I have been wanting to combine the two for a while, I thought it would be a good fit. Is pure rogue better? or is there a different class that would mesh better with rogue? I want a rogue arch type, but I was told i could not longer select it at my level. I didnt get a chance to choose when I started because i didnt know about arch types at the time.

Rogue/Ranger would grant sneak attack, more skills, rogue talents that the Urban ranger would not grant.
More skills:
2 more for the rogue levelssneak attack:
big deal[/sarcasm]
rogue talents:
Wow[/sarcasm]
Colour me unimpressed.
The only reason i see for a rogue/ranger is a one level dip trapper ranger for a rogue who has lost trapfinding (but still wants to be able to disable magical traps) or for a ninja who wants trapfinding. Nearly anything takes power away from the ranger.

I never understood why people think rogue stink so much. I never played a character that could not benefit from sneak attack damage.

Are you using Rogue's Terrain Mastery talent and going into Horizon Walker? Rogue/Ranger/HW is a nice combo...against enemies from up to 3 types of terrain, at least. :)
It's in the APG, the same book as many of the ranger archetypes.
It requires Endurance (free feat for rangers) and 6 ranks in geography, nothing else. At levels 3, 6, and 9 they can choose one of their mastered terrains (a "better favored terrain," something else the class has you picking) to be a dominant terrain. Most notably with that, against any creatures that originate from that terrain, the Horizon Walker can use his Favored Terrain bonus like a favored enemy bonus (doesn't stack w/ favored enemy, but does stack with Ranger's Focus, hence my suggesting using Guide archetype). He also gets a new favored terrain at like 3/4 of his levels and each time can boost one terrain's bonus by +2 as normal. Then you factor in Rogue. It has in UC a talent to gain a favored terrain that you can take multiple times. Being a talent, that means not only can you take it every even rogue level, but also a a feat (Extra Talent). The rogue's version doesn't work like Ranger's, though... Each time you take it, it boosts ALL your favored terrains' bonuses by +2.
So...as you can imagine, against enemies of select regions, without even trying very hard you can end up with insanely high attack/damage bonuses. ;)
But you kinda suck against anything else. :(

Or you could go Urban Ranger+Guide+Skirmisher or Guide+Trapper
Anyway, I find using the SRD to be handy to in planning archetypes, since it has all the abilities and changes laid out in table format at the bottom of the link.

It really depends on what you want from the dip into Ranger. The "downside" to a Ranger is that class abilities don't really kick in until level 4 or 5. The trapper learns to set traps at level 5 and picks a new one every other level. Similarly a skirmisher gets hunters tricks at level 5 and then gets them every other level.
Other ranger classes get other abilities at level 4, such as animal companions, terrain bond for a Guide and spells (if you have a high enough wisdom score to get bonus spells at lvl 4 otherwise you get a 1st spell at lvl 5).
If you just want proficiency with martial weapons and bonus feats fighter would be a better short-term dip.
In a nutshell any dip into Ranger really requires 4-5 levels to get the good class abilities.
If you want better trap spotting, Bard has some archetypes that get the Rogue trapfinding / trap spotting ability with some bonuses the Rogue doesn't get.
At 2nd level, along with disable device, the Detective gets a +4 to detect illusions and the archeologist can disable devices in less time as a class ability. You'd also get a smattering of arcane spells. The 1st level Bard spells are...well...Bard spells, but the cantrips - detect magic, predestigation, light, etc. - can be very handy and you get those at 1st level.
