The year is 4700 AR. The small Varisian village of Briston has celebrated its freedom from Korvosan martial law for exactly a decade, and things finally seem to have returned to normal. Only a few locals remain who remember the ill-fated rebellion of Briston, and the village has striven to move past its darkened history. However--caught between the infamously dangerous Ashwood forest, the distant shadows of the mysterious Fenwood mountains, and the ever-scrutinous eye of Korvosan political intrigues--Briston’s days of peace are soon coming to an end.
This is a homebrew Pathfinder campaign based, at least to begin with, out of the small village of Briston, Varisia. I’ll be honest: I have an overall idea of where this campaign should be going, but a lot of the story will be reactionary based on your backstories and roleplaying, and things may become pretty improvised. Therefore, most of what I’ll be looking at will be your character backstory and roleplaying opportunities.
Now, I’ll tell you a little bit about your potential GM before you consider submitting a character: in my real life I am currently in a strange state of living. I have been traveling around Europe for 3 and a half months now, and I move from place to place usually every week or so--sometimes I stay more and sometimes less time, but internet is not 100% guaranteed on a day-by-day basis. I will try to warn players when I might disappear for a day or two or even more, but this campaign will probably be slightly slower than most other PbPs because of my current nomadic lifestyle. Before I started traveling, I was very active as a player in several PbPs, but I dropped them because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to keep up. Now, I am playing in one slow-paced PbP and I decided that, instead of trying to find another one that would tolerate my occasional disappearances, I would just begin my own and dedicate most of my PF time to that.
- All Paizo races are allowed, but I should warn you that, without a good and convincing backstory, you may find that your Drow/Aasimar/Dhampir or what have you will be near the bottom of my list.
- Good characters recommended. If you want to play an evil character, it may be difficult depending on the party’s makeup, and I expect party cohesion to be at the top of everyone’s list. An evil character won’t be easily accepted.
- 15 point buy
- 2 traits
- Roll for starting gold
- If you have an idea that you like but need to bend some rules to make it happen, feel free to talk to me about it and we can try to figure something out.
Feel free to use any official Paizo sources; 3rd party material will have to be double checked by me and I’m usually a little hesitant to use it. With the official Paizo books you should have plenty of options. Also, because I am living out of a backpack with nothing more than a laptop and some clothes, I am using www.d20pfsrd.com and the Pathfinder Wikia as all of my sources, and the rest (mostly campaign setting) I am homebrewing completely. Therefore, whatever you use should be referenced on SRD for my viewing.
Fishermen generally work close to the shore, and many of them live in the Lakeside -- immigrants to the area often come to find work fishing in the bountiful lake. Farmers often live just outside the village among their fields, but some live in town and make the trip out to their lands in the surrounding area when they go to work. Traders swing through the town on a regular basis, but the village has grown large enough that most mundane objects one could ever desire can be found there. Magic is a rare and expensive commodity in Biston--sometimes gypies pass through the town with minor magic items, but only the most accomplished Biston citizens can actually afford anything magical.
The town’s blacksmith, a talented young prodigy named Selyna Duntherhall, has her business in the tunnels. The best and most popular general store is owned by Sryan Farristil; he is the head of the Farristil family, and though they live in the Tunnels District, Syran has recently moved his store down to the Lakeside to appeal to newer citizens. There are three taverns in Biston. The oldest, Hunter’s Cove, is in the Tunnels District; they have very few beds and rooms for lodging, but it is higher quality than the other inns in town, and has become much more expensive. The most popular tavern by far is the Stomping Squat, run by the aging and charismatic Danny Nemuria; it is set up on a hill next to the cliffs near the Tunnels District, slightly away from the downtown Lakeside because of how rowdy it often gets each night. Finally, the shadier spot in Biston is Crossroads. The drinks are cheap and bad, the service is questionable, but everyone knows that you mind your own business while you’re there, unless you want trouble. There is one church in BIston, in the center of Lakeside, and it is dedicated to Abadar (the primary deity of Korvosa). However, the majority of the townsfolk worship Old Deadeye, thus there are a few shrines to Erastil scattered about the village, each one maintained by a communal effort of his most faithful worshipers.
And so, goodluck to everybody who applies, and I hope that we can all have a fun time gaming together in the near future. I look forward to reading your submissions, and please please please feel free to ask me any questions you may have!

