Shandor "The Beast"
|
"Very well, then let's investigate these rumors of a pregnant daughter that used to belong to a cult. Let's head to the Talich Manor."
Once arriving there, Shandor will ask his trusted advisor to have him announced under his assumed name, wishing to meet a representative of the Talich family with the intent of possibly sealing a contract with them.

Arnthoth would believe him if he said he had glitter on his legs instead of hair.

Talich Manor: Along with the Dunstone family, the Talichs are an indispensable asset to industry in Palin’s Cove, and the money they’ve made running the town’s foundry has earned them the most opulent and ostentatious manor house in the town. Butler Gavril Ditschek greets you at the door, and knows you are not there by the family's invitation. He is a stuffy, formal old man who runs the lower floors of the Talich family’s manor. He greets you in a very precise and dignified manner.
Can I help you? I don't believe we were expecting any guests today. It is obvious to him that Shandor appears to have an entourage, he there focuses his attention to him.
Shandor "The Beast"
|
Shandor only deigns look at the butler for mere instant, before announcing in a haughty manner: "Good day, I am Lord Avis Dimitrov, hailing from Korvosa. I was told that the Talich family not only possessed the foundry, but was one of the most powerful in this business. Therefore I have come to deal with your Lord and master, for I represent a consortium of interest interested in ordering vast numbers of siege weapons. Would you announce us, please?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
Shandor "The Beast"
|
Shandor acts proudly and keeps his chin high in the Talich family's presence. He acknowledges every family member, seemingly delighted to make their acquaintance. He first tries to see if there is a daughter, inquiring about the children (out of courtesy of course!) if they aren't present. He will make his pedigree known, as well as his firm intent to conclude a business deal with the Talich, but asking to know more about who he's going to do business with.
Shandor then asks about the other families, and their relationship with one another. He'll subtly deviate the conversation on rumors of a cult growing rampant in Palin's Cove, innocently asking if they've heard anything about that.

As Shandor is schmoozing, Awveyen will over see the "servants" and casually inspect the house and it's staff.
perception: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (2) + 21 = 23
Looking for anything out of the ordinary
Shandor "The Beast"

I forgot to ask, are any rolls necessary?
Oswin Durnhelm
|
Oswin mostly keeps to himself. He continues to feel a great deal of discomfort in these dealings, but knows that the ultimate goal will result in good being done.
He assumes the role of bodyguard for now, and when separated from Shandor with the offer of a game of cards, he brightens visibly.
"What's your game, sir? Rummy? Whist? I must say, we played quite a few back at the abbey where I grew up..."
Been trying to catch up on games. Kept missing this one somehow!

Shandor doesn't make any headway with the family members, they're all a bit recluse, and he'll find out why later.
Perceptions
Oswin: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17
Arnthoth: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Julian: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
During the exceedingly card games, Arnthoth suggests that maybe losing the games will make Butler Gavril imbibe more wine if he keeps winning.
Julian Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
As it happens, the more games he wins, the more he drinks. As he gets more drunk, it gets easier for Julian to keep taking the money back that Gavril has won.
During their game, the Butler gets very gossipy. He tells you all about the only daughter, Milena, who had a serious shift in behavior around the time of her secret pregnancy 2 decades ago, and talks about how she frequently visits the Belodia Asylum, though only at nights.
Shandor "The Beast"
|
Shandor won't press the issue of the cult if he sees the family has a daughter of age. He'll thank them for their time and take his leave.
Great, we now have a solid lead! We'll definitely return to the Asylum at night and check the secret passage we found earlier, or we could just follow the daughter, or we could tell her (privately) that we're interested in joining this cult. Thoughts?

You aren't going to get any more clues that are worth anything at this place. The Butler has told you his one good tidbit of interesting information and the family are just playing their most elegant and formal roles. The only daughter they have is the one that the butler spoke of, so you're guessing her age would be around 35-40, probably not a marriageable age for Shandor's alias.
Shandor "The Beast"
|
Since we have a solid lead, I'm counting on everyone to contribute to what comes next since we are to infiltrate this cult and we have a pretty decent idea of where it's hiding. I hope the pace of the game can quicken a fair bit!

