21 July 2023 - GM Announcement
Good afternoon friends!
We’re a little late this year, but registration for SkalCon 2023 is open! We have about 95% of the schedule ready and open for GM Registration and Signup! As a bonus, after you’ve signed up to GM, you can start picking your Player tables as well!
Registration is $25, along with the option to buy a t-shirt. We’ve also updated our Covid-19 policy this year, which you can review when registering. You can also pre-purchase a t-shirt when registering (the design is still in the works, but we’ll be at it).
Table sign-ups will expand on August 4th to include regular player signups, and guest table signups for GMs. Full table sign-ups will open on August 18th!
Don’t forget the hotel block is still open! Follow the instructions on our website to book your hotel room for the convention!
Looking forward to playing games with you all this year.

I want to thank everyone who came to our little convention. It was very joyous to see old friends and to meet new ones. Thank you all.
The whole weekend was bittersweet. From Thursday night’s get together through Saturday’s memorial for Jack Brown there was an inescapable pall hanging overhead. There were a lot of tears, laughter, and “Do you remember when…” It made me realize that through pain and loss that catharsis can happen with loved ones. I am still mad at my friend for dying before me. I am still sad that my friend is gone. Yet, the many people that rose to give their affirmation on how Jack impacted their lives brought some solace to those in the room. People spoke for over an hour regaling us with stories about how much Jack meant to them. My life is better and richer for having Jack being a part of it.
There are few people in this world whose impact is felt beyond their home. I am happy that I could call one of those people my friend. I will miss you until I myself heed the call of the longships and return home to my ancestors. And even then, I expect him to welcome me to the hearth with a flagon of ale and a leg of smoked meat.
I will love you forever.

Things I heard at SkalCon that maybe AlexS or Thursty (or somebody totally different) said, probably:
The bar doesn't take Canadian money.
We're going back to Numeria.
I wonder what big event we have going on in July?
I could only include one location in each neighborhood of Magnimar
I like to hear what people who run our game have to say.
If you just want to be good at killing things in melee we've got the fighter for that.
I'm so excited to play with Pirate Rob (This definitely wasn't AlexS or Thursty)

SkalCon was always my time to see my Minnesota family. Jack and I would bond over food, games, and beer. We made a pilgrimage to the Nordicware shop to see what new cooking gadgets we could try out.
This year, the family came together to mourn Jack. There were tears, and laughter, and all the feels. In the end, it was the catharsis I needed to pick up and move on.
Thank you to the organizers, for their efforts to pull a convention together while grieving themselves. Thank you to the GMs, who prepped our games, and in some cases, their own maps. Thank you to the vendors that came out to remind us that beauty remains in the world. Thank you to the players, for being a family and supporting to each other.
Jack, I will see you once more in Valhalla. Everyone else, SkalCon X is only 360 away.
