By RAW, a Fine creature can grapple a Colossal creature. Is that right?

Trip has a specification that allows you to only trip creatures no more than one size category larger. However, there is no such stipulation for grapple.

Is that an oversight?

Pixie-mania is running wild brother! OH YEAH! I'm gonna throw the grapple down on that Tarrasque! You better believe it, brother!

Grand Lodge

Sure you can, but you have to beat them by 16, and most colossal creatures have high strength scores and a high base attack. The odds of you properly grappling them is very low.

Agile Maneuvers!

Agiiiiiiiiiile Maneuuuuuuuuuuuuuuvers!

Of course when you grapple you lose 4 DEX and 2 to attack, which usually cancels out CMB and CMD. With Agile Manuevers as your dependency, you've got a -4 to maintain that grapple or pin, etc.

A pixie monk with greater grapple, under the effect of reduce person, though... it wouldn't be terribly effective, but it could perhaps work

Sovereign Court

That sounds ridiculous. I mean, what's it going to do? Hang on to it's finger? A fine creature grappling a collossal creature is like a fly grappling a 4 story building. It's impossible.

I would probably allow it and simply rule that a successful grapple resulted in irritating the colossal creature to the point of distraction. They would suffer the penalties for being "grappled" while they looked for the fine creature that was irritating them. A successful check to break the "grapple" was the creature swating it away and turning its focus elsewhere.

The irony is ants are incredibly strong, relative to their size. If they were even tiny, they’d probably kick the crap out of us. lol

Liberty's Edge

All the mechanics are built around player characters using core races. This situation is something that will never come up in any serious game. There will be weird anomalies when monsters vs monsters comes up, or when races besides core are used. The smallest the core gets is a druid wildshaping into a diminutive animal, which with the -3 size penalty to combat maneuvers cancels out the +3 dex bonus increase, the overall CMB will not realistically get high enough. The lowest CMD of a collosal creature is a single one with 41, then the rest are 49 to 64

If it somehow manages to make the roll, then perhaps it's applying a secret pressure-point hold, or something.

Yes, it's ridiculous. Lots of things in Pathfinder are ridiculous. So what, it's the same thing in movies. What, you thought it was really possible for an 80 pound Asian karate lady to kick some 400 pound (US) football-linebacker-looking-guy through a wall?
-Kle.

It actually happens all the time :p

Square cube law disagrees, humans have the 2nd most advanced musculature on the planet, it's just that most of the stuff that can eat us weighs twice as much as we do, or travels in bigger packs than we tend to when wandering their territory.

It's not that hard to build a character around this.

There's one in the party I Gm for right now.

I always figured you couldn't grapple more than one category larger than yourself. If that's not the case, I'll just make it so.

We're already circumventing that with enlarge person...

Anyway, if it's RAW, I would probably do some descriptive gymnastics to make it make sense. Not something I want to do every combat, but it's fine once in a while.

I'd allow it if the player can see a way to accomplish the desired feat, and I can agree that it could work.
A pixie could grapple to hang on to a dragon taking flight or lock a giants privates in a strangle hold, just to say.. the mechanics alone would not have me allow it, if something breaks any kind of credibility I am likely to disallow it.

I'm not quite sure what credibility has got to do with it. This is a fantasy world with magic, and monk can jump stupidly high. If having a halfling grapple a t-rex is what is stretching your imagination then I'd be worried.

Think of it this way, anyone with that degree of a grapple bonus is well into being superhuman, so they can pull stunts like bouncing bullets off their chest, it still results in hp loss, but no-selling like that is sure to scare the pants off any normals (read: probably no higher than 4the level) in the vicinity. Just like grappling a T-Rex would scare the pants off any normal in the vicinity would.

One could argue that when Luke grappled the AT-AT inThe Enpire Strikes Back it was bur Hurculean a feat.

Here's something I've just been made aware of:

Improved Savage Grapple (Ex)
At 5th level, the brutal pugilist takes no penalties to Dexterity, attack rolls, and combat maneuver checks when she has the grappled condition. She also is treated as one size larger than her actual size when determining whether she can grapple or be grappled by another creature.

Obviously, the intent is to have this ability be an exception to the non-existent size limitations on grapple.

Liberty's Edge

The size limit from trip may have been intended to be global, but never made it in the text.

Sovereign Court

I don't have a problem with it at all. As Thraxus points out, it doesn't say how the condition was achieved, so the DM can create from fluff to describe that if it's a problem for the group.

Well, FAQ it. :-)

Or it was to give them a small boost to the roll. FAQ'd.

I know for a fact I’m not the only one who has done the ‘OMG this bug won’t come off of me no matter how hard I flick it and it is managing to dodge all attempts to smash it dead!’ crazy-dance.

Additional fluff adjustments:

To move the opponent the fine-sized creature crawls toward a sensitive area causing the colossal opponent to instinctively move away. –Think bug moving up your arm toward your face. Does back peddling make the distance between your face and outstretched arm any harder for the bug to traverse? No, but you’ll do it anyway.

To pin an opponent the fine-sized creature is in (or close enough) to a sensitive area on the colossal creature making any move precarious, thus the ‘pinned’ condition. – Think bug on your eyelid. Can you theoretically move and act normally? Yeah. Are you going to do anything besides try and get it off? Not at all likely. If you do decide to try to make some other action, you are going to be very distracted and do so in such a way that it doesn’t cause the bug to get into your eye.

No, there are abilities that utilize grapple that have size restrictions. The Grab evolution from the Eidolon evolution list is one such ability: it can only gain a free grapple against a creature up to one size smaller than it.
