The Storyteller |
A burly middle-aged half-orc by the name of Glork Mossgut, bosun of the Albino Orca, shouts out as everyone gets on deck. "Give your name, and the duties you think you are fit to provide on this ship, when I point at you!" The Captain observes the situation and whispers to his first officer, a human by the name of Markus Brittles, who writes notes on a parchment. The bosun's calloused awkwardly bent finger points at each of you in turn.
Pentor Lionsmane! |
With a grin on his face bright enough to blind a cat Pentor steps forward, clanking slightly from all the hand azes festooned around his body, and gives what he thinks is a snappy salute when Glork's finger points at him.
"Pentor Lionsmane at your service sirrah! I can furl a sail and untie a main knot faster than a one legged man in a three legged race! Ready and willing to do whatever need to be done sirrah."
Having said his piece Pentor steps back and waits for somebody else to step forward.
I say, this is going swimmingly! thinks Pentor to himself.
Fishhook! |
Fishhook waits for the little ones to finish, then steps forward with a big tusky smile and shouts,"FISHHOOK FISH!" Then his smile fades as his face goes more serious and he says with a nod "And loyal." He then steps back in line and his serious face burst back into that tusky smile. Obviously the orc is pleased with his answer.
The Storyteller |
After the new crew members have announced themselves, the Captain and his officers hold a brief discussion. Then Bosun Mossgut comes to each of you.
To Toe Jam, "You will report to Deacon Black, priest of Olidammara. He is organizing the prayer schedules. I hope you know something about the various religions. Of course you will be able to lead prayers in your own faith, as long as you are asking for protection for this voyage."
To Pentor, "So you think you know your way around a ship. Well, the captain sees something in you, you are to be an apprentice to the ship's pilot."
To Zochel, "Mister Littledown. Currently we don't have a need for a carpenter as the ship was repaired when we got to port. But no doubt your services will be useful on this voyage. For the time being, you are assigned to the galley. You will report to Master Hamfist."
To Fishhook,
In Common, "Got that?"
After he speaks to all the recruits in turn, then shouts out, "Report to the quartermaster and turn in your gear. He'll store it and keep track of it until need."
I'll post comments about your characters as the are finalized on the other thread.

Minor point. Sailing ships carried carpenters, Replacing block and tackle, minor repairs, battle/storm damage etc. Pirates for example awarded a carpenter about as many shares as the navigator. Both were considered vital to the health of the ship and crew. Just a point I am looking forward to peeling spuds.
Fishhook! |
Fishhook responds back to Bosun Mossgut,
After he speaks Fishhook slams his fist on his chest in salute to his new Captain and crewmates. Then he moves gingerly to the quartermaster offering up his stuff and following whatever orders he is given.

oops forgot to mention that Zochel was heading for the quartermaster with the others.
The Storyteller |
The Quartermaster, uptight looking dwarf by the name of Hanner, takes an inventory of each item turned in, writing it in a ledger. He then reads the list back to the crew-member and asking them to make their mark by the list in the ledger.
Afterwards, each crew-member either reports to their duty or goes to rest in the crew quarters. The crew is informed that it will take roughly two weeks to reach the first islands on the edge of the Isles of the Lost. There are colonies on these islands and the ship will stop there to restock and gather news.
In the off hours, Deacon Black (also known as the Man in Black), organizes games of chance to entertain the crew. A common game is the game of High-Low.
Deacon Black doesn't actually participate, he merely sets up the games and occasional checks to make sure no one is cheating.
We'll play a couple of hands if anyone is interested.
Toe Jam |
Toe Jam sits down to watch the game, with Swiftwing on his shoulder, sits down to watch the game. When one of the sailors starts cussing, he almost jumps out of his skin when the raven speaks in perfectly clear common, "Watch your mouth, there is a lady present." Toe Jam quickly comments, "You can ignore her. She may be female, but a lady she isn't." Swiftwing replies by digging her claws into Toe Jam's shoulder.
Pentor Lionsmane! |
"I say you chaps, this is awfully exciting isn't it!" declares Pentor to the room at large.
Looking around for an empty seat as soon as he finds one he sits down and attempts to look like he knows what is going on.
