The Rivers Flow in Which Direction??

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Liberty's Edge

Hi All,

I have now idea where this topic should go, so I'll post it here and hopefully the moderators will work out the rest.

I am currently running the Carrion Crown AP and the Price of Immortality Mini AP. Both of which have something to do with Lake Encarthan. Taking a look at the map, one of my players, who knows a thing or two about geography, asked me the question - so which way do the rivers run?

This is not something that I can find anywhere!

I assumed that all rivers run down to the Lake, but where does the lake run-off go? Normally there would be another river that runs into the sea from there (by real world explanations anyway), but that's not shown on a map anywhere and is not explained away.

I thought that there might be an underground funnel into the negative energy plane or something near the Isle of Terror, but nothing!

Any assistance Paizo people?

Also, maybe someone needs to do a topography map of Golarion. I don't have the skills.

Not all real world lakes have rivers that exit them. The Great Salt Lake is one example, that is why it is salty.

Can I assume that this is what Lake Encarthan would be like? There appears to be no mention of that anywhere that I can find.

The Exchange

In other cases, the outlet is strictly subterranean - this is particularly likely in limestone country. In Golarion, there's even the possibility that Lake Encarthan feeds a river that runs down to the Darklands.

But that's based on a supposition, not canon.

While the rivers to south, west, and north of Lake Encarthan flow into the lake, it drains through the Sellen River to the east, at the border between Razmir and Kyonin. The Sellen eventually empties into the Inner Sea at Cassomir, on the border between Andoran and Taldor.

Grand Lodge

I'm pretty sure all the rivers flow into Lake Encarthan, except the Glass River that runs north of Kyonin into Kallas Lake and down the Sellen River into the Inner Sea by Cassomir.

They might all flow INTO the lake. There is historical precedent for this. Explorers lost their lives looking for the outlet of the great lakes system in africa - they combed the shores till they died never believing there might NOT be an outflow!!

Thanks all. I can see that now. Now if only someone could explain the river system flow chart in Ustalav, I'd be right for my Carrion Crown game. There really needs a map with that on it :)
