Poisons with no cost

Rules Questions

So, I have a player at my table who is making a poisoner character and we were discussing the rules on crafting poison. But we ran into a problem: What about the poisons with no set price like brainrot and black adder venom? How do you set the price to craft them in these cases?

Hero Labs have a cost listed for both of those. brain rot is listed at 800 and black adder venom is listed as 120. There were a couple of poisons in Hero Labs that did not have a cost but those seem to be unique poisons that either cannot be manufactured or require specific components that are probably not available for sale.

For those that require specific components I would simply require the character to actually find the component. For example, if the character wants to make black smear, they have to go to the where the fungus it is distilled from can be found and harvest it themselves. Since that particular poison is used by dark creepers it may require a visit to their territory. Blackfrost poison is produced from the sludge of an arcane machine built by an ancient race. That cannot be made by the character.

Thanks! Do you know how can I access the list of poisons from Hero Labs?

What do you mean “no set price?” Not printed in the book?

As for where to find those two in particular, Archives of Nethys has a complete list of all poisons. (Took me a while to figure out you probably meant brain blot, though I haven’t double-checked Champions of Corruption yet to make sure AoN is correct.)

No, I do mean brain rot (there are poisons in d20pfsrd not listed in Archives of Nethys: https://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/afflictions/poison/).

And yeah, I mean the price is not set, the first poisons of the Archive of Nethys list you just sent don't have prices on them, I wanna know why and how I should I price them if a player wants to craft it.

Search the nethys list further down, a bunch of things (like wyvern and black adder) are listed twice, once w a price and once without. Probably combining entries from multiple sources and not removing duplicates.

The list on AoN looks to be a complete list of all poisons in the game. The list with the cost of NA seems to be those that cannot be manufactured. Blackfrost as I mentioned is a produced by an arcane machine located in a city at the North Pole, Green Prismatic Poison is created by the spell Prismatic Spray or its variants, Wyvern Poison must be harvested from a wyvern. Lethe Water is water from a specific source.

Not all poisons can be manufactured with a craft skill. Some are either naturally occurring substances or produced by specific creatures or objects.

Thanks! That's one of the things I wanted to check, will tell them this

due to legal/business issues d20pfsrd has different stuff and proper names, so it becomes a what's official issue. AoN is the official online PRD.

Advice: Poisons have always been seat-of-the-pants in the pricing for effect. So you'll have to review the pricing curve to keep things stable and effective in your home game. Adding +2 DC Fort will also become a thing. I had to write a rather complicated spreadsheet with lookup values to wrangle it all Champion's style so it made sense for PF1.

OK, did a bunch of digging. According to d20pfsrd, "Brain Rot" is from Adventure Path #37, Souls for Smuggler's Shiv. However, I went through the AP book, and there's no "Brain Rot" in the book.

As near as I can figure, this is actually the Poison Flesh ability of the Ningyo. Statistics match, including the typo of "frequency 1 minutes" (should have a duration).

1) As Azothath said, d20pfrsd can't use Paizo's Intellectual Property (such as the monster name "Ningyo") which makes it really hard to figure out what's what sometimes. Archives of Nethys is generally a better source for this reason.

2) As Mysterious Stranger said, there are poisons that appear in tables that simply can't be crafted. Usually these are poisons naturally secreted by a monster, and occasionally by a spell. It doesn't mean the tables are perfect so if you see a poison you want to use that doesn't appear to have a price you should check the referenced sourcebook and see what the origin is.
