Avengers 2, spoiler (?)

I’m just going to go ahead and take the risk, and call it now – Peter Dinklage will be playing MODOK

Sovereign Court

They'll CGI his head in a big jar?

I thought Dinklage was supposed to be in Days of Future Past, not Avengers 2?

hehehehehe

Yes Dinklage is playing Arcade in Days of Future Past.

Seriously? I can't wait to check that out! He was one of my early X-men villains.

The only possible spoiler we have for the moment is Whedon talking about two new characters who are siblings. So everybody suppose it is Scarlet witch and Quicksilver.
I'd like to see Summer Glau as Wanda, or Eva Green!

Hmm, Wiccan and Speed? (Aside, I'd rather see Morena Baccarin as Wanda)

Most of my familiarity with Scarlet Witch comes from X-Men: Evolution, and I could easily see Summer Glau playing that angry/slightly unhinged version of the character.

My issue with Quicksilver (and all speedsters, really) is how he can't just automatically win almost any fight. You've got someone who can move faster than you can see, let alone react to. How do you even stop them?

There were already complaints regarding the first movie about the mehumes like Widow and Hawkeye being outclassed by the supers. I don't see how adding a speedster and a powerful mutant/sorceress to the mix is going to help that.

Not saying I'm against their inclusion, if Joss can make it work, it will be great. I'm just skeptical.

Many ways. One being guessing where they will be and punching there in a timely manner. Their speed will hurt them too.

They are outclassed. They are humans. Compared to a raging, indestructible force of nature, a literal god of thunder, a super soldier and a man flying around in a suit of armor that packs more punch then an armored battalion, how can a woman with martial arts training and a guy with a fancy bow even compare?

@Hama

Only if they don't have the reflexes/thought processes to keep up. Peter David really played with that in X-Factor, even coining Pietro Maxmimoff Syndrome. Now Jarvis (and face it, maybe Cap*) could tag him, Thor could call the lightning, etc. It also depends on how high his power level is. Even in the comics he's 'only' super sonic, not Wally West speeds.

Oooh, just thought of another super hero sibling set that Marvel *might* own the rights to. Auora/Northstar.

*

Spoiler:
I say Cap might, because his own reflexes are high end human/meta-human. If Quicksilver doesn't have physical combat training he has to 'tell' his body to strike instead of relying on muscle memory. In Seige he took down someone (Mister X?) because X always read his opponent's mind to know what move he was throwing. Quicksilver beat the tar out of him because while he could see everything Quicksilver was going to do, he didn't have the training/reflexes to react to that knowlege before being hit.

Actually I thought Black Widow and Hawkeye held up well with the other supers in the Avengers. Whedon did a good job of keeping them included throughout the movie. Their skill sets though lesser were none the less important to the team's success.

You are always going to have degrees of supers; the constant debate of which super is more super. I would give Thor and The Hulk a slight edge over Iron Man. And all three an edge over Captain America. Then Hawkeye a slight edge over Black Widow. The real debate is between Thor or The Hulk. I would give it to the Hulk.

The Avengers movie, maybe more so than any ensemble cast like it, did a masterful job of showing the value and importance of each team member.

Each team member? You mean not just the team members who have a dump stat?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I have to say that I was impressed at how well the first movie used Black Widow and Hawkeye, as well as Captain America. They may not have had the raw powers the others had, but they were with shown a high degree of intelligence and a remarkably versatile, but at the same time completely human, skill set that ensured that they had a place on the team. To me, they also helped a great deal in grounding the movie, keeping the plot from going straight into typical comic bookish, truly outlandish territory. Whatever they do with the sequel, I truly hope they keep that aspect.

Even Nick Fury, Agent Coulson and Agent Hill showed their worth in the Avengers. YMMV, but for me the Avengers is the best in the superhero movies so far.

Indeed, each character had a clear, distinct, and useful role, regardless of what that role was and whether or not that character was one of the headlining superheroes. To me, that was the biggest distinction I saw between it and all other superhero movies I've seen previews of, and a major part of why I actually enjoyed the movie when I really wasn't expecting to.

And they all got sufficient screen time. It was really timed well.

Oh, I think the first movie did a great job of giving everyone something to do and moments to shine. I've just seen a lot of grousing elsewhere about "Why are they even there?" re: Natasha and Clint (funnily enough, I seem to recall Clint raising a similar question to Natasha in The Ultimates comics) and I can't imagine adding two more very powerful characters is going to help that.

Sovereign Court

Because they were the founding members of the original avengers and some people are sticklers for tradition...

Actually, if they were doing founding members, the lineup would have been Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Ant Man and Wasp.

No Cap, until issue #4

You nerds.

As Terquem pointed out (ninja'ed me), no Cap until issue 4. But a very classic lineup is the 4 person team of Captain America, Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and the Scarlet Witch. That's pretty much the next whole line-up change after the originals when Thor, Iron Man, Ant Man, and Wasp are all leaving the Avengers (for the first of numerous times) to do other things. So I can certainly see adding Pietro and Wanda at some point in the franchise.

Whedon has a good solid history of doing ensembles well, so I wouldn't be too worried on that end. I would worry more about adding 2 characters in general, due to limited available screen time to fit everyone in, then the details of the characters being added.

I've go to admit it would have been fun to see a movie with the original Avengers, maybe without Antman and the wasp, probably with Cap. Then as the second or maybe third movie switch to "Cap's kooky quartet"

Sovereign Court

They're doing an Ant-man movie and a Black Panter movie in phase 3 though, but still, only several years away...

Which got a nod in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. (I still have that on the DVR, Cap taking on the entire team was one of the highlights for me.)

Avengers: EMH was great. Watching through the second season with my son now. A shame it was cancelled.

When someone mentioned that they had seen Agent Wendell Vaughn in the first movie, I was excited. I was hoping that Quasar would somehow show up in the next movie. Given that their next enemy is supposed to be Thanos, he would be perfect. But Scarlet Witch and Quick Silver?!?

Agreed, on both counts!

I've never been a huge Wasp fan, but she was pretty B-A in that show. I'd be more excited to see her and Ant Man in the next Avengers movie than I'd be to see Scarlet Witch and/or Quicksilver.

No need to suppose. I heard an interview with Whedon on Geek Time (Howard 101 on Sirius/XM) and he confirmed that it will be Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. He also said this is the only thing he is allowed to reveal for now.