"This seems terribly complicated. Tell me has anybody ever visited the Blue Oyster tavern?" asks Pentor to anybody that looks like they might answer.
Looking over at Toe Jam and Swiftwing the young aristocrat opens his mouth and asks the question that has been on his mind ever since he realised the bird could talk.
"Does your bird do any other tricks? Maybe sing the 'Tale OF the Bawdry Lass'?"
Toe Jam |
Having already upset Swiftwing, Toe Jam says nothing in order to spare his other shoulder, but Swiftwing is more vocal. "You want me to be reduce myself to be being a ribald bard, do you, meathead? I should fly over there and poke out your ears to give you the mercy of not having to listen to such fools."
DM - Pentor |

I should fly over there and poke out your ears to give you the mercy of not having to listen to such fools."
Taken aback at the reply of Swiftwing, Pentor seems flustered for long seconds, making a show of being engrossed in the card game while he tries to adjust to the reaming that he just received at the tongue of the raven.
"Ahem...well I wouldn't say that. Your not some kind of sorceror that's been changed into a bird by some evil curse are you?" inquires Pentor.
Fishhook! |
Fishhook chuckles at the exchange between the Pentor and the bird. "Good to see birdy find purpose in life, haha maybe nobleboy be more careful next time." Fishhook gives them both a smile, and says to the both of them "Come play games with Fishhook, maybe Fishhook let you win a hand." He chuckles and will make room for the two of them if needed.
The Storyteller |
The sailor who had cursed, Crimb, looks at the bird then the goblin and then over to another sailor. "I thought at first it was saying the goblin was female, ha ha. I can't tell the difference."
The other sailor, Mack, replies, "Like that drow you were with, ha ha."
Crimb laughly just as loud, "It doesn't matter, when its drow!"
Mack quickly deals some cards in front of Fishhook and Pentor.
Fishhook:
1d13 ⇒ 2
1d13 ⇒ 11 (jack)
Pentor:
1d13 ⇒ 1 (ace)
1d13 ⇒ 10
Mack says, "Ah, easy money. Pays 1 for 1."
If the cards are 8-12 numbers different, you get your bet matched (e.g. 1 cp wins 1 cp). If the cards are 6 or 7 different you get twice your bet. If the cards are 5 different you get three times, 4 different four times, 3 different six times, 2 different ten times. 1 or 0 different get split.
Fishhook and Pentor each have to wager before their third cards are flipped, minimum 1 cp.
EDIT: I should also say, the maximum is 1 gp. These are just regular sailors you're playing with, not the high rollers.
The Storyteller |
"Fishhook think you right, Fishhook go again." Fishhook will put down another copper coin for the next hand.
You can wait till you see the cards before you bet if you wish.
"Alright! See boys, here is someone that knows how to win. You got to play to win. How about it Toe Jam, want to get in on this? Don't wait till Fishhook here wins all the money." Mack says as he mixes the cards up and deals two more to Fishhook.
Fishhook:
1d13 ⇒ 9
1d13 ⇒ 7
"Oh, here's your chance to make some big money my friend. Pays 10 to 1. You want to stick with that 1 cp or do you want to take a bigger chance and make more money?"
The Storyteller |
Fishhook:
1d13 ⇒ 6
"OH SO CLOSE!", shouts Mack. "Don't worry, your lucky will find its way here to the table soon enough."
Pentor:
1d13 ⇒ 7
"It sure looks right to me.", Mack replies to Pentor as he takes Fishhooks coins and lays them in front of Pentor.
Crimb grumbles a bit as he bets 5 cp on a 5-Queen split only to draw a King, but he doesn't curse this time.
"Maybe Toe Jam's bird wants to play if he's not interested. What do you say my lady?", Mack finishes in a slightly mocking tone, a broad smile on his face revealing several teeth missing.
Pentor Lionsmane! |
Looking at his newly acquired copper coins gives Pentor a warm feeling in his stomach.
"I say, this is quite a lot of fun!" says Pentor to the other. Turning to Fishhook, Pentor gives him a little grin and a light punch on the shoulder. "Better luck next time old chap!"
Putting down another 2cp Pentor gestures for the cards to be dealt again.
"I've got a lucky feeling about this one!"
