Adjusting summoner spells

Back to playing my old summoner have a long hiatus from the character.

Just leveled up to level 7, and don't recall what I am allowed to do in terms of updating my spell repertoire for the new level. I've reread the class entry, but seem to be having some difficulty wrapping my head around it.

Can anyone help walk me through it real quick?

Because a 7th level summoner gains 4th-rank spells and loses 2nd-rank spell slots, I believe the following happens:
1) "Each time you get a spell slot (see Table 2–4: Summoner Spells per Day), you add a spell of the same level to your spell repertoire." Add two 4th-rank spells to the character's repertoire.
2) "Any time you lose a level of spell slots, you lose two spells in your repertoire as well. These can come from spells you already know or out of the number of new spells you're learning." Remove two spells of any rank from the character's repertoire. You may want to keep a lower-rank spell that can be heightened instead of gaining a new 4th-rank spell.

And on top of that I can swap out a known spell for another of the same rank, as usual for spontaneous casters?

Yup Dragonchess is correct.

The text tells you to add two spells of the same rank as you gained spellslots, then remove two spells of any rank, even pointing out that these can be the ones you just learned.

So if you really wanted to you could just ignore the two spells you were supposed to gain and just keep your repertoire the same.

I think so?

As you gain new spells in your repertoire, you might want to replace some of the spells you previously learned. Each time you gain a level and learn new spells, you can swap out one of your old spells for a different spell of the same level. If it's a level at which you lose a set of lower-level slots, you can replace the two in either order. You can also instead swap a cantrip. You can also swap out spells by retraining during downtime.

It sounds like that. But you are limited in that you can only swap spells of the same ranks, so Fireball could be swapped for Blindness, but not fly, Nor could it be swapped for Fear from what i've understood despite fear being able to be heightened.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Rank 3 Fear and Rank 3 Fireball are the same rank, so it's a valid swap.

I was under the assumption that Summoner did not learn spells at set ranks akin to flexible casting, but I see now I was wrong.

Bit of a slip-up as I forgot they get that from their level 3 Signature Spells feature

EDIT: oh right... They can just swap spells for any rank starting level 6 aswell. So they can just have 1 spell for their lowest rank and 4 that are only castable with their highest.
