The gala inside the Chelish embassy appears to be in full swing, and as the faint light from the building falls upon the alleyway outside, Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin's mission briefing is hard to forget.
"Pathfinders," Valsin boomed out hours earlier in the briefing chamber within the Grand Lodge, "Zarta Dralneen no longer exists. She never existed. She's never worked for the Chelish embassy here in Absalom, and she's never been in charge of the Chelish Pathfinders. At least that's what I was told, repeatedly, to my face, through three layers of Chelish bureaucrats. I know those people, and the all knew Zarta. They didn't just forget about her. She's been 'disappeared'."
After a short break he continues. "I don't know where she went and I don't know who took her. What I need you to do for me is to go into the Chelish embassy and find out as much as you can by snooping around for a bit. I want to know where Zarta is, I want to know who took her, and I want to know why she was taken. We can't afford to offend Cheliax, so you'll have to infiltrate their embassy quietly. I've devised a cover story that should get you in the side door with orders to see the new Chelish ambassador. An ongoing diplomatic gala scheduled for the same time and a clever ruse by Venture-Captain Amara Li - who is also attending the gala - will keep the ambassador busy, but you'll have to act quickly if you want to secure the information we need before he arrives to meet you. You must get into the embassy, get what we need and get back out of the embassy without the Chelaxians ever catching on that we've been rooting around."
Valsin hands you packet. "Here is a packet of information that bears on Chelish interests in Sargava. It's legitimate intelligence that we probably would have passed on to Zarta eventually anyway and that we're willing to give up for free as our ticket into the building. You'll enter the embassy through the north entrance of the residential wing, where Chelish imperial security receives all of their informants. Even if you have a good cover story you might have difficulty getting past the guards there - if necessary, you'll have to resort to bribing your way through. Once you're in, the guards will likely make you wait for the ambassador when you tell them you have important information for him. Don't give it to anyone else, since once they have the information there will be no reason for them not to show you the door. Amara Li will keep the ambassador pinned down at the gala while you break out of the waiting room and snoop around. She will also meet you just before you enter the gala to cast a message spell on you, just in case you need to keep in touch during your mission. You just need to make your way to Zarta's chambers - tey're in the southwest corner of the residental wing, but you'll have to find a route that doesn't intersect with the gala's attendees or residents of the embassy. Try to get in and out in less than an hour. That's my best estimate at how long the gala and Li can keep the ambassador preoccupied. Once you've got the information and made it back to the waiting area, you just have to wait for the ambassador to find time to see you."
"My informants tell me that Ailenia Hospar, one of the clerks you'll likely run into at the embassy, is addicted to shiver. I've procured some of the drug for you to slip her if she initially proves less than accommodating. You may also have to deal with Anstrella Trelax, the pompous night-duty officer. Beyond that, what you'll face is beyond my knowledge. I've ordered for you to receive several tools that might help you in your mission. Good luck, Pathfinders."
Before you exid the Lodge you are given two scrolls of disguise self and two elixiers of hiding from the Pathfinder Society.
The Chelish embassy to Absalom is in the Ascendant Court, a part of the city better known for temples and cathedrals than for diplomatic and government buildings . The embassy is housed in what was once a large cathedral to Aroden, but which has been repurposed incompletely. The religious decorations and iconography in the grand chambers that the Chelaxians use to entertain visitors have been taken down and replaced with imperial symbols, Egorian school architectural flourishes , and Asmodean religious statuary. Much of the rest of the building, on the other hand, is devoted to private quarters, office space, interrogation rooms, and the like, and the s e areas have been modified in a sometimes slapdash fashion, with the original artwork merely painted over, ceilings lowered to more human dimensions, and walls added or removed as necessary. Thus, much of the embassy has a messy, disorganized appearance, somewhat at odds with the usual Chelish stereotypes of rigid structure and order. Eventually the whole cathedral will be done over in the traditions of Asmodeus and Thrune, but for now redecorating remains low on the priority list.
You are just outside the side-entrance to the Chelish embassy. The so-called "spy's entrance" is a nondes cript entrance in an alley that runs along the north side of the Chelish embassy.