For your consideration: Calon Nilmalad, Elven Wizard (transmuter). Link has stats, and as for backstory, this is what I had come up with for another campaign, I can see if maybe I could tie it in a little more to this area. Perhaps he is hunting the person he suspects of selling his family out, and has tracked them to Briston?
Description: Tall and thin as a reed with dark brown hair and tanned skin, Calon's most outstanding feature are his piercing sky blue eyes. He shuns traditional wizards robes for more functional, loose explorer's clothes. He tends to move with a flowing grace, and becomes very distracted when he encounters a new creature, seeking to find out everything about it.
Calon's family lived in Sevenarches long before the humans came, and they refused to leave just because of these short-lived beings. Although no elves are allowed into the city, there are a few scattered families that have stayed behind, hiding in nearby areas and hoping one day to be allowed (or to force...) their way back into the city. Calon grew up in a forest near Sevenarches with his parents who lived off the land. They never had much when he was growing up, but they survived. Calon was always very frail but quick, and it became apparent as he was growing up that he had a talent for magic. His father was a ranger who trained him as best he could to fight, but his mother wanted to nurture his natural talents. She could see that he did not take to the divine worship that gave her power, and so she managed to scrape together enough rare components to bribe a human wizard named Alain from a town across the border from Sevenarches into accepting him as a student.
Calon soon found a love of transformation spells. The ability to become anything he wanted to be, to gain the abilities of forest creatures! To fly as an eagle or become strong and tough as a bear, that was his dream. It was on an expedition to a college where his teacher was a guest speaker that he met Professor Lorrimor. They hit it off immediately, the professor's theories on Intermediary Incomplete Transmogrifications fascinated the young elf. They talked on and off for the entire week of the conference, and Calon wrote to the professor with questions and details of his studies for the next couple of years.
Shortly after he finished his apprenticeship (and finally worked off the last of the cost of his studies) he returned to find his parents had gotten involved in an attempt by a small group of elves to get into Sevenarches. They were betrayed, however, and the Oakstewards were waiting for them. It was decided by Mayor Silkenlock that an example had to be made in order to keep anything like this from happening again. The entire group was sentenced to death, along with anyone connected with them. Calon barely made it out of the region, and he still has a price on his head. He has been running ever since, and has just stopped for a rest in a little town in Varisia.
He still feels disgrace and sorrow over his abandonment of his parents and the others. He is not even sure if they have been executed or not, but he hopes to someday have the power (and courage) to return and find out.

@Calon: I dig the backstory and character build (but doublecheck your ability scores--this is a 15 point buy), but what I'm really looking for are characters who are strongly tied to Biston. Maybe you had been searching for the culprit who sold out your parents, got as far as Biston, and then the trail went cold? They had already been killed, or simply "disappeared," and you decided to simply settle down and start a new life. Whatever you choose, let's see it!
@Everyone: Just a general announcement -- I don't think I'll be bothering with XP calculations and will instead award levels as the story progresses. Also, I plan on the game moving at a slow pace (or fast pace, depending on how you look at it). What I mean is, several weeks may pass between encounters, and your characters will have down time, so you will definitely have time to work on crafts or professions or what have you.
Elondor
As with any recruitment I do, I'll provide a few basic character ideas to gauge your interest. Should any appeal to you, I'll flush their backstory out fully.
Karthus is an undead lord cleric that's lawful neutral. His ultimate goal is to become a lich. He is a naturally good person with some evil abilities, hence neutral. Also, his end goal is more to transcend death and the burden of flesh than to become some evil creature.
Katarina is a chaotic neutral rogue/ninja who, after a brush with shadow magic, seeks the path of the shadowdancer.
Lee Sin is a lawful neutral hungry ghost qinggong monk. He's essentially a ki-heavy monk that uses criticals to help steal ki to feul his supernatural powers.
Eirilon is a blackblade magus with a very interesting blade. I'd like you to pick one of the following concepts!
-The blade HATES being used to attack things, and complains about this frequently, while the magus LOVES to mess with the sword, often attacking the ugliest creature in the bunch or making a point to not clean it after particularly gruesome fights.
-The magus is quite shy and has confidence problems, and the sword is a controlling force for the player. This option essentially has the blade be the main character while the magus is the backup, which could be interesting. Essentially I play the sword who tells the magus what to do
-The blade and magus are multiple personalities of the same person, and the sword was created when the magus seperated himself from, er, himself. The magus would be a shy, happy go lucky kind of guy, while the sword has all of the magus' previously bad behaviors and impulses. Maybe have the two personalities randomly switch vessels? In 2d12 hours the personalities swap. One could be chaotic good, while the other is lawful evil.
Asher is a quarterstaff magus. 'Nuff said i think
So if any of these sound interesting just let me know!

