I played for the very first time last night, with a level 4 Kyra pre-generated character! But, I want a character that's more...me. I'd like to build an Investigator character, which is listed in the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild Guide, but some of the Investigator archetypes are not listed. Does that mean those classes are not playable in PFS?

Here's a link to the Additional Resources Document.
It's the final authority on whether something is legal or not.

Hello! welcome to one of the most complicated parts of PFS.
And the institution.

Thats half the fun of RPGs...
What I would highly recommend, since you already have a character idea in mind, is to drop the gold you earned down to 500 gp and apply the chronicle to a brand new level 1 character. This will get you out of the dreaded "I'm level 1 i die in a stiff breeze" territory faster.

How to check if something is legal in PFS.
Step 1: Google the thing you want to see if its legal and archives of nethys.
I'll assume its the empirical investigator? Since thats what everyone goes with.. :)
Doing that gets you This
That Funny white X next to empiricist is the symbol of the open road: ie, the symbol of the pathfinder society. That means its pfs legal... or at least archives of nethys thinks it is.
If you want to be really sure, you see that the empiricist (or whatever you archtype you want) is in Source Advanced Class Guide pg. 100 (Amazon)
You then go to the additional resources listed above, and find the advanced class guide (ctrl +f is really handy for that, its a LONG list)
Archetypes: all archetypes on pages 75-133 are legal for play, except forgepriest, hex channeler, musketeer, mutation warrior, packmaster, primal companion hunter, primalist, spirit summoner, and steel hound. Hex channeler, mutation warrior, and primal companion hunter are now legal for play. The free crossbow by the bolt ace's crossbow maven ability is not made of any special material and is worth 22 gp if sold.
You can see that the advanced class guide is written as "everything is legal but...." and empiricist appears to be legal. (if you're looking for something else, you have to look )

Thank you for the link to the Additional Resource Doc. It shows that one of the two I was considering (Steel Hound) isn't playable. That makes the decision significantly easier! I'll build an Empiricist.
I'm presently playing an empiricist and think it is the best investigator. Having most of the skills, including perception, you will use a lot based off Int is great once you get through level 1.

It is important to own the resource. If money is tight, try to get a PDF.
Also, consider equipment. I usually try to have any character carry a ranged weapon, a reach weapon and a good melee weapon. (Remember, some creatures are resistant to different types of damage. So, maybe pick up a club (free) for those skeletons.)

I'm leaning toward a "MacGuyver" type of character. I'll carry a couple of small weapons, short sword and sling probably and bag full of random stuff...just in case! If the first scenario doesn't go well, I'll dump the junk for more traditional adventuring fare.
There's no chewing gum in PFS is there? A foil gum wrapper can be used in a million different ways!

It is worth noting that you must own the resource the item is from. In this case, you would need a copy of the Advance Class Guide. PDFs or book version counts. You then need to bring this resource with you when you play your character.
Welcome to PFS!
How does this apply if I want to play a PFS play-by-post? Obviously, it's not possible to prove ownership.
Then again, I've been considering creating a PFS character for pbp for a while now, but not having a scenario or any other PCs to co-operate with, I'm finding I can't even decide on a class.

PFS play-by-post is generally honor system. However, it's always possible to send your GM a photo of you surrounded by your hardcover Paizo books, wearing your reroll shirt or waving your portfolio.
I just sent one GM a picture of the undine boon I received to prove ownership.
Hmm
All of PFS is based on the honor system. The requirement to have/bring the resource is so that GMs unfamiliar with an item have the resource to refer too without asking them to purchase everything a player might use.
Photos, a screen print of your download page, or a copy of the PDF cover with your watermark are all ways to prove ownership online.

Small tip. Don't use the d20pfsrd name of the class. If you do I am going to assume you do not have the correct book. d20pfsrd renames any class that contains Golarion specific references, to avoid some sticky IP and license issues. It makes it hard for me to figure out I I am looking at the right class when I need to make a rules call, and it robs your character of flavor.

At low levels you may find that alchemical gear, you can craft the stuff yourself between adventures, will come in very handy and that may satisfy that impulse to MacGuyver stuff. But as time rolls on you will want to be a bigger contributor in combat than that. I'd plan ahead what you will be doing so you can invest you feats wisely. There are plenty of options so just find one you like and go with it.