Zymir al-Qa'im |
Greeting friends, I am Zymir al Qa'im, Sage of the Sands, Chronicler of the Cave of Aroden, Explorer of the Fallen Fortress, and Humble Pathfinder. I hope my knowledge and spells can be of assistance on this mission.
Zymir is a tall lanky Kelish man with a warm friendly smile but sharp piercing eyes. He caries himself with a very regal bearing even though he leans heavily on his staff as he walks.
Let me see what stories I can recall about this embassy, our missing Paracountess, or the people we might find inside.

"Hi Sir Zymir! I'm Vailis, an apprentice half-elf summoner of the Society. And this is Edie, my loyal eidolon friend and guardian". The humanoid shape beast with a sharp face like a bull looks at his new companions and adds a short and unemotional "Hi".
"Once inside the Embassy we can try ourselves to disguise as one of Cheliax officers and his guard with one alter self scroll, or we can try to get servants customes as witers or similar to gain freedom on moving around. We can even try to take the paracountess identity if anyone knows how was she, and misslead everybody to reveal what really happened to her". While talking, Edie gets a look at the Embassy at his mate signal, trying to get information about the entrance and posible emergency exits. Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
"Let's see if we can reveal the truth". Vailis adds while trying to push his mind to help Zymir in getting any single bit of relevant information.

Sebastian Mapplethorpe |
A Taldan man with large muttonchops and a long tan coat listened to the Venture-Captain's instructions intently, nodding to himself vigorously when he had finished, "Ah, you've chosen well, picking me for this particular mission, Venture-Captain Valsin. We shan't let you down!"
As the group walks towards the Chelish Embassy, he offers the following preamble, "Perhaps you are wondering why I said Venture-Captain Valsin had choosen wisely to pick me for this particular mission? Well, allow me to introduce myself, I am Sebastian Mapplethorpe, formerly of Oppara of the former Empire of Taldor. Before my...unfortunate...exile, I served as a detective and investigator for several municipal and imperial entities due to my unfailing mastery of logic and deduction.”
"Having knocked over the wrong stones one too many times, I found my services no longer in demand in my homeland, but I graciously accepted an invitation to join the Pathfinder Society-- an organization that truly appreciates the rigors of my intelligence. Perhaps you've heard of Aroden's Echo? The cavern I discovered on the isle of Kortos with the assistance of other junior Pathfinders?"
"In any case, I am sure we can swiftly come to the bottom of the matter of this disappearance, assuming she's still alive. Although I've not had the pleasure of meeting the Paracountess in the flesh so to speak, her abilities and *ahem* appetites are quite legendary so there could be any manner of circumstances contributing to her disappearance. I look forward to working with you all to discover the truth."
"Although we can go about infiltration in a number of ways, I don't suggest we try disguising anyone as the Paracountess herself since they would immediate draw unwanted attention to ourselves. Perhaps Amara Li might offer some helpful advice to fit it at this particular occasion."
He finally stops speaking in order to prepare an extract of Disguise Self.
Zymir al-Qa'im |
I do believe we must have meet before Master Maplethorpe, for I was one of the Junior Pathfinders on the mission into "Aroden's Echo". My recollection of who discovered the cave though seem to be at odds with yours as I believe it was a halfling by the name of Janira Gaavix who originally found the cave and lead the team back to its entrance.
Not sure how we want to play it, having gone on the same adventure. I'm cool with playing it like we remember each other, don't remember any of the other people on the expedition, or we both remember the expedition but we somehow had the same adventure at the same time but did not see each other's groups (parallel universes!).
As for the Paracountess I have had the pleasure of meeting her, here at this embassy actually. I will say that from my short encounter I now believe all of the stories I've heard about Mistress Dralneen.
Vailis |
"I'm glad we can count on your abilities Sebastian. I agree we can better first talk with our contact. Let's approach the guards then and see if we can get access to the building".
Sebastian Mapplethorpe |
"If we had met before Brother al-Qa'im, I am quite certain that I would recall it. However, Miss Gavix had mentioned she had other experiences with the caverns before assisting us so perhaps that is the particular encounter you are recalling. After we finish our investigation, I'll be happy to go over the details with you in depth in case there is some passing acquaintance I'm not immediately aware of."