Fishhook! |
Fishhook laughs when he gets close to winning he easily hands over his copper. He then grins to Pentor and says, "Fishhook's luck take time haha! Good job nobleboy, maybe nobleboy getting Fishhook's luck after all haha." He looks over to Toe Jam's bird, "If Nobleboy wins, maybe birdy should try." Fishhook puts a copper piece in front of Toe Jam for swiftwing to play. Fishhook smacks both Toe Jam and Pentor on there backs then laughs and says, "Fishhook and Fishhooks new crewmates ready for next hand! Fishhooks luck is strong!" He's ready for the next hand.
The Storyteller |
Sorry, I've been sidelined the last couple of days.
Pentor:
1d13 ⇒ 7
1d13 ⇒ 3
"4 for 1. You sure you want to bet two? If you bet 5 cp, you could get win 2 sp."
Fishhook:
1d13 ⇒ 1
1d13 ⇒ 12
"Here's your chance to win all your money back, this is easy money. 1 for 1."
Swiftwing (Fishhook 2):
1d13 ⇒ 2
1d13 ⇒ 11
"Well, Lady Bird? Your servant," Mack says motioning towards Toe Jam, "want to put a bit more down, and make some extra easy money. 1 for 1."
The Storyteller |
"This crew? A good four years now. Took up with the Captain after old Grop retired. We seen some dangerous stuff, but the Captain has been good about keeping the crew safe. Well, most, Hamfist excluded of course. ha ha ha" Mack then deals a card to Fishhook.
1d13 ⇒ 3
"See! Now Olidammara is shining on you. As I always say, fortune favors the persistent."
The Storyteller |
Mack passes a sp to Fishhook.
"Alright blue blood. Big money coming your way.", Mack says to Pentor as he flips the card.
1d13 ⇒ 12
"Oh well, lady luck is a fickled mistress as they say." Mack quickly swiping up the 5 cps in front of Pentor.
"Now you are getting into the spirit my little friend", Mack says to Toe Jam as he flips a card for him.
1d13 ⇒ 13
"Ouch, well you can't win big if you don't play big, that is what my pappy use to always say. Oh and you have to stay in it to win it." Mack quickly swipes the 6 cp in front of Toe Jam (his 5 and Fishhook's 1 that he put there).
Crimb turns to Zochel, "We be playing high-low, get between the cards and you wins see. Easy game to learn, but don't trust too much to Mack here's suggestions." Mack playfully looks hurt, "You cut me to the wick Crimb." Turning to Zochel, "You don't have to bet before you see the cards. The closer they are, the greater the pay off."
Dealing two cards in front of Zochel:
1d13 ⇒ 6
1d13 ⇒ 12
"Ah, six-Queen split, them pays 2 for 1. Want to bet that 3 cp, or you want to up it? Double your money. Of course you could only bet 1 cp, but you wouldn't make much when you win." Mack says to Zochel.
The Storyteller |
"Alright tree surgeon, luck, she's been tricksy. Let's she how she does for you." Mack then flips the third card in front of Zochel.
1d13 ⇒ 7
"Alright! 6 cp for the wood worker. Now see if you had bet 5 cp, you'd have got a 1 sp."
Mack moves 6 sp over to Zochel.
Just at that moment an alarm goes off on the main deck as if in response to Zochel's good luck. Deacon Black stiffens turning looking quickly at the table where the fellows are betting becoming a dark shadow as a slim length of steel appears in his hand.
Toe Jam |
"Looks like some could stand to lay off the rum." Swiftwing comments before claiming a corner hammock for herself and Toe Jam with a bulwark she could perch on right by it. One of the other sailors who had been about to claim it looked at the bird, than Toe Jam, who simply shrugged, back at the bird, and decided not to push his luck with the obviously unusual bird and the goblin she had followed around for some unknown, but apparently very good, reason.
Zochel the loser |
"DON'T WORRY FISHHOOK BE QUIET"Fishhook says quite loudly. Fishhook looks back at Zochel and says "Come on littleman, Games over. Better find bunk." Fishhook will help Pentor and Zochel find a spot to sleep then will take whatever is left.
Check two posts up. The loser has left the building.