How about Calon has been told the person responsible has passed through Briston several times, but that is the only lead he has. He came here to wait and see if the person shows up again, but has also noticed several interesting species of fauna he has never seen before. He sets himself up as a spellcaster-for-hire, offering his services at a price that more of the common people can afford in order to make enough to live on and finance his researches.
As for his ability scores:
Dex: 15 (7) +2 racial +1 magical (transmuter power: +1 to one physical ability score, may change score affected each day when memorizing spells)
Con: 12 (2) -2 racial
Int: 14 (5) +2 racial
Wis: 12 (2)
Cha: 9 (-1)

Hey, this sounds pretty interesting to me. If there's still room, I'd like to give the game a shot. I'm thinking of a human alchemist who learned his trade from his father. They once worked together to provide potions, oils and alchemical goods to the fishermen and other workers in the city as well as brewing particularly potent liquors for the taverns. Lately, though, he's been doing most of the work at their shop since his father has taken to drinking their brew rather than selling it.
As for the character himself (name, details, stats forthcoming on approval), he's a bit of a troublemaker, or at least he was back when he could afford to be. He loathes having to work as hard as he does (which really isn't that hard, he only thinks it is), but if he doesn't work, he doesn't eat. He's brash, lazy, and is probably (accidentally) responsible for a couple of fires in Lakeside.
If that doesn't sound like what you're looking for, let me know. I'll be happy to come up with another concept.
Anton Kree
I could go for the uncle angle. So my character's dad started drinking after his sister, Gunser's wife, died. Since my character doesn't know his mom (whether she's alive or dead or what; his dad has never and still won't speak about her), maybe Gunser's wife was like a surrogate mother to him. I picture my character as being young, maybe just coming out of his teen years. He'd be handling her death poorly, probably by taking more risks in his alchemy or otherwise acting like a jerk or idiot.
Nevermind, I think I've got it!

I had to ask that, too. :)
at the top of the screen, click 'my account' (Rt-click into a new window, then you can still come back to this...) About two inches down, 'create a new messageboard alias'. Then you have to 'create a profile' for that alias, that can have stats and stuff, but most details have to go in a big text block. You can use spoilers to organize that text some. There's a button under the window where you enter text, "How to format your text" [Show], that will show you how to roll dice, too.

Dwarf Samurai (Sword Saint Archetype) Name: Falrur Azak(dwarven for strong craftsman red forge and yes I used a random name generator I know that it is not sporty but I'm not good at making names)
During Falrur's youth he was curious about the world outside of the town. During his days of schooling however he was ridiculed and bullied because of it, all the other kids would say that he was a traitor to their dwarven ways. After school he would work in the shop that his parents owned and made goods for. It was a shop dedicated to three things; weapons, armor, and jewelry. He would sometimes help make some of the items by giving his parents what tools they needed or by using the bellows to heat up the fire, while other times he would just simply look over the shop. Sometimes while he was looking over the shop there would be humans from the nearby town of Biston, as it is on the other side of the hill, passing through our village looking for gear or jewelry to help them with their adventures or with a romance back home. During their time in the shop however long it was he would ask them how the outside world was and even though they all had said different things about the subject they would use the same two words at least once "beautiful" and "magical".
When he told his parents about leaving to go adventuring his parents assured him that waiting until he was older would be for the best. So he waited, practiced fighting, practiced making weapons and looking at rare gems and finally was able to hold his own in a fight in his teenage years against the very bullies that used to beat him up.
When he came to the age that he and his parents agreed upon his parents stopped and asked him why he would like to start adventuring, his response was this "I would like venture out into the unknown, to see this sights few dwarves have seen in the outside world that I have heard about all of my life!"
So his parents realizing how hard pressed and stubborn on this adventuring thing they told him that he could go as long as he promised to adhere to these rules during his travels; Rule number one: If you are going to make any items, whether it be weapons, armor, or jewelry, make them of the best quality that you can. Rule number two: Obey all of the laws of the town that you are in, if you are in the wilderness do what you need to survive without putting you or your allies in peril. Rule number three: Do not attack unless you are provoked, surprised, or you or your allies get attacked, alternatively if your opponent no longer posses a threat to you or your allies stop attacking them, the only exception is when you challenge them then if they surrender stop attacking them but never turn your back to them for you never know if they are lying.

