I am feeling like at least one of the two parties I am GMing through this adventure is going to look at the Empty Stone's suggestion that they go to the Dark Lands, and decide that they would rather go find the missing orb.
The Absalom book seems to have all the hooks needed (the owner of the orb is a level 20 character who probably won't believe the adventurers don't mean it harm. She has multiple sets of minions and allies who can make it hard for the party to get to her or to find out where she is keeping the orb, she has an "ally" who is looking for a party of adventurers to get in and look into the orb, she has a dangerous task that could be completed to earn her favor.)
Has anyone written a 3 level adventure to get the reflection from the orb?
I was worried about this derailing and had started thinking through some options. Then I went through a reread of the book and realized the Empty Stones did not even know where it was taken. When we recently played through this, the players took the Stones’ spokesperson at his word and did not question it.
If they had gone to Absalom, I’d planned to make it a difficult search to discover where it had been taken. Once they discovered that it was used to reinvigorate the massive tree in the city, they’d then have a hard decision to either remove that orb and kill the center of the fey’s stronghold in this most important metropolis on Golarion or go find the other orb.
I had only planned on this being a possible side trek and not a full three chapter book (maybe one chapter at most). I was kind of hoping they would derail as I’m really looking forward to getting them to Absalom as that book provides enough adventure ideas to keep even a high level group engaged for some time. That might have to wait until they’re completely done with the AP. I’m glad the ideas for continuing the campaign nodded in that direction.