He nods to the summoner, "Yes, Mr. Vailis, I believe with the natural charisma that you and Brother al-Qa'im possess we'll easily talk our way past the guards, but first Venture-Captain Li."
Zymir al-Qa'im |
[ooc]Any chance the Venture Captain Valsin was able to provide us with a map of the interior layout of the embassy? Where are we meeting Amara Li?[ooc]
Ah, I see Master Mapplethorp. Well as our colleague Vailis said, it is a pleasure to accompany you on this mission.
Vailis, it would seem that you and I will be voice of this team, while Master Mapplethorp will be our eyes and ears, and these to gentlemen will be our muscle. I do wonder though how your companion, Edie was it, will fit in during such a delicate mission. No offence but he is not exactly conspicuous and I do not quite under stand how you will disguise him with one of these scrolls of Disguise Self.
Vailis |
The bull faced biped with long claws turns around and look at the group with his deep green eyes as he recognizes people is talking about him.
"Let me tell you Sir Zymir your worries about my companion are unnecesaire. Such is the nature of our bond that he can only exist in this world through my conscious imagination which unifies the fibers of mater and dreams. Would I get unconscious, he will vanish in the ether of living consciousness. Shall we not convince them he is my guard; I can make him disappear as easily as I can make vanish the air in my lungs, just to recall him through ritual of focusing in his shape for no more than one minute. And case there is no time for such a ritual, you should know I am not undefended as I am holder of many tricks" Vailis calmly states with a weird elfish accent, adding in the end "And if desired, I can well use that scroll over him as such is our bond that we are two faces of the same coin". Eidi nods with an unfeeling expression.
Zymir al-Qa'im |
How fascinating, I do not believe I have ever encountered such magic in my studies. So this creature...I mean Eidi. Zymir pauses to give the bull headed figure a respectful bow, So, this powerful bond you both share is it Arcane or Divine in nature? That is if you do not mind me inquiring. Edie, do you exist on this realm at the bidding of Vailis or do you wish to be here and this special bond just facilitates your manifestation? I do not mean to pry, I possess a curious mind that is ever in search of new information.
Argus Keld |
A gruff and travel-worn dwarf moves up to the group. His blonde hair and beard are trimmed neatly, and his skin has a sun-darkened color. His nose seems... off, as if it has been broken, possibly repeatedly, and not set or healed properly. A well used chain shirt covers his barrel chest, along with a bandolier filled with a few vials. His hands are wrapped in soft fabric while a battleaxe and cestus hang from his hip.
He looks around the gathered group, his dark eyes taking each person in.
Pardon the delay. The name's Argus. Truthfully, fighting is more my tankard of ale, never been that good at talking to folks. So I'll give what aid I can in that matter, but if something needs to go down, point me at it.
Zymir al-Qa'im |
Well meet Argus, now our party is complete. Hopefully your services will not be necessary but as we are all pathfinders we all know that violence is often unavoidable.
Vailis |
"Welcome Argus, don't worry about the delay, as we were just planning our first steps". Looking impressed at the heavy body of the new mate, Vailis adds "And don't worry, your tools... I mean skills, will be usefull as well in case the information do not flow through means of nice words".
And interested in Zymir's conversation he continues "I am still trying to understand the nature of our bond as it is kind of new for us, but as far of my knowledge, it is Arcane in its nature."
Eidi nods while adding "Although I do not feel forced to be here, I would rather say it is product of destiny. We were made for each other, and it is through the thoughts of my mate that I can take shape in this material world. Have you ever felt such a bond with any destiny in this world as well Sir Zymir?".
Sebastian Mapplethorpe |
"A pleasure indeed, Mr. Argus. I find a little muscle often help to push along an investigation. You and Mr. Freelan should make a fine pair for that purpose."
Argus Keld |
Nodding Argus looks over at the human, the small toothpick flipping between his teeth.
