Homebrew and House Rules

Inner Black
Source: Azothath's Homebrew
Price: 4 fl-oz flask of 2 doses 2gp, 16 fl-oz bottle of 8 doses for 7gp.
Weight: 5 oz, 20 oz respectively.
Ctgr: Alch Remedies
Description
this opaque tan, pink, or black nappe tonic is a boon to peptics and sneaks. Each 2 oz dose turns mouth, teeth, sclera black for 4 hrs and (later) stools. It relieves mild heartburn, acid reflux, diarrhea providing a +5 crcm bonus vs stomach/ingested related poisons, intestinal diseases and parasites, ingested sickened & nauseated conditions for 1 hr. It provides a +1 crcm bonus to stealth(in Illumination dim or dark) and disguise(to appear old, sick, cursed, or non-human) for 4 hr.
It is recommended to take no more than one dose per 4 hours and stagger usage in two week periods. Overdosage within 2 hours requires a Fort 8 save else become staggered every other round over 6 rounds during next exertion(combat) and suffer constipation that day. Continual use (4 consecutive failed saves) results in mild mineral poisoning (-1 Con non-stacking penalty) for two weeks.
Construction
Craft Alchemy DC 16 using materials: willow bark, tea(green or black), bismuthinite(bismuth), kaolinite, brucite(magnesium), sea shell, lamp black or anthracite, pectin, henbane, and of course 5% sweet birch sap, pigment or dye and flavoring. 16 oz costs 2.2gp and usually takes 1 week.

It mainly affects the digestive system, so may not affect Brain Welks.
The GM is the final judge.

GG - I'm sure Lawrence's Welks will be just fine... anna one anna two...

It's been fun, best of luck...

The initial qualities make me think of essence of darkness from The Complete Thief's Handbook (2nd Edition). The ability to become completely black including teeth and eyes when imbibed. That one gets destroyed in sunlight and can be used to make a dye. It is also unstable and bursts into darkness if struck.

This one goes to a more internal route than that item, with discussion of health and such and overimbibing. It was always a rather unique item, good to see something like it.

Inner Black's formulation is based on a real life pink off the shelf product (with other common remedies) and it's -reasonably- accurate and low carb. The side affects are also similar, and thus the name. I have a funny sense of humor that way thinking how old alchemists would concoct "modern" remedies and catchy names based on side effects turning them into a feature/bonus. And NO, you should NOT attempt to make or imbibe the above.

Ultimate Equipment had Wismuth Salix based on the same remedy.

Generic name is (usually) bismuth salicylate, and is frequently dyed pink to make it more appealing. As Azothath said.

... and the above addresses (IMO) the only valid mechanical critique at the time, the cost effectiveness.
English prose & grammar advice is always appreciated as different writers have different tastes & styles. I tend to be a technical writer/editor.
Then there are the usual random comments and some engage my grumpy side.

Little confused:

I am a little lost. I only see Goth Guru's response, where he makes a joke about brain welk's, which you come back with the funny line about Lawrence Welks, which I thought was funny. Then you post another one saying it was fun. I didn't see anyone else post. My post just mentioned how I enjoyed seeing your item and how it reminded me of one from 2nd Edition Complete Thief's Handbook, in that it turned skin, teeth, and sclera black. Not really random, since your first line is that it's a boon to sneaks, which is right on topic.
-------------------------------------------------

I didn't know you only wanted mechanical critiques, you didn't say that. I guess GG's post was a bit random, but you responded in jest back. I don't see who you are grumpy at.

If you only want mechanical critiques, I guess, uhhh...
The wording that says don't use it more than once every four hours doesn't really mesh with the overdose effects, which only occur if imbibed within 2 hours of each other, which is highly unlikely since the effects last 4 hours other in a sheer accidental case. And the continual use failure penalty (4 consecutive failed saves) is highly, highly unlikely, not just because they'd have to either be purposefully doing it, or have a horrific Fort save (DC 8).

Now, it's entirely possible you have that designed that way just in case they find a 16oz bottle and down it all, and I find that deviously clever, but that still would only be three more saves for the extra doses (we will assume the bonus to imbibed poisons and stomach ailments do not apply to these saves), and they'd have to fail them all in a row.
Also, I am not sure what the constipated condition would really do in most mechanical senses. In a non-mechanical way, I thought it was a fine item and post.

I'm just chatting as this thread is active AND it is my post. Otherwise I've effectively withdrawn from PF & these boards to focus on my own work.

I post to hear other peoples opinions in a timely manner. After 30 days it seems too late in a practical manner. People weren't interested. It is okay.

There are really just 3 types of critiques a) mechanical & functional, b) stylistic & thematic using language, c) off topic and random or (snarky) humor.

I generally don't comment about posters or their implied motivations as that gets social & personal. I do understand that posting with this moniker can draw attention and opposing responses, I used that recently. I just add problematic posters to my 'do not respond' list and don't respond to their threads or posts. *This* thread has been the exception. It's just chat.
With my response to the random post I tried to funnel my annoyance into something humorous rather than the original acerbic post as I think having to be moderated is embarassing, almost worse than posting dumb comments like an ad bot.

con't.
I do understand trying to slyly lampoon an incompetent corrupt official, but...

what?
Greatest Most Effective Ever...

My comment was in reference to my homebrew monster further detailed in Goth's freak show. I realize I have not added to it recently. A Brain Welk is a usually lawful evil aberration that when implanted in the skull, pushes aside the prefrontal lobes, taking over the being. It's spawn infiltrates the immune system making the creature immune to all mundane diseases and other parasites. They can reach 20 int., wis., and charisma. They can telepathically control lesser members of their species. This is why there is only one fully developed Welk in any particular being.

If a Welk is not removed before 24 hours, their spawn are infiltrated in the body, and another Brain Welk will grow in the skull if that one is removed. Although a new Welk will take on the hosts memories and personality quirks, they will still have a superior attitude. The Pharaohs were founded by these creatures, but something caused them to leave Golarion. Some of their magic tech remains behind.
