Scribing Scrolls Out of My Spellbook

Rules Discussion

Grand Lodge

I play a wizard and want to invest in the necessary feats/skills/etc. in order to craft scrolls for as-needed purposes (i.e. I want to make a scroll of Jump, a scroll of Invisibility, etc., for spells that I won't always prepare with my slots but would like to have on hand).

All discussion I have seen states that it follows the normal crafting rules, but with the Magical Crafting skill feat as part of it.

Magical crafting states: "you can Craft magic items, though some have other requirements, as listed in GM Core. When you select this feat, you gain formulas for four common magic items of 2nd level or lower."

So, does this mean I only get to craft different 1st-rank spells (since 2nd-rank spells are a 3rd level item as per GM Core) and only four of them? What about the rest of the spells in my book? Do I need to find/acquire a formula in order to scribe scrolls I already know and have written within my spellbook?

Thanks for any advice or help!

You can craft (common items) without a formula - it was changed in the remaster.
Regarding the formula, i have read that you can have one for a certain scroll level, not one for each individual spell.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Some of the details of scroll formulas are left incompletely defined.

The rules for Crafting a Scroll don't really indicate that you need a separate formula for each spell that you want to create a scroll from - just a formula for the scroll itself and you choose the spell to put on the scroll when you craft it. But there may be people who read it differently.

As for which level of scroll item you need a formula for, that is more debated. The GM might want you to get a formula for each Rank of spell separately. Though the Multiple Types formula rules indicate to me at least that you only need one scroll formula and that it will automatically work for higher item level scrolls.

When you create a batch of scrolls, you can choose how many scrolls to create - anywhere from 1 scroll to 4 scrolls. You do have to pay for all of the scrolls created. You don't get a '4 for the price of 1' deal.

Each batch of scrolls has to be creating scrolls of the same spell of the same rank.

You do have to provide a casting of the spell during the creation process. If your character is a spellcaster, then you can create scrolls for the spells that you can cast yourself. If you want to create a scroll for a spell that you don't know or otherwise can't cast, you can usually hire someone else to provide the casting.

If you don't have the formula for a scroll (or a particular scroll level if the GM rules that they are separate) then you can still craft the scrolls, it just takes extra time. Two days of setup instead of only one.

Also note that crafting things quickly - in the minimum amount of time possible (one day per batch with the formula, or two days per batch without the formula) is not any less expensive than just buying the items that you want. You can earn a discount by spending additional days on the crafting. But the base price is going to be the full purchase price.

Yup, "generic" items like the magic scrolls are a single ~formula that you need to use with any spell.

It used to be ruled that each rank of spell scroll was it's own formula, but with the Remaster change so that you can ~heighten item formulas if there are multiple versions of the same item, you only need the single formula for crafting R1 magic scrolls, and that formula works for all magic scrolls.

That will enable to do the crafting as if you have the formula for every spell scroll you make, and get the shorter craft time.

Note some annoyances / details are still in effect, like:

Quote:
The casting must come from a spellcaster expending a spell slot. You can't Craft a scroll from a spell produced from another magic item, for example.

So it can actually be rather non-viable to craft scrolls yourself most of the time, it makes this almost incompatible with adventuring days.

Don't forget that common spells make common scrolls, so you can buy them easily at towns.