Sounds good to me. Don't mind a fight, but don't mind getting through things without having to get in a scuffle. But in case the need does arise, the dwarf fishes into a pouch at his side, pulling out a small wand. Any of you folks use one of these. The spell in it, will heal. Don't know much about them myself, but it's always handy to have around.
Argus will offer up his wand of healing to anyone that can activate it.
Zymir al-Qa'im |
What an intriguing questions Edie, one I have actually spent quite a lot of time pondering, though I must admit I never put it into such terms. You have provided me with a wealth of new perspectives in which to analyze my 'destiny' as you say. To answer you question though I guess I would have to say that, yes I do feel a bond, so to speak, with this reality.
Zymir turns to address the other in the party, (the ones that will listen that is), growing both more excited and animated as he continues.
You see I have found that our very reality is comprised not of objects and creatures but of ideas and experiences. It is through these that our world takes shape and is given meaning, what most people refer to as perspective. Perspective varies for each individual creature and as such the reality of this world is somewhat malleable. By using a form of divine magic[/], so to speak, one can manipulate an individuals perception of reality. I have found that I am 'bond' to a form of this [i]magic, and, while for the most part it drives my life, I have learned to harness its power. By using stories and lore to influence other's perspectives I can shape the world around me, much as a wizard can with arcane might or a priest can though the power of his deity.
Zymir pauses to catch his breath and to let his insight, sink in.
Mr Angus, I can carry your wand for you if you like, though I due have a similar one of my own and it might be prudent to perhaps spread such healing magic out.
Sebastion, do you have a CLW wand?
Sebastian Mapplethorpe |
Distracted by his own thoughts, Sebastian appears to pay little heed to the conversation between Zymir and Vailis. However, once the oracle politely refuses Angus' wand, he says, "Excellent suggestion, Brother al-Qa'im, I'll be happy to keep Mr. Angus' wand on my person and only use it judiciously as needed. I haven't had the opportunity to acquire such a magical healing device myself as of yet. I'm afraid relocating to such an expensive city as Absalom has taken it's toll on my savings."
GM Baerlie |
Sorry for the delay, but now it's starting :)
The Venture-Captain did not provide you with a map of the embassy and you will not meet Amanda Li personally. She will be busy keeping the embassador pinned down so you have enough time to search the embassy.
While you are waiting at the spy entrance several people in fine cloths are passing and heading for the main entrance.
At the spy entrance you see one guard on duty.
Zymir al-Qa'im |
Understood Venture-Captain Li. Whispers Zymir, then in a slightly louder tone, The Venture-Captain has made contact. We need to proceed now.
The Half-elf, though leaning on his staff, walks confidently down the ally towards the spy entrance and right up to the on-duty guard.
Speaking with an air of importance and in a fast paced manner he address the guard.
A fine good evening to you. I am Zymir al-Qa'im, Sage of the Sands, Chronicler of the Cave of Aroden, Explorer of the Fallen Fortress, and Humble Pathfinder. It is this last title that brings me and my companions to the embassy tonight. We have very important information for the Ambassador, secured by the Society, in regards to matters he will find most exciting. While I understand there is a Gala tonight I fear that the time sensitive nature of the information I possess can not wait until a more opportune time. If you would please grant us entrance to the embassy and secure us an audience with the Ambassador we would be greatly indebted to you. Zymir finishes with a small respectful bow.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Yuck, can you use rerolls on PBP? I have the character folio :)
Argus Keld |
Argus ponders Zymir's speech for a moment. Huh, never thought about it that much, but I don't see the world quiet the way you do. I guess it does make some sense though, depending on a person's own beliefs, thoughts, upbringing, they can see the same thing in a different way.
Sounds like a good idea to spread the healing around. Had a few close calls in my younger days that I don't want to repeat. Feel free to use it as you see fit. Argus then hands over the wand to Sebastian.
Upon hearing Zymir acknowledgement to the captian, Argus grins and rolls his shoulders and neck, several pops can be heard.
Alright, lets go.