P.S. This is the first time that I have made a real back story for a character so I don't know how exactly it is supposed to be set up (I looked at Calon's and then looked at mine and modified mine from there). My group irl has skipped the make a back story part because most of my group just wants to hack and slash (my group is about eight people)... I on the other hand would like to get away from that and have a game where it is supposed to be played correctly with back stories and the such where fighting is not he main part of the game but a nice chunk of it.

@Elondor: Personally, I would like to hear more about Katarina or Lee Sin. Katarina doens't throw a bunch of throwing stars, and Lee Sin isn't blind, or... are they?
@Calon: That sounds reasonable to me. As I mentioned, Biston is a fairly magicless place, so even a low level wizard could probably afford to do a few odd jobs around the place, and be able to continually pay for a room at a tavern or inn -- assuming you've been there for several months or even a year or two. What I would want from you now is the name/any information you want to have about this person you're chasing, and how you learned that they would frequent Biston... and maybe a speculation or two WHY they frequent Biston, seeing as the River Kingdoms are so far away and Biston is so small. Also, you're absolutely right: the ability scores look good -- I hadn't looked into the Transmutation school, and it was throwing me off ;).
@Anton: In general it all looks good, but things are a little short and don't offer me as much to work with as I'd hope. I like what you've added about your aunt (possibly Gunser's wife), but what about more distant family or family history? Why did you move to Biston? Where does your father hail from before that? Maybe he's started telling you a bit more now that he's drunk all of the time and you're getting older...
@Gunser: I'm very intrigued, but would like to know more. If you would like it to be secretive, as it sounds like much of the town doesn't ask much and he doesn't tell much, feel free to put it in a spoiler or even PM me. Although I am concerned that, being a Sorcerer, you might not want to dump Charisma?
@Zotsune: For your first backstory, I'm impressed! Since I'm not exactly sure where we could place a small Dwarven town out in the Varisian wilderness, though, why not rewrite a bit and have Falrur hail from the city of Korvosa? Maybe he grew up, working in his parents' shop in the metropolis and learning their trade, and then you can decide from there what has brought him out to Biston? It's only about 80 miles away, so he could have simply decided to go start his own business, but stay within contact distance of the rest of his family. Or maybe something more exciting happened... :P.
@Grand Moff Vixen: Yep, level 1! My favorite levels are about 3-8, though, so we will probably try to run through the lower levels pretty quick.
@Everyone: Keep the backstories coming! If I didn't respond personally to you, that means I either missed a question if you asked one, or I'm waiting to hear more from you!
garabbott
@Anton: I like the improvements, good work!
@Jannet: No complaints here, that's a very intriguing background and I really like the flavor for a friendly local witch.
EDIT: I'm looking around and seeing very few martial classes -- we've got interest expressed from a Samurai and a Maybe Rogue/Maybe Monk, but not much else!

During his days of schooling however he was ridiculed and bullied because he was a dwarf, different then the norm of the rest of the class. So after he got permission to leave he asked around Korvosa where the closest town is and most of the people that knew of the outside said Biston would be the place to start.

Sorry I do not know the rules for modifying the back story so I just reposted the entire thing with the little modifications as per gm's suggestion. And I was thinking that I would be the main agro puller with the ability set up that I have (challenge).
Off topic are we able to get items from Adventures Armory?

Will this be set entirely in Golarion or partly? I am making my background to tie into the world as you have it. Also, in what part of Varisia does Briston lie?
I will make changes as needed as the info comes available.
For my race I am choosing a half-elf with the drow blooded racial trait.
As to the background, I am writing about three paragraphs. Anything more gets to be too much for a level 1 character to accomplish. I am being as detailed as I can.
It will be a orphan who is pursuing her dreams of building something better than what she grew up with.
tangmcgame
I'm also willing to come up with another character concept if needed. I like Anton, but I'm not so attached that I couldn't get into something else. He could pretty easily be a rogue, ranger, or even gunslinger without having to change too much of his story.
Another potential idea I had was of a cleric or paladin missionary from Korvosa, sent as part of an initiative of the church's to subdue any potential unrest and in so doing prevent another bloody uprising from ever happening.
Elondor
Baha I like to name my characters after video game characters or book characters.
Katarina is intended to be a dervish dancer, less for optimization than for flavor. Dancing in the shadows with your blade? Seems awesome. I'd prefer ninja on her for vanishing trick to add to her shunpos.
As for Lee Sin, he is a crit warrior that gets more and more short tempered the less ki he has in his pool. Once he has none, he'll be very intent in seeking out enemies or anyone who will start a fight with him to steal their ki.
garabbott
@Zotsune: Yes, any Paizo material (as long as I can find it on www.d20pfsrd.com) is acceptable!
@Grand Moff Vixen: Entirely in Golarion, most likely entirely in Varisia. Biston is northwest of Korvosa on the shore of Lake Syrantula and at the edge of Ashwood Forest.
@Elondor: Well let's see some backstories for them!