Once the party had regrouped, Arnthoth listens to the new information, then asks. "How will we enter to inspect the secret area? At night? Under false auspices or covertly?"
Awveyen Thillvahna
|
Kermit flail!
?
I do not believe there was a secret area really it just seemed they covered the garbage shoot with a large box. Most likely to prevent patients from escaping. What information do we have?
Shandor "The Beast"
|
"Very well. Let's just follow the nobleman's daughter at night and see what manner of secret passage she takes to go inside the Asylum. If we're found, I shall tell her of our great desire to join this cult, and that I want her to introduce us. Agreed?"
Shandor "The Beast"
|
"Well well, quite the elusive girl, isn't she? Shall we try and break in? This is getting exciting."
Awveyen Thillvahna
|
Might as well.
Oswin Durnhelm
|
Oswin sighs. Subterfuge was bad enough, but breaking in? He was going to have quite a bit of praying to do.
"Do what you must. I can barely stand the thought of it, except that it might lead to the Lissalans. I will not attempt to hinder you, but please do not ask my aid in this part."

Like most of my kin I can move quietly when needed. Also I do have spells that aid it moving undetected.

You return to the asylum, it is late, after hours, the Alienist is gone for the day, but you hear orderlies wandering around.

Arnthoth Stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Oswin Stealth: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (18) - 3 = 15
Arnthoth trips over nothing and makes a clattering.
Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (1) + 15 = 16
This was actually pointless since Arnthoth's stealth roll was a 3.
You find a row of prison cells lines each side of a long hallway. Within each lies a cloth mat atop a bed of straw. The walls are heavily padded, as are the metal bars isolating the cells’ inhabitants from the outside world. The sounds of faint whimpering and incoherent mumbling echo off the cold stone walls and floors.
Ten patients occupy various cells in this area, spread out so that they take up adjacent cells as rarely as possible. They are truly insane and speak nonsense if questioned, though most are comatose, unresponsive, or sleeping.
One patient calls out at the sound of approaching footsteps from his cell, the third from the east in the northern row.
Hello? Can anyone hear me? Please. He whimpers.
Shandor "The Beast"
|
"First, what's your name and what can you tell us about what's going on here? Secondly, have you heard of a cult gathering here?"
Mari Clock
|
Tomasz. My name is Tomasz Kosta. I know of the Feasters of the Heart. Free me from this place and I will tell you everything I know about them.
He is a pallid young man, lying on the floor in a straight-jacket. Where his eyes should be is only blank flesh, covered in scabs and scars.
Awveyen Thillvahna
|
What happened to your eyes? Awveyen asks bluntly.
Arnthoth Koortuskson
|
Arnthoth hastily grabs at the wall, giving the party and embarrased look. "Sorry!" He whispers. Arnthoth starts to inquire about the man's eyes, but the masked elf asks first, so Arn waits for the answer.
Shandor "The Beast"
|
Shandor looks at his companions first. He whispers to them.
"What do you think, can he be trusted? He certainly seems knowledgeable about the cult, but won't he be a liability?"
Oswin Durnhelm
|
Oswin nods.
"Could be, but we have precious few choices in this matter. If he is as sane as he is acting now, then this is no place for him. Allow me to watch over him, perhaps he can be set on the path of redemption."

So we are trusting the man who is locked in an asylum, wearing a straight jacket, and has no eye. Awveyen states; more to reiterate the current situation then to question the decision.
While Tal goes to work on the lock Awveyen will inspect the cell and the area round it looking for traps and or alarms. He will also cast Detect magic and do a quick sweep.

"That is good enough to me. Tomasz, we'll free you but you'll keep the straight jacket for now, until we feel we can fully trust you. Is that fair enough for you?"