Vailis |
Asserting Zymir's words and waving a platinum coin where no-one but the guard can see, Vailis says "Let me insist in the importance and urgency of this mission. The Pathfinder Society is in possession of very relevant information for Cheliax interests in Sargava, and the Embassador will be deceived if we don't hand this information as fast and possible ". Then staring grievously at the guard he adds " I hope you understand this is sensitive information we cannot risk to be delivered in other way but personally in the hands of the Ambassador. We don't mind waiting for her to be available tonight. Just let us in to somewhere comfortable and out of curious looks from the Gala assistants, please".
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Sebastian Mapplethorpe |
"You made contact?" Sebastian asks Zymir incredulously, "Would you care to debrie..." His next question is stopped short as the oracle moves to talk to the guard. "Hmpf."
After listening to the attempts of others to influence the guard, Sebastian adds in his own two copper pieces in an attempt to aid them, "Clearly this is a matter of extreme importance, I'm sure the Ambassador and your superiors would appreciate and ultimately reward your timely and immediate attention in this matter."
Diplomacy aid another: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (12) - 1 = 11
GM Baerlie |
While the guard is still sceptic after hearing Zymir's request, the words of Vailis and Sebastian let him believe that your story is true. He opens the gate and lets you in. "Come in, take the stairs to the door over there. Behind that door is the reception room." he says pointing at a door.
Map created, please see the link above the campaign tabs.
Zymir al-Qa'im |
Zymir enters and heads up the stairs.
Thank you my friends, I seem to have stumbled over my own words.
Then in a whisper, We have made it into the emissary and are making our way to the reception room
Vailis |
Following inmediatly his words, Vailis and Eidi close up Zymir, opening the door up the stairs and looking around the reception hall.

Perception (Eidi): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
"Don't take it bad Lord Zymir, you talked good. He seemed to just need some extra preassure" tells Vailis while giving a smile at his mate.
Afterwards they observe carefully at the people around the hall.
Sense motive (Vailis): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (11) + 0 = 11
Sense motive (Eidi): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
In a much lower tone, Vailis adds "Ok, let's figure out what's the most direct route to the southwest chambers without passing by the Gala".
GM Baerlie |
The red paint that covers the walls of this high-ceilinged chamber does little to hide the raised outlines of ancient religious mosaics that once decorated this former temple. Behind the chamber's large and imposing desk sits a woman in clerk's clothing. The woman Looks at you and says. "Well, you are obviously no gala guests. Why are you here?"
Vailis |
Vailis waits a second to take breath with a couple of coughings and looks at the woman with an urgent and serious expression "Greetings Milady. We are Chelysh informants comen to deliver secret information regarding interests in Sargava. We are to hand this information to the Ambassador only by personal hand" Then looking at the people around "You seem to be runing busy tonight. What's this huge event you have in hands? We don't want to bother you or the Ambassador, we can wait for her at her chambers as much time as needed".
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
GM Baerlie |
Rerolls in PbP work like in RL, you do them and I believe you that you have a character folio.
"Well, nobody is going to enter the chambers of the ambassador without her permission. The usual process is that you hand the information over to me or the night officer on duty. If the Information is really important it will be passed to the ambassador."
Sebastian Mapplethorpe |
Sebastian stands quietly, considering how he might slip the dose of shiver to the woman as per Valsin's instructions.
Is there any obvious way to give the woman a dose of the drug discreetly and what would be the necessary roll(s)?
Vailis |
Vailis closes by Sebastian face and whispers "Lord Sebastian, this might be a good moment for your plan. She might be more seduced by your substances offer than by our tongue".
Zac Freelan |
Zac releases the handle. Sorry, but I was told by voices I keep hearing that we have to adventure in this building And Zac is being serious when he says this implying that he either heard it from a deity or that he is crazy.
Sebastian Mapplethorpe |
"Ah, forgive my associate, he's a little overzealous in completing our task. I can imagine your work as a clerk can be a little overwhelming at times. Perhaps a gift might make you inclined to be more accomodating to our request?" Sebastian asks, indicating the small vial of shiver in his left hand. "I trust we will both be discreet in this matter."
Recalling other incidents in dealing with addicts, Sebastian uses this knowledge to be more convincing.
