He begins to move away as half his companions seem to prefer the flee response, while the other half seems to prefer the fight response. He was going to take the fight response. But still have room to not experience the brunt of the attack. He readies his crossbow

Black Tom |
As you opt for the better part of valor, suddenly a sickly greyish arm stretches impossibly far down from a nearby roof and tries to grab Luuther, but nothing is quite as slippery as a frightened rogue. A small rubbery and vaguely humanoid face becomes visible above you.
Those of you that are not terrified may strike back if you like. I don't think we'll need a map - it's a single Small-sized opponent. Don't bother with initiatives: if you are not frightened, you can take an action.
Inmir |
By the gods! What is that thing? Inmir gasps as he tries to put as much space as possible between himself and the creature.
Fleur |
Fleur puts as much distance as she can between herself and the source of danger... "Ack!!1 Get it away from me!"
Luuther |
Just in case Luuther gets another will save since he was attacked... 1d20 ⇒ 6 Will Save
"Ah! I have never seen such a thing. Keep it away from me! Run before it dooms us all"!
Talin Moonscar |
"Gah!! Go away! Or better yet... die!" he fires at the creature above them
Flit!: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 1 = 24
Shlick!: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Inmir |
Inmir stops, aghast to discover himself fleeing so heedlessly. Hurriedly reloading his crossbow, he fires at the creature.
Shoot!: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
But in his haste his bolt flies wide of the mark.
Black Tom |
Haydar and Talin wound the creature, and Duriel breaks free of its grasp. The tentacle-like arm withdraws and so does the monster, scampering away to tend its wounds.
End of combat. You get 200 xp each for the choker and the haunt. (Haydar is able to identify the latter.)
Fleur |
Hopefully Fleur recovers her senses when the monster withdraws... Still shaking with fright, she whimpers... "Wha.. What WAS that horror?"
Inmir |
Inmir leans back against the wall behind him and covers his eyes with his left hand. His new crossbow hangs once again from his right hand, hanging at his side.
Oh my Lady! Beloved Pharasma, forgive me, I have failed you.
In a very shaky voice he says...
I am so sorry my friends. I have never felt such fear before. It overwhelmed me completely. I had thought that my training in the church might have inured me to such things, but that seems a clear example of folly leading to a fall. I am sorry that my lack lead you into peril.
On the subject of peril - I believe Duriel got hurt. Might this be a good first time to try out the new wand? I don't recall if we ever discussed who would be carrying that btw.
Inmir |
Inmir retrieves the bolt that fell from his crossbow when he ran but is unable to find the one that went so dramatically wide when he fired at the choker. As he tidies himself up he quietly says...
I would imagine that the sort of things we were sent here to find are more likely to be in the house than in the grounds.
Of course there are many good reasons why we might want to take a peek outside first ... but Inmir is very new to this :)

"Just to be safe. Make sure its not infected" he warns
"Ive seen flesh wounds kill a man out in the desert"
guys. Im at a LARP this weekend. So from tomorrow i will be unavailable till at least Monday

