I am a player in a SoT game. (No spoilers please)
We are trying a cool detailed branch advancement system instead of the RAW single roll, but we are at Branch 1 and Character Level 4 at the end of book 1. We aren't sure if this is normal.
Could anyone who has played/GM'd this let us know what Branch level players should be throughout the game?
Is it just roughly Level should equal Branch?

I'm a player. We're currently level 10.
For most of the AP so far Branch level has lagged a little behind character level depending a bit on rolls. But more often 1 behind with an occasional dip to 2 behind when you get unlucky and with an occassional catching up of branch level to character level on a crit (or even sort of being in advance, ie your branch level is set to advance the instant your character advances).
Certainly, unless you're being quite unlucky, it sounds like your cool system may be advancing you significantly more slowly. Whether that is a feature or a bug ....

Cheers, right now it's a minor issue, but if we get to level 6-7 with branch 2, then we're missing some major skills and abilities that look specifically designed to be used during the campaign.
It's an incredibly nice additional system, but we will need to poke the creator with some play-tested notes :D
