.

Quickly you run towards the danger following the flow of panicking people. Soon enough, you find yourselves in the surroundings of the pyramid fortress. A huge black dragon is flapping its wings flying well away from spell reach. A gray maiden is riding the dragon in full armor.

Sense Motive DC 20:

You find it awkward the dragon is flying that high. At that distance it is difficult to find whatever they are trying to search for. It seems more as if they were trying to display themselves.

K. nobility DC 15:

You do recognize the emblems in the maiden's armor, and specially the crest on the top of her helmet, as those of Ileosa's personal bodyguard: Sabina Merryn

K. nobility or K. local DC 20

Spoiler:

You do also know Sabina was once the protege of the famed weaponmaster Vencarlo Orisini, but left the school under dubious circumstances after a bitter duel with her former teacher.

Since her departure, she found her way into the Korvosan Guard. Her skills led to a swift rise through the ranks, and her ferocity in battle and her gothic beauty quickly caught Ileosa’s eye. The queen requested Sabina be discharged from the Guard, then quickly reassigned her to her current role as royal bodyguard, handmaiden, and rumor says, eventually lover. Whatever Sabina’s actual relationship with Ileosa, she is rarely seen far from the queen’s side.

I disagree. We should fight it now... we know where it is, and it is scaring the citizens. This is exactly what could turn the tide of the rebellion. Try not to kill the rider though... that's Sabina Merryn (Merrin from the list), Ileosa's personal bodyguard and one of the Gray Maiden leaders. We need to talk to her.

Zamanda whispers "I swear to slay my target" because if you can't use an oath on a dragon, then what good is an oath?

Then she casts gravity bow.

Exactly how far away is it? With Arcane Archer distance enhancements my range increments are 220 feet each (doubled from normal), so max bow range is 2200 feet, although that would be -18 for range at that point. Much better if it were closer, but if Zamanda thinks she has a shot (without activating the fly spell in her armor), she is going to take it.

As the others talked Kalem listened and then sighed. "Chalidra watches over me." He said, as he took out his scythe. The bloodrager rolled his shoulders, cracked his neck, and then knelt down. One hand was placed on the ground, the other held his scythe out to the side. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and with a reckless endeavor in mind opened his eyes once more. They glowed with the inner light which showed that he was channeling the power within him. A pair of demonic wings formed on his back as he launched himself into the air, heading straight for the dragon.

Let's get this started!:

Rage, with shield cast to protect himself should the dragon survive

CHARGE! Surprise round? Because how would the dragon ever imagine that this was coming?: 1d1d20 + 34 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 34 + 2 = 55

Intimidate from conugon smash: 1d20 + 30 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 30 - 4 = 43

Total Damage with fire: 41 + 122 + 9 = 172

He shot up with incredible speed, his wings pushing him forward like a lance of fire. Flames erupted from his scythe as he went straight for the dragon, his eyes locked upon it. This wasn't the first dragon that they had fought, and as such he had no fear of the beast. If Zamanda wanted to make a scene, then a scene he would make. Chalidra was with him, he was sure. All he had to do was not think about anything besides the dragon's neck...he felt the impact of his warscythe hitting scale and continued to push up, straining to keep a hold onto his weapon. What mattered was momentum, and having enough strength to make the most use of it. All he had to do was keep going and to keep a hold on the weapon. He knew that if he could just endure for those few moments, then the city would have a headless dragon to talk about.

Round 1: Kalem, Laori, Bashiel, Zamanda, Sabina and dragon, Ilsa

Bashiel and Zamanda can still take a standard action for their surprise round.
Kalem, Bashiel and Zamanda can take a full round for their round 1

As there is no map, and flying combat does not deal well with maps anyway, I think we will try to run this one as theater of the mind. Dragon and knight are 300' away from you, and flying 200' over the streets, that is all you should need to know for this one.

[CAMPAIGN COMPLETE: BECAME KALEM LIGHTSWORN]

The charge…wasn’t that. The dragon was too far away. So Kalem continued to fly…

Double move