Diplomacy: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18 +
Inspiration: 1d6 ⇒ 1 = 19
Spent 1 Inspiration pool point
Argus Keld |
Following the others into the room, Argus's eyes traces the lines of the building, his mind working on how the supports and structure all fit together.... and how you could bring it all down if you needed too.
Once in the room, he watches as the other begin to try to talk with the clerk, making sure to keep his ears and eyes open for any trouble coming.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
GM Baerlie |
The clerk looks at Sebastian, then around the room, at the vial and takes it. "I don't have the status to summon the ambassador, but I can call the duty officer. Please wait here for a moment" She leaves the room through the door in the south wall and returns after a minute with another woman.
Anstrella Trelax is dressed much more finely than the lower functionaries, and wears an imperial dress uniform. She is striking in red and black and looks down her nose at you. "So you have some important information I heard? If you don't have an apointment with the ambassador I'm afraid you can't meet him today. But you can hand it to me and I will pass it on."
Everything is normal to Argus.
Zymir al-Qa'im |
Zymir gives the woman a very formal bow,
Greatings, I am Zymir al-Qa'im, Sage of the Sands, Chronicler of the Cave of Aroden, Explorer of the Fallen Fortress, and Humble Pathfinder. Unfortunately, that is not possible. This information is both time sensitive and highly classified. We were dispatch from the Grand Lodge with very strict instructions to hand this over tonight and only to the ambassador himself. We understand that the Ambassador is busy with the affairs of the gala of the moment but we are willing to wait for him to mind a moment to see us and I assure you we will not take much of his time.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Vailis |
Vailis closes his fist and lips in angriness by how much protocol layers are to be overpassed to talk with the Ambassador. Nevertheless he remembers the importance of the mission and tries to relax while observing how the words of Zymir take effect.
Bluff: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Then he adds "We undestand your job and want not to jump over it, but have clear instructions we cannot oversee. We don't mind waiting for the Ambassdor as we don't mind for you to be there once we deliver the information. And if our presence disturbing the Gala is your concern, you don't have to worry, we can wait in a quiter place out of the looks of foreigners, we will not be offended by the treatment".
Diplomacy aid: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Sebastian Mapplethorpe |
"I assure you Ms. Terlax, the task we are undertaking is of the utmost importance, we must speak to the Ambassador directly. I'm certain he will look upon your efforts to assist us in a most grateful manner." Sebastian adds, but the woman's pomposity only enhances his own.
Diplomacy (aid another): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
Zac Freelan |
Zac pulls his allies aside and whispers when she is too far away that we knock her and any guards unconcious, dealing nonlethal damage if nothing else works.
Argus Keld |
It would be faster, but then there'd be evidence. We don't want any problems. I'm as anxious as you to do something, but lets let those with silver tongues do their magic.
Argus whispers back to Zac as he listens to the conversation and decides to add his piece, hopefully pushing the duty officer enough to let them by.
Look lass, we can't just hand over this information. As my associate here said, the information is sensitive and we've been given strict orders to only hand this over to the ambassador. You wouldn't want us breaking our orders now would you?
Diplomacy Aid: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
ummm wow, sorry guys.
GM Baerlie |
"Well, if the information is so critical I will call him. Please follow me to the waiting room, it will take some time. He's busy meeting the gala guests right now." the lady in red and black says and leads you to another room "Please wait here, the ambassador will be here in about 60 minutes." she continues and closes the door behind you and leaves. A2
The room is sparsely furnished with only a few old chairs and a couch. Twoo doors - one to the east and another to the west.
A few minutes later you hear a key being turned in a lock and the door to the east opens a little bit.
Vailis |
Vailis clearly seems satisfied once in the room. "Wow, we finally did in. I have heard tones of dirty things about Chelysh tastes, guess if they are true." he looks at the clearly rich room "They seem to have some money here. I guess we shall try to get to the south west alley now. Has anybody been here before?" Then he heards the eastern door opening "What's that going on there?" and peers out through the slightly open door.

Can we make K. local or other kind of roll to guess the Embassy configuration in order to establish a feasible safe path to the SW chambers?