How's this:
When Calon first left the River Kingdoms, he fled to his mentor in Ustalav. A few weeks later, he caught sight of a friend of his father, an elf named Amrod Telperiën, from across the marketplace. He was unable to catch him, but he did find a merchant who said that Amrod was hired on his caravan to take trade goods to Varisia. Since he had been told (by a reliable source) that all of the elves involved had been captured, he was suspicious of how and why Amrod was still free.
He made the long trip to Varisia, and was searching for months from city to city, following Amrod's trail. The last time he was seen was on a trade caravan that passed through Biston, but the townsfolk weren't sure where it's next stop would be. The caravan passes through the town each year, so Calon is waiting for it to come around again, and hoping either Amrod is still with it, or someone remembers him.

I have the alias up. Her name is Narcelia, a half-elf sorcerer from Korvosa.
garabbott, let me know what you think. If you feel that some tweaks would make it work better please let me know. I do not mind tweaking the background at all to work better with the game and party.
No crunch has been done since I am at work. I will have the full crunch done in a little while. Hero Lab makes it a breeze.
garabbott
@Narcelia: Okay, but as I've mentioned what I'm really looking for are characters with strong ties to the village. It sounds like Narcelia has plenty of background before her time in Biston, but what keeps her there?
@Garris: I like it, but I want more. Your father's name, the name of the group of hunters, Garris' personality and his outlook on life, etc. You've given a paragraph with a lot of possibilities, but this is your chance to really flesh him out!

Also, everyone: tomorrow I am moving to a new city and may not respond for a day or two because of a lack of internet depending on where I sleep for the weekend (still not exactly sure where that'll be). The reason I made the backstory end at her getting into Biston is to roleplay out why she would stay there.
I will continue her story so as to have stronger ties as to why she would stay.
Starting Gold: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9 x 10 = 90 gold.
Crunch is up. I will finish her backstory tomorrow.

All right, it's going to be a sorcerer, the race will be either Halfling, Gnome or Nagaji. The biggest difference between the race choices would be the Eidelon. If I go for a Nagaji, the Eidolon will eventually be a hulking, ravening reptillian quadraped, possibly looking something like the uberdragon on How to Train Your Dragon, minus the wings. If I decide on halfling or gnome, his eidolon will be the Golem of Prague.
I'll either decide a little later, or I'll submit both versions.

Ummmm... uberdragon from How to Train Your Dragon is the Night Fury! (get down!) okay Hiccup do what you want. Or do you mean the one that died at the end?
And Nagaji is what I would have chosen if I were not going dwarf but then I thought of the back story and how hard it would be to incorporate a non-normal race into the campaign. It works just so beautifully with the Samurai Sword Saint because of the +2 to both Str and Cha.

If you still have room I'd like to play a dhampir paladin.
Born to a Vampire Clan. Mother was human, father was a vampire. Mother fed baby her own blood. Mother was killed in a raid by the Son's Of Iomedae, an order of Paladins. The Paladins took her in and taught her the ways of the Paladin. She seeks revenge on all vampire kind for what they did to her mother.
She is a Paladin of Iomedae and is a member of the Son's of Iomedae.
She is charismatic and wise and confident; she knows when to speak and when to listen.
She seeks revenge on her father for what he did to her mother. The Son's of Iomedae descended on the Clan and slew all the vampires they could find but her mother was killed by a vampire during the raid, and her father escaped.
Most of the Dhamphir were taken in by the Son's of Iomedae but a few were taken by the vampire lords that escaped, her younger half-brother escaped with her father.
She is willing to adventure if it could possibly lead to her father or her half- brother, or if asked to by her temple.

Yeah, I was talking about something more along the lines of this bad mother, but some things would obviously some things will be different, size for one thing. I'm pretty sure there is no way to get an eidolon that is big enough to stomp a ship without meaning to.
And yeah, I did mean Summoner, not Sorcerer.

