I was initially going to state that the rune wouldn't take place until after the fact because it would be considered TGTBT to allow it otherwise, but it seems the rules would actually permit this.
This is because the Fearsome rune only cares that you make a critical hit, and damage isn't factored in until afterward, at which point the condition will have been inflicted, and then the bonuses from Fearsome Brute will take effect (since the damage roll is now being made on someone who has the Frightened condition).

Oh, good catch.
Yeah, looks legit to me. And considering the names of the item and feat, I'm gonna assume the writers actually meant for that to work.
(Note that Fearsome Brute also works with Intimidating Strike, and both are CRB fighter feats. Clearly this kinda damage scaling wasn't considered outrageous.)
I wonder about that, Intimidating Strike is what first popped into my head as an example of something that wouldn't work with Brute on the same attack.
Intimidating Strike reads "Make a melee Strike. If you hit and deal damage, the target is frightened 1, or frightened 2 on a critical hit." It seems to me that it only inflicts frightened after both the attack and damage are resolved, unless we did some weird stuff in the damage calculation step and went back to apppy frightened before the damage.I don't think it's that big of a loss, though, since by the time you get Fearsome Brute you're only two levels away from a greater fearsome rune.
