I've seen this topic discussed elsewhere, but I haven't seen a consensus... and as the remaster hasn't exactly clarified it... here we go.
1. What happens if your Makeshift staff is destroyed or lost? Can you make a new one?
2. If you craft your staff into a specific magic staff and want to change it later, can you?
In regards to question 2, by raw I think the an answer is yes... but it doesn't feel right.
In short, upgrading it (if it's upgradable) is easy. It's changing the staff thats an issue.
Do you keep the magical staff you originally crafted and make a new one? By a strict reading, the answer seems to be no. You would pay all the costs of the new staff, losing all the resources you originally used to craft the initial staff.
This... feels super limiting unless your character is flush with gold or refrains from taking advantage of this feature until they can craft the staff they really want.
Especially as the only staff most wizards could afford to make early on is a Staff of fire.

1. What happens if your Makeshift staff is destroyed or lost? Can you make a new one?
Theoretically yes. In practice the game doesn't give the cost of it. However, it is not a real problem given the fact that items worn by the character cannot be attacked or damaged by default. Also most GMs probably don't want to create a problem for them trying destroying a makeshift staff.
2. If you craft your staff into a specific magic staff and want to change it later, can you?
Yes. There's no restriction of how many times you can do this. Including technically is possible to have more than 1 makeshift staff but you still follow the general staff rules and your are unable to prepare more than 1 per day. Also other players cannot add extra charges to then beyond the normal because its not their own makeshit staff.