Thinking a grey elf, if those are present in your setting. Mother is a druid father is a wizard. Has set out on his own after some great cataclysm destroyed his family and most of his people.
Somewhat jaded and amoral he would range between Neutral to Neutral Evil depending on your point of view, not believing in good or evil and cursing the gods for allowing such tragedy at the same time.
If you approve me I will give you more. Was thinking of a wizard/Archivest mystic theurge. He would mostly buff debuff. A man of books in every sense of the word.
Str 12 -2 10
Dex 13 +2 15
Con 12 -2 10
Int 14 +2 16
Wis 13 13

@wolfman1911: Backstory is what really matters right now, but keep in mind that there have been plenty of arcane caster submissions already, so your submission must be strong!
@Jannet: To be honest, not that I can think of, really. There is a bigger than normal population of Dwarves in Korovosa, and Half-Elves and Half-Orcs aren't any more uncommon than usual. The monstrous races are fairly well represented across the land (goblins, kobolds, etc). Your choice, really!
@Jack: An interesting story, but could you flesh it out? I'm looking for names and specifics, mostly.
@LostSoul: What's a grey elf? I like the character crunch concept.

I'll work on his character sheet in a little while and put it up later. Here is the backstory, I went with the Nagaji because that seemd a lot more interesting. He is Neutral Good, and a lot more physical than you might expect. I intend for him to carry a longspear and use reach attacks to flank for the Eidolon.
Sahat has always lived in the Lakeside district where his father works as a fisherman and his mother is a cleric of Shelyn. He tried to learn his fathers trade, but the only thing he really got out of it was the ability to use a longspear without making a fool of himself. He decided to join the city guard, and thought about becoming a monk to do it, but found that his meditation was interrupted by what seemed to be a presence in his mind.
He found that he could communicate with this being, and with some effort over a period of time, he was able to draw it out into the real world. The creature looked something like a dragon, though bulkier and without wings, and the size of a horse. He found that the creature could speak every language that he knew, and that it seemed to have the same mindset as he did. It told him that he had called it into being, and thus, it would serve him for as long as he wished. He was allowed to use his Eidolon on the city guard when he was able to demonstrate that it was intelligent and that it would follow orders.

I wasn't satisfied with how the backstory was written, so I rewrote it and elaborated some, tying him a little more into the history of the town. You can probably ignore the spoiler in my last post.
Here are his stats, if you are interested:
Strength 13
Dexterity 14
Constitution 12
Intelligence 10
Wisdom 10
Charisma 16
Sahat Yawar knows nothing of Naga, he's never even heard of them, much less does he know that, as a Nagaji, he is in some way related to them. He was raised by Humans, though he doesn't know why his 'parents' took him in, or how they happened upon him. His parents were devotees of Shelyn, and apparently found him abandoned, though they have never said where. What little research Sahat has done on his origins has led him to believe that he was in some way descended from dragons, bronze dragons in particular, because the pictures of them that he's seen depict them with yellow-green scales, just like the ones covering him. While his neighbors might be inclined to regard Sahat with fear or disdain, his mother's influence in town, combined with his decent nature, has resulted in his acceptance, more or less. There will always be people that judge a book by its cover, and will react to his fearsome appearance rather than how he acts, but he tries to ignore those people.

It should be mentioned, that Sahat hates Korvosa with a passion. Sahat was nearly a prisoner in his own home during the martial law, for fear that the Korvosans would mistake him for a tiefling, and do any number of horrible things to him as a result. He did sneak out from time to time, for mostly innocious reasons, but he never got caught, a few close calls aside. It was during this period that he sensed the presence. He spoke to it often, and tried for many years to bring it out before he finally got it right. The creature looked something like a dragon, though bulkier and without wings, and the size of a horse. He found that the creature could speak every language that he knew, and that it seemed to have the same mindset as he did. It told him that he had called it into being, and thus, it would serve him for as long as he wished. He doesn't remember if he named it, or it told him its name, but since then it has been called Sezaren.
Once he realized that he would never be a fisherman, he remembered the time that Biston was held in martial law, and resolved that he would do his part to ensure that his home would never be held in bondage like that again. He marched into the city guard barracks with his 'pet' in tow, and requested admittance into the watch. He and Sezaren put on a show for them, Sahat giving the beast orders in Draconic, hoping that noone would recognize it as a real language, and Sezaran doing his part to play the trained pet. The ruse worked, or at the very least it was tolerated, and so Sahat and his pet monster were allowed to serve in the city guard.
Sahat hates that he has to pretend that his best friend is a simple animal when others are around, but he feels that people would be more likely to believe that the dragon looking creature was unintelligent, than to have it speaking to them as an equal. Perhaps that goes back to Sahat's own past, in which people have been surprised to learn that he could speak.
