So I pioneered my new examplar in yesterday's PFS game and had a good time. But a light hammer with hurl at the horizon still has only 35ft range increment.

What are some ways to extend that range?

Rogue archetype strong arm (+10 range)
Ranger archetype far shot (x2 range)

And the pseudo-extensions as well.

Ranger grants Hunt Prey upon Dedication, which ignores first range increment penalty.

Rogue also has Far Throw, which changes the -2 penalty of range increments into a -1.

Hunh, AoN search reveals the L20 Impossible property rune. Almost hiding in there, is "If it's a ranged weapon or thrown weapon, its range increment is doubled."
As a mod to the weapon, that applies first, before any other special throws, etc. Still costs a ludicrous 70,000 gp, so I cannot imagine it being used that often. A legit chance no player has ever purchased one in real gameplay, lol.

The Featherlight Fletching whetstone is more feasible, a 20 gp consumable to double a weapon's range increment for 1 min.

Ranger MCD also gives Hunt Prey so you can ignore the penalty for the 2nd range increment, giving you 70' w/o penalty which should cover nearly all combats until 8th when you can pick up Far Shot for 140'. Though in this case you might not want/afford Hurl at the Horizon at all, as you'll have 50', then 100'. (Note that these ranges barely make the weapon comparable to a generic bow w/o investment, so you should find a good use for your free hand because that's a thrower's main perk over other ranged weapons.)

Rangers also can take Quick Draw which some throw builds like in tandem with a Thrower's Bandolier (avoiding the need for a Returning Rune, perhaps to get a damaging Rune instead). Unsure how well that'd interact with Ikons though.

A simpler route would be to get access to a boomerang (Uncommon) for its 60' range (still 1d6 bludgeoning), which needs little to no range boost.

IMO the main strength of Hurl at the Horizon is you can toss d12 weapons, not its meager +10' range increment. With a Ranger MCD, you'd get to 60' w/o penalties. There'd be issues with putting a Returning Rune on it though or using the bandolier. I suppose you could put the Ikon on the weapon so it qualifies for the bandolier, then put Returning on the Bandolier, and ignoring anything else in the Bandolier except for niche uses.

Ranger is pretty interesting yeah.

I do think I'll stick with the hammer since it's also a nice melee weapon and you can only have so many ikons. And I've got the boomerang in mind for a club fighter.

Why 'start' as a exemplar when you could start as a precision ranger, MC into exemplar. At L4 you take hurl at the horizon and now any 2H weapon can be a thrown weapon (15ft range or 30ft with hunt prey, which you're doing anyways to get the precision damage). At L6 you take far shot and now you can throw greatswords 60ft.

My personal favorite is a scythe + noble branch as the transcendence lets you follow up a strike with guaranteed damage at range (good for bosses where your -5/-10 MAP strikes will be unlikely to hit). You get the +2 dmg/weapon dice, a nice deadly dice, and tossing a scythe 60 ft is terrifying.

Otherwise you could pick a dueling spear (1d8 only, but finesse for switch hitting), or another 1D10 spear/pole-arm (there aren't any 1D12 unfortunately). You could also even use a 1D8 lance on an animal companion and nab a +2 circumstance bonus to damage per weapon damage dice if your mount moves 10ft which is equivalent to hitting with a 1D12 weapon + a deadly dice) or with gravity weapon which is another +2 status damage per weapon dmg dice for your first weapon attack per round.

You can make it work with the gleaming blade ikon as well to get 1D12 weapons or other options (e.g., elven blade for finesse/forceful).

Other than Exemplar Dedication being one of the most commonly banned feats in the game, anyway.

Read OP's post. They are playing PFS... so they could use the exemplar archetype once. Anyways...

I'm set on playing exemplar, I like the character concept.

An Enkindled Carnival:
I found a cute iron souvenir statuette of a Berlin bear of perfect size to be a mini in a local thrift shop. So after we played An Enkindled Carnival and saved the dancing bears, I decided one of the cubs got Godsrained on, awakened, and imprinted on the Pathfinder Society. Berlin the Brave is a hammer-throwing talking bear with a victor's wreath (that weird hat in the picture in the scenario).
