What is the Crescent Cross?

I'm trying to wrap my brain around what this thing is. It's a one-handed hand crossbow, I get that, but you can also do melee damage? Is it just a hand crossbow you can hit someone with? Then it has a capacity of 3 bolts, but it isn't a repeater. Is it based on something somebody cooked up during the Renaissance or something? It sounds so weird, like the Apache revolver.

There's a picture of it in the book and on aonprd. It's an arm mounted crossbow with a crescent blade mounted in front of limbs where a stirrup might be on a normal crossbow.

The two extra bolts seem to sit in their own grooves on either side of the firing bolt.

It's unclear from the picture if there's any kind of mechanism for switching bolts (the firing mechanism itself seems to be drawn incorrectly and doesn't connect to anything) and it's unclear what the transforming aspect of the combination weapon is.

I don't think it's based on anything it's just a combination of an arm mounted crossbow and an armblade.