Inmir |
Inmir will check the wound to ensure it is not infected in any way.
Heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
That seems fine Duriel. It doesn't look like anything got into it. Keep it clean and covered and it will heal just fine over time. I still think we should use the wand to heal it now though. It makes little sense to buy such a thing and then let one of our number go into unknown peril still wounded.
Black Tom |
Luuther thinks the gates are safe, so you peer inside. A spacious yard fills the compound east of the house. To the east, several small stone outbuildings have been built right into the compound’s outer wall. A well stands between two of these outbuildings, opposite a stone table and benches that sit in the shadow of the house. To the west, two sets of steps, both flanked by columns, lead up to doors into the main house. To the northwest, an open doorway leads into an extension of the house, next to a small structure with a domed roof.
A large brown snake lies coiled under the stone table.
Map updated.
Inmir |
Still quite shaken and willing to follow the others lead, Inmir says That sounds like a good idea, let's check the other doors
He will cast Guidance on Luuther to assist in his checking.
Black Tom |
Luuther checks the other doors and proclaim them safe. Beyond them the western side of the estate forms an L-shaped yard mostly given to sand, sun-dried earth, and the ancient husks of dead trees. Stone benches line the walls of the yard, and a large tiled pool sits in the southwest corner, dried and partially filled with sand.
Map updated
Fleur |
"This place looks like it was once a lovely garden area with trees and a pool, perhaps for bathing, or just for serenity... now it is just dry and abandoned and very sad." Fleur sighs and perhaps unadvisedly walks over to the edge of the 'pool' and looks in on the sand, but being careful of her footing.
Black Tom |
I assume you will stop Fleur from venturing into the unexplored territory so I moved you all. Feel free to correct me.
As you approach the empty pool, something enormous and horrible moves at its bottom. It turns out to be a centipede of almost unbelievable size. It rears up and prepares to lunge.
It's huge-sized, so the frame in the pool is actually all monster. Combat map updated.
Monster goes on 11, so if you beat that, go ahead. In case you're wondering it's got 15 feet reach.
Inmir |
Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Inmir gasps in horror at the sight of the giant creature but otherwise takes no action presumably with that roll he will be dead last so I will wait until then :)
Luuther |
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 Initiative
Luuther jumps up on the bench (M18), and loosens an arrow from his seldom used short bow.
"Whoo hoo That's a BIG surprise in the sand".
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 Bow
1d6 ⇒ 4 Arrow
Fleur |
init: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Fleur tosses a quick acid splash at the monster
to hit ranged touch: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
dmg if hits: 1d3 ⇒ 2
then with a gasp of alarm and disgust at the giant centipede, she leaps back away from the pool's edge 20' move
Black Tom |
Luuther hits the monster, damaging it slightly (but you should be able to add some sneak attack damage), but Duriel can't find purchase. The monster bends down and bites him for 12 points of damage (and a Fort 17 save vs poison). Its tail swishes by harmlessly.
You are all up.
Inmir |
Inmir moves forward to in front of Haydar and intones a prayer.
Lady of Graves, grant me the touch of your power that I may heal my ally
Converts Endure Elements to cast Cure Light Wounds on Duriel
Heal!: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Inmir |
You know, originally I thought that was an acceptable risk, given that Duriel is (by my count) down to his last HP and the creature hitting Inmir isn't certain, even if his low AC makes it probable. However it has just occurred to me that Duriel and Inmir are the only two in the group that can use the wand, so perhaps this is an unwise course of action. So with your permission I will change it to him standing where he is and channeling instead.
Channel: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Still very nerve wracking though as this leaves him on 4HP standing in front of a creature that can do 12. :(

Fleur |
Fleur again casts acid splash at the centipede
ranged touch to hit: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
dmg if hits: 1d3 ⇒ 3
------
Ratchet, Fleur's familiar |
Ratchett, Fleur's familiar, who is sitting on her shoulder, does the same, casting acid splash at the creature. (school familiar ability)
ranged touch to hit: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
dmg if hits: 1d3 ⇒ 2
But while Fleur's blob of acid at least came close if it didn't hit, Ratchett's goes awry and misses completely... His little tail droops a bit and he chitters something unintelligibly and softly.
Inmir |
You don't see my feats because they are mine, MINE I tell you - they are precious to me and I share them with none.
Alternatively you don't seem them because I somehow forgot to put in a section for that. I shall correct that forthwith. And yes, my mighty catalog of Feats does in fact include Selective Channeling, which I shall be invoking to keep from healing the centipede, who I am sure desperately needs 3HP of healing :)
Also, it looks like I didn't do as bad in the initiative stakes as I thought I would - come on people, sub-5 initiatives are My Domain, you lot need to do better :)
Luuther |
Sneak attack damage from last round: 1d6 ⇒ 3
"Hoo hoo! This one has a nasty bite and a temper to match. Let's see if we can add some thorns to the party".
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 Bow
2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2 Arrow + precision damage
"Ah Jing... Now you turn the air to jelly".
