haste then fly

Rules Questions

Scarab Sages

Okay,I have a (hopefully) quick question.

I have no problems with a character casting fly and then getting hasted, allowing their fly speed to be affected by the haste spell.
But, what happens if the character is hasted and then casts fly. Does the haste affect this new mode of travel, or would the haste only affect the modes of movement the target had when haste was originally cast?

Opinions?

I'd allow it.

Haste says:
"All of the hasted creature's modes of movement (including land movement, burrow, climb, fly, and swim) increase by 30 feet, to a maximum of twice the subject's normal speed using that form of movement. This increase counts as an enhancement bonus, and it affects the creature's jumping distance as normal for increased speed."

I see nothing that says it only applies to those forms of movement a character has at the time of casting haste. It's an ongoing effect, enhancing movement rates for the full duration.

Some GMs might disagree, but I think it works fine.

Haste specifically calls out that all modes of movement are enhanced, including fly.

It wouldn't matter which order the effects happened.

Just know a hasted, flying character in medium/heavy armor still only flies at 40 speed, which isn't really that impressive against natural fliers.

And don't forget Fly checks! Most potions of fly only grant +2 Fly skill which for heavily armored folks is not nearly enough to be able to effectively hover and fight something in combat.

Since haste has a non-instantaneous duration, the order of effects doesn't matter.

You know, since 3E my group has said that Haste does not affect Fly as it is not one of the "creature's modes of movement," meaning it is not a natural mode of movement.

I really have not looked at it in a while since it has been run this way for 10 years plus. However, now I am doubting that earlier ruling. Maybe it was written different in a Pre-Pathfinder version, but I just do not see any justification for that in the CRB or PRD.

It looks to me that Haste should affect me even if I am under the effects of a Fly spell and not flying with wings and such. Does anyone else run it the way my group has or are we just out of step with reality here?

We have always run it that way, Hendelbolaf. A creature can fly is different than you gain flight as a movement mode.

I have to agree with Hendel; Fly is a spell in this case, not a mode of movement. I've never allowed it or assumed it.

It doesn't seem broken to allow it, though.

Paizo statblocks for creatures buffed with fly list it in their modes of movement.
