Magus wave of mutilation ability

Product Discussion

Okay just a quick question on this ability. Pretty much sold me on playing the magus class if it works the way I want. All I want to know is if I can use it with spellstrike. That's all I need. Thanks!

Prerequisite: Magus 6

Benefit: The magus can spend 1 point from her arcane pool as a swift action transforming a single cut of her weapon into a scything wave of energy that tears through her enemies’ ranks. She unleashes magical force in a single sweep of her weapon in a 30-foot cone. Roll damage for her attack as normal except the damage type is changed to force and apply it to all targets in the cone’s area. Her opponents can make Reflex saves (DC 10 + half her magus class level + her Intelligence modifier) for half damage.

Looks poorly written. What type of action is this? I can't find this ability in any of the rulebooks.

This seems like it would require a standard action, in which case you wouldn't be able to use it with spellstrike or spell combat. But because it's so poorly written, I'm not sure.

Spellstrike (Su): "At 2nd level, whenever a magus casts a spell with a range of “touch” from the magus spell list, he can deliver the spell through any weapon he is wielding as part of a melee attack."

Is Wave of Mutilation a spell? Did you cast it? Is it on the magus spell list? Does it have a range of "touch"?

If the answer to any of those questions is "No" and the ability doesn't have special text that says it works with Spellstrike, then it doesn't work with spellstrike.

I think he wants to know if you can spellstrike through the wave.....

I'd say no. There is no melee or touch attack roll associated with it, just like you can't use Color Spray or Burning Hands with spellstrike. It would also be a waste if you could, because spellstrike focuses the spell's effects onto the single target only, thus you'd lose the 30' cone.

Edit: Are you asking if you can use Wave of Mutilation as a swift action and still have a full attack option left to do a normal spellstrike and spell combat? The way it's written, I think you could, and it's a much more interesting combo.

It's from the srd. It's a third party rule. It says that it costs only a swift action. So I don't see why I couldn't swift wave and then spell strike attack. My question is that it says weapon dage is what gets coned. I was wondering I spell DMg would stack

Wait Wait Wait....Magi have an ability that lets them channel the artistic genius of Frank Black and the Pixies?

Fascinating...

I think what the OP is trying to say is:

Can I cast shocking grasp, then spellstrike to deliver the shocking grasp as normal, BUT, now burn a swift action to use this Wave of Mutilation ability to transform the spellstrike shocking grasp attack into the cone.

Thereby turning not just the physical attack but the entire shocking grasp into a cone attack, also transforming the shocking grasp electrical damage into force damage and allowing a save against all of it as a whole.

My first answer....this is why our table doesn't allow 3rd party material.

My second answer, it really is not clear at all and I think you would most likely have to ask your DM. I would say no, because the spellstrike isn't part of the actual attack, it is just delivered by the attack.

I'd ask in the product thread for whatever is the source of this ability.
