Kineticist - Hurricane Queen question

I have a question as to when you make the 12 consecutive Fly checks when attempting the Hurricane Queen…

Quote:

An aerokineticist must fly around the entire perimeter of the Eye of Abendego without stopping, while succeeding at a series of 12 consecutive DC 40 Fly checks. If successful, she can learn the hurricane queen wild talent. If she fails two or fewer checks, she takes 50d6 points of bludgeoning damage from the hurricane’s galeforce winds. If she fails three or more checks, she must succeed at a DC 25 Reflex save or be pulled into the Eye of Abendego, never to return.

I can see 1 of 3 ways you can interpret this as to at what point you are making these rolls.

1) You enter the Hurricane and before you even get started with flying around it, you make all 12 rolls at once.

2) You take your first move action (Fly 60 feet, or even 120 on a double move), then make your first DC 40 Fly check… Take your second move, then make your Fly check… Do this 12 times in a row (thus taking 12 consecutive rounds or basically 72 seconds)… then assuming you succeeded, continue your long journey around the Hurricane…

3) Make your first DC 40 Fly check, move around perimeter of Hurricane for 30 degrees… Repeat process by takes a Fly check before (or after?) every 30 degrees you move around the Hurricane… 12 checks x 30 degrees = 360 degree circle completed…

Which of these is the correct interpretation of how/when you’d be making those DC 40 Fly checks?

Liberty's Edge

RAW, it is irrelevant. Normally it is something you do "off-screen", not part of an adventure, so you resolve it with a series of checks and the expenditure of the necessary resources.

It changes if the GM wants to make it an adventure, with encounters while flying (but probably that will make it harder to be successful). In that instance I would use 3).

I don't have the book "Occult Realms", so not sure is there any additional info inside, but seems like Hurricane Queen didn't mention the time needed to complete the attunement.

Based on the map given here, the entire perimeter of "Eye of Abendego" is at least 700km, and if you fly at 120 feet per 6 seconds without considering the wind power of Abendego, then you will need at least 31 hours to finish the entire perimeter (If I calculated correctly).

So basically, I think the details is not necessary, it will most likely depends on GM's narrative about how it goes.

Personally I guess the scenario will works like 3 while the PC will actually need to make the Fly check based on 1 (though there will be some preparation before making the check)

I agree it is more likely a narrative off-screen event, like Income checks with Profession or Craft. The character says they're attempting it, the rolls all happen, and at the end the GM narrates the outcome.

Otherwise, if I'm the player and I roll a failure in an interactive scene, I am pulling out (and I never pull out) unless it's like the first failure on the 10th or 11th check and I have like a 90% chance of passing. Because 60–300 damage is a pretty big range. Although, failing 3 or more and just having to make an all-or-nothing save for absolutely zero effect (other than loss of character) could be preferable if you have a really good Reflex save.

Liberty's Edge

If you have a 90% chance of success on every single check, the overall chance of success is less than 23%, Not something on which I would stake my character.
With a 95% chance of making each check the overall chance of success is 55%. That is something I would attempt if I have a way to reroll a failed check or a failed save.

The time needed is relevant, as the chance of success would be modified by fatigue and failure of long-lasting spells.
